I'm playing a new faire on May 2nd. It's The Medieval & Renaissance Faire at The Ohio State University in Downtown Columbus, Oh.
The web site is http://cmrf.org.ohio-state.edu/ (http://cmrf.org.ohio-state.edu/). The faire is only one day but it's a good day trip from the Pittsburgh area. This faire has been around for 35 years but since it is only one day, many do not know about it. It is a lovely setting next to a lake in a park right in the middle of the OSU campus.
If your looking for a chance to try out that new garb before the other faires start, this would be the place.

I've heard of this one but never made it there. With the absence of the Fairy Festival, this one just might make it on my itinerary.

Hmmm...Google Maps estimates 3:45 drive time for me. That sounds like an overnight stay. Time to look for a campground!

M, I sent a note to the person I have been dealing with and told her that we may be having some rennies coming from Pittsburgh and campground information would be appreciated. She was kind enough to send the following:
"The more the merrier! The two places I've been to are Hocking Hills http://www.stateparks.com/hocking_hills.html (http://www.stateparks.com/hocking_hills.html) and Alum Creek http://www.stateparks.com/alum_creek.html (http://www.stateparks.com/alum_creek.html), both of which are a bit of a drive from Columbus but quite lovely. If you click on the "Ohio" link it will show you all of the parks in Ohio, but I have not been to any of the other ones. I hope you all find a nice campground!

The first place is 45.5 mi – about 1 hour 10 mins south of the Faire site.
The second is 21.4 mi – about 32 mins north of the Faire site. Both look nice.
Let me point out that also in the Hocking Hills area is a place called Ravenwood Castle. A bit pricey, but can you imagine a whole group of rennies in a place like that? ;D

Man, I'm in love with this place. I think we are going to book it for our anniversary. It's 4 hours from Pittsburgh and a little over an hour from the OSU Campus. Accomodations range from $50 for the Gypsy trailer to $210 for the best suite in the castle. It's a beautiful place.
I've heard of Ravenwood Castle, but I was unaware of the medieval village and gypsy trailers. The trailers are $115 for Friday-Saturday together, and can easily hold 2 people (more with some effort). Sounds like a possibility!
Ravenwood is a favorite vacation spot for my family! We have stayed in the gypsy wagons as well as the Fairy Tale cottages and also the castle proper...all very good experiences! The castle staff are wonderful and accommodating, and it is quite a unique experience. The food is always delicious as well, though the kids are usually less enthusiastic about that as I am. Still, they love eating in the dining hall with all the other castle guests every morning for breakfast.
Terry, thanks for posting this faire...every year I think about going, but I've yet to make it. If there is to be an invasion, it must be fate that I'm meant to go this year! As fortune would have it, there is nothing on my calendar for May 2. HUZZAH!

Just wanted to point out that the rooms/cottages at Ravenwood are filling up very quickly. If anyone is hoping to stay there, I'd suggest making a reservation right away. (Ravenwood's Cancellation Policy = cancel up to 1 week before for a full refund; any cancellations less than a week prior to intended stay will receive a credit voucher for a future visit.)
And if anyone else is staying there, do post so we know whose smiling faces will be joining us at breakfast! ;D
*Note...there are a few cottages that have beds and daybeds/sofa beds, for those looking to save money by sharing accomodations.

We're cast members at the Bay Area Renaissance Festival (Tampa), but frequently visit what the Columbus/OSU crowd affectionately nicknamed U-Ren. Both of our daughters attended OSU and were members of the Medieval/Renaissance guild. Our eldest, Meghan (aka Arwin Adria) is also founding and artistic director of Minstrelry, a performance troupe that will be at the faire for their 3rd straight year.
We'll be there on May 2nd.....how will we identify and greet you?

Nay, fair lady, I have not been there before. The fiare comes highly recommended by people who have been to several other faires and are qualified to compare. The only other information is the limited amount on their web page.
Maybe GypsyWriter can shed some light as she has been ther before.

In my humble opinion (and past experience), I would characterize the vendor assortment as moderate/modest. Assorted purveyors of garb (nothing terribly elaborate or expensive), jewelry, crafts, and arms. In the past at least one arms vendor has offered everything from "hang it on the wall and forget it" to fully stage combat capable items. Purchased a Paul Chen main gauche there 3 years ago, and have seen several quality broadswords and rapiers in the past at reasonable prices.
Nicely run, nicely laid out Faire run by the Medieval and Renaissance Guild of The Ohio State University.

AH yes! Spring with a May Day celebration should perk up my spirits! Columbus has wonderful shopping and mundane entertainment, so why not make the excursion and look around while you're there? I am hopeful to journey out...would be grand to see so many of you at U-Ren! and seeing that I haven't seen Ambios and Maude since I left the circuit to be with my fairytale love, which is even longer than I haven't seen most of you... I am thinking we need a tailgate gathering! As long as my health cooperates... I hope to see you there!
YAY!!! And i live in columbus now so i expect to see EVERYONE!!!! hopefully i'll have a new costume by then and some armor done as well.... !!!!!!! I'm so excited. Even though i am not going to stay at ravenwood. (which looks amazing btw)

Well, friends, it looks like there won't be an opportunity to tailgate at U-Ren. Columbus has a no open container law and the only parking facilities are on the street or a large indoor parking garage which is right next to the site.
We will have to be content to do our drinking after the faire. I'm told by Ambios that there are some good pubs in the area where rennies are welcome so we'll coordinate plans when we get there.
I thought I had best let you all know now before you get there and are disappointed but I hope everyone still wants to go.

The groups idea to stay at Ravenwood castle is a great idea. Me ,Shannon and Heather (Hooka) had been going there for years for their Medieval Festival to vend.Alas they had to stop the medieval festival because the owner was terminally and the Queen (his wife) who is an absolute doll couldn't handle taking care of him and doing the fair at the same time. We planned to camp almost every time but A room would open up and we would all stay in one room. If you stay in the gypsy wagons beware that the showers do NOT have a toilet in them .there are port a privys instead.There are quite a few BIG rooms where one can put up an air bed so you can stuff more people in them.the one room has a bed which can sleep 4 comfortably no kidding. The staff is absolutely FANTASTIC there and never minded when we did that.The chef is world class (at least the 5 years we went) They have a dinner where one is welcome to put on your finest garb and attend a feast in their Hall for an additional $25 a person. If you can stay DO IT! There are no phone outlets or wireless for electronics and only one phone in the great hall. Cell phone reception is horrendous but is a beautiful place to relax and really immerse yourself in the era. Shannon and I will try to attend but we just vended at the Viking fest this past weekend and are going to support and play at the charity to save the Santa Maria (pirate) ship that is moored in Columbus the following weekend.( the ship lost her funding and we are trying to save her). I will expand on THAT in another topic thread!

'Tis a quandry, dear Lady. My pick would be Byrnes Pub, http://www.byrnespub.com/ (http://www.byrnespub.com/) One of the performers from the faire is playing the evening there and it looks like a great place. Byrnes Pub is a couple of miles away but we will be in need of a good meal, not to mention a terrible thurst. There are directions on the web site and a link to Mapquest so you can see how far it is.
Nothing is within walking distance unless you are Steven Write who said, "Everywhere is within walking distance if you have the time".
It has been recommended by several people now as being rennie friendly. When we all get together and coordinate with the regulars from that area, we can definately plan on where to go.
If I know this group, there will be a party somewhere. Just the logistics of getting everyone to the same place.

Ambios, it was our pleasure. We enjoyed the day and especialy making new friends like you and Lady Maud. I love everything about faire except the nagging feeling on the way home that I didn't spend enough time with people. It always happens at every faire so I know it's just a feeling. Perhaps that's why we keep going back.
Please tell your daughter that we enjoyed the improv as well. It's something we enjoy doing and can appreciate it when it's done well.
Please stay in touch and I hope to see you agian.
BTW, Byrnes Pub was a disapointment. The only food was pizza and subs and we were ready for a MEAL. A friend who lives in Columbus took us all to a great place called "Bucket O' Nails" where we had a great dinner outside on the patio. I saw someone setting up for entertainment at Byrnes but I'm sure they didn't start until later and we had a long drive.

Understood...that's always the worst part about a faire ending...."we didn't get to spend enough time with..." ...regardless of whether we're visiting OR have been doing cast for 7 weeks plus rehearsal time.

One last faire for the Irish Troubadour. This was a great road trip last year for the rennies. The Ohio State University Renaissance and Medieval Faire on May 1st in Columbus, Oh. Find all the information at http://cmrf.org.ohio-state.edu/
The faire starts at 11:00 on Saturday. Its right on the OSU campus in the middle of Columbus. We had a great time last year. Dinner after at the Ole Bag Of Nails.
Guess we're going to have to miss it this year. We will be at the Georgia Ren Faire that weekend. Hope everyone has a great time.
Several of us will be heading up to OSU and are excited to be able to see Terry perform there.

Recovered enough to finally post. What a fun day! So great to see so many people making the trip. Terry really enjoyed the attentive audience, playing for the President of OSU ( who really seemed to be enjoying the music) and he really appreciated the tips, didn't even ask me for his change back! That whole scene was hysterical.
And loved dinner. The Old Bag of Nails is a great, attentive place, even though we kept calling and changing the number of reservations and they still squeezed more in at the last minute. Just to sit and hang with everyone afterwards was so relaxing and so much fun.
And I have to say Aidan is the best little baby I have ever seen. Such a cute, pleasant little fellow with so many Aunties.
Every year it gets to be more and more fun. Hope to see everyone at the Harp on one of Terry's dates this month. I will be celebrating on the 15th. I managed to get through another year!
