Title: New Place
Post by: Muffin on April 24, 2009, 03:51:38 PM
Hey all!

I know this is not ren related, but wanted to get this on the MN board somehow.. Feel free to remove or delete it...

Bacardi and I are on the hunt for a new place to live as of June 1st!

Looking for a house (preferably - would consider a townhome or duplex, no apartments though), would like 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, but will work with what we got...

Would like to keep the rent in the $1200 range if possible...

If anyone hears of anything can you let us know!

Thanks!!

That is more than double my mortgage payment.  What area are you guys looking at?

I know it would be smarter to buy, but I don't know that (I) we are in a financial position to do so....

We have a pretty broad area we are looking in around the cities.. As far as NW as Monticello/Big Lake, North - Brooklyn Center, Coon Rapids, etc.., South - Prior Lake, Chaska, Shakopee, and Apple Vally, Eagan, etc..

We bought a foreclosed home so our purchase price was only$58,000. Awesome deal for 2 lots,  2000 sq ft and a 3 car garage.

I do not know your exact situation (dwn pmt, etc) but a possible consideration over buying or renting...contract for deed.  Many townhomes are offering this, including some stand-alones in my neck of the woods (Rogers).  No doubt there are similar offerings all over town.  A good option for many, something to consider.

Good luck!

I'm not sure what she's got it listed at, but my neighbor across the street just put her townhouse on the market this week.  While Hugo wasn't in your list of areas, its closer to the cities than Monticello, so .. yeah. :)

Yepper, it is way cheaper in WI. Even here in south side of Milwaukee my mortgage is half that for a three bedroom ranch

Yeah... don't ask us what our mortgage payment is.  LOL

I vote you find something up here Rogers, Monticello, ELK RIVER, area!!!  ;D

Remember, Northstar commuter rail coming in soon.  Direct run to downtown Mpls.  Easy commute.  Home cooked meals with MG.  Hey, how did that get in there?!?

I vote northern suburbs also!

That's quite a wide range of territory you guys are looking at. Aren't you worried about the drive to work?

We're checking out a place in Coon Rapids on Monday..  :)

yes and no on the drive to work... It's really great right now being in SLP, 10 miles to work for me.. but there is nothing really around this area that has what we are looking for that isn't WAY expensive!! So I'd rather drive a little bit farther to work and have a big yard to come home to!!

THere are some decent houses in Robbinsdale for rent , or to buy that are only about $75k.  I'd be buying right now if I had the credit.

That was one reason we picked Anoka. We really wanted Bloomington but when the houses are 20k cheaper for the same thing in the North it was a no brainer. We have a lot of homes that are selling for really cheap here. We have a few forclosed homes on our block that have been sitting for months, one for almost a year. We could so get into a better, cheaper home right now but can't sell ours. Good Luck!

So.... Lucky for all of you... We've got movers coming on the Sunday to move the heavy stuff..

Title: Re: New Place
Post by: Muffin on May 18, 2009, 09:51:38 AM
Apparently I spoke to soon... Our mover(s) have backed out on us...  :'(

So I am now putting out the call to anyone who can help on Saturday May 30th..

I will be picking up a U-Haul truck on Friday May 29th, and Steve and I will start loading it up that night, there are a few heavy items that I may or may not be able to help lift..

Here is what I can think of as far as the heavy stuff...
Washer and Dryer
Safe (not a huge one, but heavy all the same)
42" T.V.
2 - 25" T.V.'s
Couch
oversized chair and ottoman
Armoire

The move will be between St. Louis Park and Coon Rapids..

There are two flights of stairs in the townhouse we are moving out of, the washer and dryer and one of the 25" t.v.'s are in the basement.. So up one flight of stairs and out the front door.. I have a dolly so once they are up the steps they can be wheeled out.

The Armiore and one of the 25" t.v.'s are upstairs, so down one flight of stairs and out the front door..

We will of course have beer and food for anyone that can help us out!!

Depending on the Hannah schedule, it looks like right now that Dan and I would be able to help.
I don't know how much he can lift since he hurt his back, but Steve helped me move once or twice so I figure I can repay the favor myself.
If we have Hannah that morning I won't be available until after 12.  But if we have no Hannah (and if Dan isn't working) then I can be there anytime... I think.
I will double check with Dan... but I am fairly certain I can be there to help.

If that is the safe I think it is, that thing is pretty heavy!

I will see about being able to help out that day. I have a couple of friends who are also moving that weekend and the potential of being out of state, but I definitely want to help out if I can, especially since there was some help with moving my stuff out on a couple occasions.

So I just found out that Dan works that day from 7-3, but there is no reason that I can't come help out.
So just tell me when and where you want me and I will come help as long as I can.

I guess I miss a lot of stuff when I don't log on for a while!..

Congrats on the new place guys; that's awesome! Quite a crew of you all on the north side side now. However, I'd be remiss if I didn't say that I like it here on the south side just fine!...LoL

As for the moving thing. You know, I'd REALLY recommend hiring a moving company. That's what Gin and I did when we moved from out apt. into our home, and it made things SO much easier. We had everything all packed up (and that's the trick....having everything all boxed up and ready to go when they get there. If you pack on the fly it takes longer and ends up costing you more, since the rate is about 100 dollars an hour) and they came in and loaded everything up and hauled it to our new home and unloaded it all in about 4 hours. They great thing about using a moving company is that they are insured. If they break it, they pay to replace it. We used 2 Men and a Truck and it cost us 500 dollars (100 of that was a tip to the 2 men part of the equation). We are VERY glad we decided to go that route. That way we didn't have to worry about people backing out on helping us move at the last minute (something that happened to us when we moved into out apt. together). We didn't have to worry about making multiple trips back and forth with pick up trucks. We didn't have to worry if the weather was bad (since their big arse truck has a roof!). We didn't have to worry about doing any heavy lifting (since not only do they load it up they will unload it into the room you want it in). Etc. and so on. We figured that 500 bucks we spent on the moving company was money well spent. We got it done in 4 hours instead of things being an all day affair that would have ended up in us stressing out over things and probably would have taken us about 4 times as long to accomplish had we done it ourselves with help from friends.

If you guys can afford it, I'd would seriously look into it. The peace of mind you get from it worth is!  And the price, when you subtract the difference of renting the U-Haul and paying for dinner and beer for your helpers isn't all that much more.

Gin and I were going to originally going to go the route you guys are, but some friends of ours, who used a moving company when they moved, talked us into going the moving company instead. We are both so glad that we ended up changing our minds and go with moving company.

Storm has a point.  Hire the movers and have the friends help with the unpacking!  Pot luck dinner to warm the new place and you're all set!

I would very much like to help get you moved in and settled but I'm hoping to have my yard sale that weekend.  Still can't park in my damn garage.  *sigh*  Gotta get this furniture out!  LOL

You don't happen to need a 7ft oak dining table and 8 chairs for $800 (purchased for $2500), do ya?  :D
*edit* table has a 20 inch leaf, as well.

hmmm . . .

So, where and when is the move going to happen?
Title: Re: New Place
Post by: Muffin on May 19, 2009, 09:12:22 AM
We had movers........ Movers we could afford with all the other moving expenses... They have backed out on us... Pretty sure we can't get anything else lined up in time that will fit our budget..

Believe me, I would much rather have movers, moving sucks, I am tired of it, and I don't like to burden friends with even asking for help...

But since we don't we just wanted to get the word out that if anyone was willing to help we would appreciate it....

The move is taking place on Saturday May 30th... St. Louis Park to Coon Rapids..  Would like to get going early, but will take any help we can get... My guess is we will be all loaded up and ready to roll by no later than 2:00 pm if all goes right.. Steve has a work meeting in the morning so I am on my own for a while..

Steve and I can handle most of it ourselves.. There are just a few items that might be a little too heavy with my back issue (spondylolisthesis) but if it comes down to it, we'll make it happen..

Title: Re: New Place
Post by: Storm on May 19, 2009, 10:49:11 AM
Spondylolisthesis....now there is a term I have not heard in a long time!

Muffin, you are the 1st person I know that also has that condition. I found out I had it about 15 years ago during a physical I had to take for a job I applied for. I was surprised to find out I had it since I was an avid weight lifter at the time. The ironic thing is, I lifted weights with my chiropracter! When I found out I had it, I asked him if he knew I had it (since he had worked on me several times and had taken X-rays). He said he did, but that it wasn't anything to worry about since it's more of a developmental problem then anything (I have the kind that you have since birth...I am actually missing 1 small bone in my back). Once you are an adult your back pretty much stabilizes and it shouldn't cause you a lot of trouble. He said that is why he told me not to do straight leg dead lifts or squat more then 350 lbs. He said if I did have back pain from it as an adult just to come in and he'd take care of things. That is pretty much what I have done. It really hasn't caused me a lot of problems. I just take care when I lift things to make sure I lift with my legs, and if I do any really heavy lifting to put on a weight belt. When ever I get any pain I don't mess around and go in and get adjusted and that usually takes care of things for me.

Right now my back isn't a problem when lifting things. Of course, my busted knee is another story. That makes it real difficult to carry things around. Luckily for me a glass and a 12 oz bottle are weights I can handle right now!...LoL

As for the moving company. Even though it is short notice, I bet they are real slow right now so you might be able to find something affordable. When we moved I called 2 Men and a Truck about a month before we moved and they told me to call back 2 weeks before our move to set up an exact time and date. Can't hurt to try.....
Title: Re: New Place
Post by: Muffin on May 19, 2009, 11:24:31 AM
yeah thanks Storm... my back issue came from playing sports when I was younger, I discovered it about 8 or 9 years ago when I threw my back out and went in for x-rays.. The last 4 vertebrate in my back are in a stairstep position and one is cracked. I have been told not to lift anything over 25 lbs, or wear heels (ha! yeah right!!!), who can live lifting only things less than 25 lbs?!! So I do it anyways, and just pay for it later.. I will more than likely face surgery if I ever plan to have children.. Chiro's are quacks, you know that right?  ;) they are not real doctors, they don't ever fix anything, which is why you just keep going back...

We are not getting movers (unless you are offering to pay for them, in that case you are my BFF! hee hee).... We will do it ourselves... Anyone willing to help, it is greatly appreciated!! If not, no worries, I'll just add you to my list.. ha!  ;)

Saturday Steve has a meeting until 11:30 am..

So anyone who is willing to help we are looking at starting at noon. Hopefully there won't be too much left to do, and we can get this all done quick!!

We will have food and beer and other goodies at the new place when we are all done..

If anyone needs the address just let me know!

Much moving was accomplished, lots of laughing and only a small amount of breakage.   Not too shabby.

I got home about 11:30 last night.  Course we were done with the work LONG before that.  Needed some time to soak up all the celebratory new home beers before hitting the road.  Wanted to get up and get moving this morning, even though our new home owners graciously prepared a proper bed for me, just in case.   :D

Can't wait to see the place with everything put away and set up. *STORAGE STORAGE STORAGE!*   ;D  I really like driving down your street.

Well geez, and here I thought I got home too late from work to come over last night.  For those of us who couldn't make it, when's the next BBQ so we can see the new place?  ;D

Thank you Thank you Thank you for all of your help!! A million trillion times over!! We couldn't have done it without all of you!!

The place is slowly coming together.. I've spent the last two days scrubbing out the kitchen (was mighty dirty! Bleh!!) but things are starting to be put away and I am hoping to move on from that room and into another!! (and then start the touch up painting and removing the paint that has been slopped every where.. seriously, you have to try to be that sloppy with the painting!!!)

Once we are all settled in there will be a BBQ/party planned!! I am figuring sometime in either late June or early July!

Thank you again!!!  :-* :-* :-*

I'm so glad I was able to be helpful.  It seems like my best intentions go awry with stuff like this so the star must've aligned just right for us.  Huzzah!

BTW, I love to organize.  *hint hint*  I'm just sayin'.   ;)
