Title: Kansas City Renaissance Festival In the Snow??
Post by: kcdcchef on March 27, 2009, 03:38:29 PM
since the kansas city area is about to get a big late season snowfall, and everyone is freaking out about snow the last weekend of march, it got me to thinking................

does anyone have pictures of the shire in the snow? i have never seen any. i think it would be really neat. the quietness of the faire, the snow covering the empty lanes. i just think it would look so neat. i am a big baseball fan, and some of the neatest shots of kauffman stadium i have ever seen were of the k in winter, with snow covering the entire seating bowl. just looked soooo neat.

okay, i am done rambling now!!

While I've not seen the empty site covered in snow; I've worked the festival when it was has sleeted and snowed (all in the same day) and yes, it is beautiful to watch the sleet/snow coming down but ... not so much to work in when you dressed for a warm fall day!  Alas, being as I was working the festival, I do not have photos from that year.  That would have been .... 2001 or 2002 season, I believe.

i think i was there that day!!!

carrie shoptaw was gonna get me some pictures to post, but it was around the time jim gasser passed away, so i never pushed the issue. perhaps next winter i will pester her to get me some to post. something just tells me it is quite the sight to behold to see all the beautiful lanes as quiet as can be, and covered in pretty white snow.

We've been season passholders since 2001, and it's never been anywhere near cold enough to snow when we've been there!  I remember one early morning in the upper 30s, but it was bright and sunny and warmed up to the 50s by midday.  And then there was that horrible Labor Day where it poured... 2004 or so... you might have caught hypothermia (it was miserable, and they closed the gates for weather for the only time in 30 years), but still not snow weather.

Temps in the 90s through the last weekend are a lot more likely.  Remember, our fair is Labor Day through Columbus Day, and it's very common for us to still be in shorts at Hallowe'en.

us?? i grew up in kansas city and have been going to this faire for 30 years now. you should read the whole post, i was talking in late march about off season photos of the shire covered in snow. if you have ever been to canterbury when it is closed, it looks pretty similar to when it is open.

there was one year where it was in the 30's on closing weekend, like october 19th, that was 96 i believe. that was the year we had the godawful snowstorm in october that dumped 10 inches on kansas city. and the closing sunday it was a high of 35, brrrr. last year, jackie and i ( my wife ) were at the pub sing on closing monday ( columbus day last year ) and the freezing rain was falling at 6pm, they closed the faire early on closing day it was so cold, rainy, and miserable. when we got in our rental car and turned it on, it was 38. brrrr!!

anyways, TKM, my favorite 19 year old, or anyone else, if you are ever near bonner springs when it is freezing cold, snap a few shots, i would be grateful. carrie was supposed to get me some but it was around the same time jim passed away, rest his soul.

So, speaking of KCRF in the snow, how was the Faire today?  Chilly?  My buddy from Omaha sent me a photo from there, it seems that THEY got around 6"!  None of it stuck on the streets.

hot chocolate - cappucino stands could not keep up. long lines serving basically lukewarm stuff, ick!!

I was out there yesterday and it was brisk to say the least.  Lesson learned and I am already working on cold weather garb.  Layers and wool are my mantra.

We were there Saturday and it was chilly!  I doubt it got up to 40 at all.  I know that my the lat afternoon the humidity had gone up and really started to feel the chill in the bones.  But all in all it was a great day and there were lots of folks there.  Which suprised us, we really didnt think that there would be that many there with the cold weather.

This coming Saturday, during the last weekend of KCRF, it is supposed to top out at 50 deg!  I have the garb for it (I'm a sailor, and I wear a warm thrum cap, and have a wool outer frock), but I'm gonna go out to the Columbia Faire.  Good luck this last week!  I had really wanted to go out for this last weekend, since I've heard it is usually the best one!  Also, had hoped to say hello to Finvarra, and introduce myself.  Cheers!

no shiner bock TKM. but i hate kansas with a passion, and the only thing i do in kansaSS is the KCRF. and the majority of the jobs, culture, sports teams, museums, good restaurants, cultural activity, nightlife, reasons to live, are in missouri. kansas is good for one thing and one thing only, leeching off of missouri. and stealing their businesses into joco and wyco with tax breaks that are gonna ruin that sorry weed puller county someday.

best thing that coulda ever happened was the festival moving to missouri a few years ago!!!!!!!

sorry jackass jr, but ks has ruined the metro by offering ridiculous tax breaks to lure businesses out of jackson county into joco, leaving jackson county to rot. starting to come back finally ( jackson ) but joco / wyco STILL doing it. i mean, taking cerner AND the wizards, when, jacko was already tearing down bannister so that the wizards could build their stadium and expand cerner. this is 2009 wyco/joco, steal businesses FROM OTHER STATES. i have lived all over the country, never seen it happen in any state but kansASS. seriously, i kid you not little brother. sprint, yellow, lee, almost every business at the "legends", everything, comes from jackson county. the average jackson county voter voted to fix the stadiums out of fear of western wyco taking them too.

I'll say it again: And you wonder why the KCRF forums are so dead compared to other, smaller faires?

What POSSIBLE benefit to 'your' faire or 'your' forum can there be to insulting a large number of patrons, playtrons, friends, and cast members about things they very likely had no involvement in or control over???

Congrats.  You've made this the first year I haven't regretted not being able to make it out to KCRF.  Well done.

Hear, hear Feline!  I prefer to stay silent most of the time on the KCRF forums rather than get into the sure battle that voicing any opposing thoughts is sure to bring.  Perhaps someone might be better served with a personal blog that they can rant/complain/insult on than an open forum dedicated to the SHARING of thoughts and experinces.

And now...wait for it....the obligitory insult to me that is sure to follow.

no offense anyone, i just hate to see urban areas decimated. i wasnt too happy with how downtown kansas city, kansas got no love at all while it all went to legends. i hate seeing any area become blighted, especially when it was a forced issue.

fyi, the kcrf forums have been dead forever. this season with a few heated battles over opinions on faire management and pay scale, etc, there is finally some activity. perhaps heated discussion was a good thing!!

Amy, we left about 2:15, after 3 Pints Gone's set.  I was standing at the back.  The sailor in the blue thrum cap, brown frock, canvas trousers, orange stockings, and black shoes.  My son was also there in a dark green doublet with gold trim and mauve trousers.

Small faire.  I regret I missed you!  Not too many beverages at all.  No adult beverages.  I had a couple of cups of coffee from the end of the lane, and my son had a few glasses of "pirate punch".

I'll have to insult you at another time, HA!

YES!  I did see you!  You and your husband(?) were wearing heavy wool cloaks.  I think Bill said something like "There goes the neighborhood, or there is the neighborhood!" when you two walked up.

How did you like it?  I posted something a small review on the "Smaller Midwest Faires" thread.

Sorry we didn't get to visit, and I was unable to insult you/buy you a cup of beverage.

Well, the warm temps and rain have dissolved almost all of the snow in the KC Metro this week.  Has this been a crazy winter or what?  No snow until Christmas, and then LOTS of it, along with incredibly cold temps, and now, not even 1 month later, it's like March weather.  Crazy weather this year.

Well, I think you're about outta luck until Nov or Dec of this year.  It has been in the 50s during the day, and into the 30s at night.  Unless there is some freak snowstorm, you'll need to wait until after KC Renfest season is over.
