Title: Snow!
Post by: Zoë on March 26, 2009, 02:24:44 PM
To everyone who's getting major snow right now (which is like everyone in the state!), be careful on the roads if you have to be on them!  Stay warm and dream of warmer climes!

We have about 8-9 inches here in Greeley, the snow is coming in sideways at the moment.  UNC shut down at 12:30, and I am hoping it will remain closed tomorrow too.  I will post some pics of our dumpage here when I am feeling brave enough to stick my head out the door!

Be careful out there!  I'll be at work until everything is done, but we're aiming to finish as soon as possible.

And if you want to share photos or stories - at least in the Springs - go to www.gazette.com (http://www.gazette.com). The newspaper is collecting tales.

I'm just glad Toki and I both called in. At 5:30 am in Loveland we already had over an inch. It didn't look bad but being a Native I know this state all to well with it's Spring Dumps. So I called up my team and my work and said DO NOT GO IN. To top it off I was to drive to Boulder then Broomfield and be there all day. OYE made the right call as Interstate 36 from Boulder to Westminster was closed.

My boss wasn't to happy but hey, I'm tired of being to dedicated to a job that doesn''t respect me and have loyalty to me killing myself.

Stay warm!

One Great thing about snow days is that Lady Delaney and I get to spend some quality time together. We snuggle on the couch and watch the shows that we have tevoed all through the week. Also hot soup for lunch is really great. I am soooo glad that I didn't have to fight that commute to work this morning! Everyone else....stay safe, please , so that we can meet again at faire.

Wow ... that's a lot of snow ... we have so much wind we have big drifts in Colorado Springs and ice, with packed snow on the roads, but I'm not sure what the actually inch count is.

I'm rather glad that I was able to leave work early!

I plan on taking photos tomorrow morning, especially if Pikes Peak peeks through the clouds early on.

Still snowing, still blowing, and it will be sunset soon ... why can I hear birds outside my window?!

It is still coming down here, though mostly it's just blowing around.  Not nearly as bad as it was this morning.  I don't know what our official inch total is here but I would wager it's probably over a foot, not counting the drifts.  I am crossing my fingers for a university closure tomorrow, but no promises...

Last I checked, we only had about 9 inches of snow. When I shoveled this afternoon, it was only about six inches.

I'm really glad I shoveled. It won't be so bad when I have to do it again tomorrow.

Also, I finished a sleeve for my new outfit. A whole sleeve! and then.....my needle broke. D'oh!

I wouldn't worry too much.  It's supposed to move out by tomorrow morning and then there's another small storm coming in on Monday, supposedly.  We'll see.

Gotta love Colorado Spring snow storms. They hammer us hard for a day or two then melt away filling our streams with water.

OH that bits.

I'm just glad I stayed home instead of making that commute to Boulder then down 36 to Broomfield. As it was the place I work at sent an email out for people to gom home as easly as they could. And today many people still are out. Both of my helpers didn't get in until 11 am and both where suppose to be in at 7:30. I made it to work at 7:30 with no issues, but being a native to the state I know when to go slow and be safe.

My mom had to drive home down US 36 out of Boulder yesterday at around noon; a 30-minute drive took her 2 1/2 hours.  People just freak out when the conditions are bad...just take it slow and calm down and you'll be fine!  (Most of the time...)

My BF (of almost 40 years) lives in Greeley - that's a hell of a snowfall.  And I went to high school in Colorado Springs - we could see Pikes Peak through the dining room window.  I miss Colorado (but not the snow), but the entire fam damily lives in the Houston area now.

She was on it before it closed, as far as I know.  It just took her a damn long time to get off of it.

Nope, no cows here...we usually smell 'em but don't see 'em!

Snow is great except when it snows... it would have been nice if the snow had not happened all at once like a broken pinata.

Taffy- we had a hundred feet of snow this weekend everywhere except in Colorado Springs where the temps were in the low 90's. Palmer High school had a BBQ.

Zoe- invisible cows eh? Well, I was also surprised to see the picture of buildings and cars!

I miss Colorado's snow so much right now...

It was 92 degrees saturday out at Faire here in Tampa, with our usual 100% humidity.  I've happily been wearing my new black and red gown the past three weekends, but this was the first day I found myself reconsidering my choice of gown and thinking of changing back to my yellow.

One more weekend, I'll be back in Colorado by the 12th.  Save some snow for me....

I don't know what the technical classification of a blizzard is, but I think they were calling it one because it snowed more than 3 inches in an hour, or something like that?  Haha who knows.  It was a freaking lot of snow all at once, that's the extent of my knowledge.

Of course, it rained here overnight and now all the snow is gone...boo.

I'm ready for 92 and shorts!

We put some snow in the fridge next to the blizzard, from DQ. Unfortunately, auto defrost can't tell the difference.

p.s. The technical classification of a blizzard: stick a spoon in it and see if it stays in when held upside down.

That along with the fact that there were major wind justs up to 45mph during the snow storm. Withthe snow falling, the snow on the ground and the wind I could NOT see the house less that 25 yards across from me

Yup it was a blizzard by most standards except those from North Dakota :)

being a "blizzard" has more to do with wind then amount of snow. defined, I believe, by visibility distance.

I've seen 6 inches of snow with 60mph wind gusts drift to 8-10 feet and close the whole city.

From the Wiki

The major consensus is that in order to be classified as a blizzard, as opposed to merely a winter storm, the weather must meet several conditions: the storm must decrease visibility to a quarter of a mile or 400 meters, include snow or ice as precipitation, and have wind speeds of at least 35 miles per hour or 56 kilometres per hour (which would be seven or more on the Beaufort Wind Scale) for at least three consecutive hours.

YUP it was a snow storm where I live as visibility was about 25 feet and the wind was glowing about 45MPH and it did it from 9am to about 3

It's been raining for three days in Loveland. Well we did get just a little amount but mainly rain. Boulder were I work had snow south of Arapahoe Street and rain mixed with snow to Jay Road then rain all the way to Loveland, Yet a friend in Bellevue (West of Ft Collins Laporte) at 16" at 6pm last night and he left out place at 1am. Dear Colorado,

I just got back from three wonderful months in Florida and would like to see some serious snow.  The 1" we got in South Colorado Springs last weekend was embarassing.

Please give me a proper snowstorm.  I missed ski season, and I need my snow.  The white blanket on Pikes Peak is annoying me as it's as warm here as back home.

As for skiing, it's not over yet ...
Aspen Highlands: open through this weekend (April 25-26).
Echo Mountain: open weekends through May 3.
Loveland: closes May 3.
Arapahoe Basin: no announced closing date.

YES But consider this... If it's winter, that means it's further away to faire season as Spring means it's getting closer to faire. SO for those of us who want Faire come winter is bad. ALSO In Colorado we can get snow in the middle of July. and even rain during faire. Have you been to CoRF when it's raining and cold out? NO FUN as you freeze your tush off and no one wants to be there and it gets very muddy. Sliding down the mountain also NOT FUN!

If you want snow go up to Trail Ridge in the middle of July

BOO HISSS to winter
:)

i actually enjoy both quite a lot actually. i hate summer and its heat with a passion, but also enjoy watching baseball and going to faire. but september through december is my prime, what can i say. i get to go to all of my favorite faires for 2-3 months, and then i get snow and cold. the best of both worlds all in 120 days, gotta love it.

It is important we all enjoy the same weather, otherwise some us will like this while others like that.

Om... mother nature... om...

Woke up this morning (5:30) and glanced through the blinds. I thought it was very foggy outside... NOT it was SNOW :( And it's snowing pretty good in Boulder (7:25) right now where I work.

Ok here it is the last week of April and we still have Snow falling. We are 6 weeks away from faire and in that time the weather can go from cold and snowy to high 90's back to low 40's with rain and snow.

OH well it means a greener May and June.

Definitly getting snow here in Westminster, or Denver, or Northglenn, whatever city you want to call my location.  Have about 4-6 inches on the cars and the grass/trees.

Not too bad really, though it will freak out drivers again.

At least it isn't sticking to the roads, that would make my day miserable.

That's what we get for living in the "Banana Belt" of Colorado, Yup that's what we call it. When the rest of Colorado has bad weather, it's nicer up north. When it snow's we get rain. and such.

Except that when it rains down there we get tornadoes....or close to us, anyway.  I am teaching next fall at the school that was almost destroyed by the tornado that touched down last summer.  Yay!

Ah but that was a freak tornado... but then again tornados do like to form on the east side of I-25. See them zoom over my apartment and then touch, bounce and go back up into the sky.

Weld County has one of the highest concentraions of tornado's in the US. They just USUALLY don't do any damage. and a F3 in Colorado is rare especially that time of year. Out in eastern Colorado where I was born and spent many summers I hit the root celler at least twice in two months. An F5 hit there a few years back but did little damage as there is only farm land. Destroyed 1 farm, and damaged a couple others. And killed one Semi truck... minus the driver as he was in his storm celler

The tornado that hit Cheyenne 20+ years ago was another freak storm and the one that hit north Longmont also 20+ years ago was a freak. The one that hit Limon 25+ years ago NOT so freak.

Major damaging tornado's in Colorado like the one that hit Windsor and east Greeley last year?  They happen just rare.

I prefer earthquakes over tornadoes ... and that's an informed statement, truly!

Be safe all ...
