My sister Rebecca(Bekki) is devastated. Her 16 year companion, a massive Quarter horse named Zeus, broke his leg really badly yesterday. She had to have him put down. Burial is this afternoon. He meant the world to her, and traveled a lot of the world with her. Houston, Alaska, Montana, Arkansas, then back here to Houston/Katy.
She adopted him when he was around three from a stable she worked at. He was extremely head shy then, as if he'd been severely abused. But, she was able to bring him out of that with a lot of work and TLC, and he spent 16 wonderful years with her.
Please light a candle for her in this time of mourning.
My thoughts are with your sister - may she find the peace she deserves and the strength to make it through.
It is hard to lose a best friend regardless if it is 2 legged or 4. I will keep her in my prayers.
:'( I know exactly how she feels. Almost five years ago I had to have my Arabian gelding put down. We had been partners for 22.5 years. Outside of my son he was my life. I did everything to make his life wonderful and as a result those were the some of the best times of my life. Your sister is in my thoughts and prayers.
This poem helped me get through the hard times.
Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor.
Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams
of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss
someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance.
His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying
over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous
reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the
beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but
never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

MacLaren your sister is in my thoughts and prayers during this time of sorrow.
A terrible loss. I am truly sorry.
Ferret
That is so terribly sad! I lost my horse from my childhood when I was 19. Due to circumstances beyond my control, I had to give her up, to someone I didn't trust no less, which was hard enough. Then, a few months later I found out that the idiot jerk I sold her to caused her to founder so badly she had to be put down. Even though she technically wasn't mine anymore, I was heartbroken. I'm so sorry for your sister's loss, and will say a prayer for her.
Many thanks to you all. Just got back from the burial. So sad to see him go like that. But, such is the nature of things. We all go eventually. Celtic Lady, Bekki really appreciated your poem. It helped immensely and she sends thanks to you and all.
MacLaren, how is Bekki doing? I know only time can heal the empty hole that was left in her life and heart. Has she started to heal from the loss? She's still in my thoughts/prayers.
