It sure seems like this winter is a little more like the winters I used to remember with lots of snow and days of below zero at a time.
It can suck for anyone having to work or be outside alot. You can dress for it though.
It always seems to be hard on cars and furnaces too. Nothing worse than the car not starting and having to get to work.
Otherwise I love a good winter with lots of nice white snow. It is somehow very peaceful.
I don't mind the cold and the snow so much. I have a well insulated house, a plowing service to take care of the driveway, and a boss who understands that skirts are highly impractical in this weather. What really irritates me during this kind of weather is the sudden loss of brain cells in some of the drivers during rush hour.
Has anyone perfected the teleporter yet?
Growing up in Fargo, ND (shut up..) I can remember brutal cold weather and being buried in snow right up to my butt, and still having to walk to school.. Yes up hill both ways.. ;) With your scarf frozen to your face... Ah the memories..
This winter has for sure seemed colder than the last few we've had... Wasn't it just a few years ago that we didn't get any noticeable snow until January?
I hate hate hate the snow and cold, and as I get older I just hate it more..
No likey to ski, no likey to snowboard, no likey no likey no likey... :P
Where is this Global Warming I was promised?
I have lived in Lauderdale my whole life. I remember the days of my youth when I trick-or-treated in the snow. There were 4 such times, the last being 1991 when I was a senior in HS. My family owned much of the Breezy Point Resort and there were snowmobiles as far as the eye could see, until 1995. Then the snow stayed away. It seems to have finally come back this year. But that's ~15 years of low snow. Deer hunting in shorts is just wrong. 2 years ago we got our first dusting of snow on X-mas eve.
I do not use a 'winter' jacket. I only use a thin wind breaker (even in today's 10+ below zero.) I only wore a winter jacket when I was on foot patrol around the exterior of MAC facilities in the winters after 9/11.

Not quite as far north, of course, but here in Chicago it's been rough, particularly if you have any major commuting. This morning it took me 2 1/2 hours to get from home to the office. Under normal condition this is a 1 hour drive. I know of others who have been spending the night at nearby hotels rather than attempting to get home through the icy streets.
I'm ready for spring!
We were up north (near Pine River) this past weekend and the kids were envious of the amount of snow there vs the snow we have in the cities. We all enjoy out
I spent the late 70's in upstate New York (outside of Rochester) and while it was much warmer there we also received a lot of "lake effect" snow.
I admit that the cold gets to me after a while, but I do love new snow!
It truly isn't cold until your nostrils stick together when you sniff.
I am soooo so glad I moved when I did, I do feel sorry for those that hate it and have to deal with it though. My father in law and I do kind of snicker when we see the weather reports from up there though.
I remember in 1991 we had a blizzard on Halloween that dumped 3 + feet on us, I couldn't even find my car until I realized I was standing on it. :o I don't mind the snow, I hate the cold that comes after the snow fall.

I would also like to know where it is. :P
Good times . . .
I remember when I was but a lad in the wilds of South Dakota, the wind sweeping across the plains, where every snowstorm was a blizzard. 1974, I recall a particularly nasty storm, lasted 4 days. My dad and the hand, shoveled their way out to the cars and barns and animals, through the drifts. I went out to play and was able to climb up said drift and look down on my dad's head. 6-7 ft drift, right in the middle of our front yard, nothing but snow dunes as far as the 4 yr old eye could see.
Thank god I live in a city now where that really can't happen . . . still pretty brisk waiting for the school bus this morning.
I think the winter I remember best was one where there was so much snow that the neighbor guy was trying to dig out his car and he was waist deep in snow. School was closed for well over a week, there was so much ice that the trees were falling over, i think we lost electricity at one point, and from then I vividly remember being perched in a chair right by the window with a blanket and potato soup and I literally spent hours watching people trying to dig out of the snow. When they finally got the roads cleared...it was piled up so high on the medians and such that you couldn't see the cars on the other side...it was like driving by walls of snow.
Today...I learned that running tights make amazing long underwear and that a winter coat isn't good enough unless topped off with a wool cloak. Yea...it's friggin cold. Will it ever warm up?

Yep, I remember those storms too. It couldn't just snow, oh no. Had to be 50mph winds too. If I can find it, I have a picture somewhere of me as a kid sledding off my house's roof. The snow drifts were going OVER the house. You could walk right up the drift on one side and step onto the roof of most of the single story and some two story houses in town.
Here's a picture from one of the last big snow falls here in MN. That's my snow shovel, up to the top of the handle. I had to dig it out to get to it.

Muffin, I too am from Fargo but also moved farther North past Grand Forks where it was -20 in January all the time. Blizzards all the time and lots of being out of school. I also remember having to walk to school in Elementary as there was no busing (sp) for city kids. It was like a mile to school. On really really cold days my mom may have given me a ride to school if she could get out of work. What I really hated was in High School all the farm kids came in the diesel trucks and kept them running from after lunch until after school was out and the rest of us were jumping cars and freezing as they just drove off in a warm truck...damn them!!
Even though it is cold enough out to cut glass with my nipples, I still wear my nylon wind breaker. My boss looks at me like I'm nuts.

Buses to school? Ha! We didn't have no stinkin buses!! Yep I for the most part walked everyday, unless it was really really really cold (and yes that means colder than it is today!!) I might get lucky and catch a ride with the neighborhood stay at home Mom...
Remind me why we all stay living in the frozen land of MN again? ::)
A can of 'starting fluid' from any hardware or auto parts store goes a long way. Just pop the hood and spray a bit of it on the 'under' side of the air cleaner, where the air is drawn in.
That'll give just enough combustible to get the first couple revs in before the computer wakes up.
I do this all the time with sleds, ATVs, cars, and a lawnmower.
Between the cold and the icy roads it was an interesting drive to the park and ride this morning! Started off by getting hung up in the driveway (the driveway slopes down and is just steep enough to cause problems)...it likely is because I get to drive the conversion van (it scares the teen) and ended up sliding into a parking spot.

Does anyone remember the blizzard of 1978, that crippled everything in it's path for days ! I vaguely remember that one, cause i did not have to go to school for days ! :)
And how about the big ice storm in 1998 that hit the east coast. Areas around here were without power for three weeks !
What is all this i hear about global warming ! It is minus 25 here today where I live in New York ! Now that is cold !
I lived in Fall River Mass when the blizzard of 78 hit. It was that snow storm that made me hate snow from then on. My parents felt that you should never let the snow get higher than 3 inches, so I had to go out and shovel the walk ways. Not only that, but back in those days they parked in the street, so it was my job to shovel the cars out as well. Not an easy thing to do when the snow plows kept coming along and burying them back in. After about the third time I was forced outside in the dang thing to do my chore, I threw my shovel at the plow when it passed and went back inside. I told my mom she could beat me till her arm got too sore move, but I wasn't going back out till the snow had stopped. I think we ended up getting around 4 feet of snow fall out of it. I do remember schools were closed for weeks. It was the one silver lining out of the whole deal.

Two winters really stick out to me.
I can't remember what year the 1st one was. It was in the mid to late 70's and I was maybe 10 years old or so. My grandparents were farmers and I remember one winter the drifts being as high as the roofs on some of the out buildings. Me and and a friend of mine spent a day climbing up the roofs then sliding down them into the snowbanks. It was such fun. Neither of us had ever seen snow so deep or drifts so high. My grandpa had to plow a path down the road with a tractor with a scoop shovel on it, just so the car get to the farm. The banks on either side of the road were higher then the roof of the car. That was winter in southwestern MN. Lots of flat land and the winds just whipped the snow into a frenzy.
The other was the winter of '91. More specifically the Halloween Blizzard. 38 inches of snow in less then 1 day. I was on college then. The storm hit on a Thursday night. Me and my room mates woke up late Friday morning (we closed the bars down Halloween night) to a mountain of snow. We lived within walking distance of a bar and a liquor store (which both managed to stay open the whole time...imagine that, and they did quite the business from us snowed in students that weekend)...need I say more!?...It ended up being weekend of snowed in drunkenness and partying with all the other students around who were snowed in too. It was a great time!.
All in all, I love the snow, but the bitter cold is getting harder to handle the older I get. Temps in the teens I don't mind. But the negative 20 crap, I can do without...

Is that the temp? or windchill?
It's so cold, they canceled school today!
I remember when we moved from Hallock (you know like 10 miles from the border) to Hoffman ( near Alex) all the kids were like did you have lots of snow up North. Nope. It was to dang cold up there. In the 4 year I lived in Hallock it seamed we never got more than a foot the whole winter because it was too cold to snow or something. I was pretty young and don't really remember much from back then. I do remember them lecturing us each year on what to do if saw a bear on the way to or from school. That still cracks me up. I wanted to see a bear so bad and never saw one.
It's been colder than I remember for several days now, no problem, long sleeved shirt, full-length skirt with flannel petticoat underneath, my trusty Windwalker boots from Bristol RenFaire, topped off by a full-length Texas Body Hanging wool cape with hood. Except for my face, warm as toast. The people at work were curious, until I had them put their hand under my cape.
A wool lined cloak is warmer than a polyester down-filled parka, and it's much more practical when your main concern is keeping your 4.5 pound wee doggie warm. Nixie wears her sweater and jacket, then wrapped in several layers of polarfleece and under my cape she goes. You can't do that with a coat.

That's including windchill.

They did that in some towns just east of here but no such luck locally. My students have been inside for 2 solid weeks - they've gone bonkers (and driven me there too - there ain't enough wine in Australia to fix this).

Good one GP.
Maybe the Dregs could add that to their playlist too!!
Speakin off MN winter spent all night at work listening to the rain (in FEBRUARY!!) It was sposda freeze but hasn't really and road crews have been salting so it's not slippery therefore I'm glad it was rain and not snow! (tried to not make that a run-on but oh well!)
Happy to hear that the icy stuff didn't really appear (the news made it sound like Duluth and the surrounding area was shutting down yesterday).
We have a nice big puddle in the garage (there is a drain, but it is frozen still.....) and a little wooden bridge over the puddle leading out to the hot tub. Rain in February is weird.
You guys are getting rain and down here in my part of AZ we just got the worst snow storm they've claimed they have ever had. It had parts of I40 closed for quite some time. Heck it's been almost two days ago and still have snow on the ground. Most is melted, but the temps haven't climbed back up to normal yet so the snow seems to be sticking around a little. Odd wouldn't you say? I moved here to get away from snow and they've had two of the worst snow storms ever since I got here. Now what's with this global warming thing again?
I think you just brought the snow with you, Fig... ;D
Looks like the warm weather is over...brrrrrr. Back to the extra layers again.
Sure was a short summer...
