Would it surprise you to know I have two R/C versions of this one...a 63" and 76" wingspan?  One is the "razorback" and the other a later "D" bubble canopy model.

And the reason you have not invited me out to fly is????  :o I mean I do have a private pilot licence... ;D I was lucky enough to see one take off in front of me down in Houston. Did not have my camera in the plane that time.  :( But never again...

Heck, my own family doesn't want to go out to the field!  I welcome visitors...even give opportunities to fly!  You'd be amazed how many private pilots are into R/C.

Here are two of my favorite "flyers"...

My Chipmunk in Swiss markings...

The Jud! Always a favorite. When I was a just little a wee lad I remember 4 distinctive prints that hung in on me bedroom walls. They were the presidents of the U.S, astronauts of Apollo 11, flying tigers over Burma and P-47  thunderbolts strafing a train yard in Germany.

I gotta mention Richard Ira Bong or Major Richard Bong who was the United States' highest-scoring air ace who shot down at least 40 Japanese aircraft during World War II flying a P-38.

Sadly Richard went back to the states after his 40 kills. While testing a new aircraft  the P-8hooting Star he lost control of the plane shortly after take off the plane malfunctioned Sadly he lost his life on the day Enola Gay dropped the bomb on Hiroshima. He had ended up with 200 combat missions, and over 500 combat hours under his belt

Good to see Robert Johnson on the list. He flew a Thunderbolt for the 56th squadron in Europe. Read his book in high school, he took over 200 rounds in one conflict and still got his Jug back to England. He passed away back in 1998.

I remember this incredible story about a thunderbolt pilot that got separated from his squadron.  On his way back to the base he was pursued by a German ace that riddled his P-47 over and over again. After engagement after engagement, and to his amazement at being unsuccessful at downing the P-47 the German pilot flew up along side saluted the pilot. tipped his wing and let him go.  Was it Robert Johnson??  They even shared the story on the Military Channel sometime ago. I just can't remember the pilots name.  Anyone?

Lets not forget another P-47 Ace "Gabby Gabreski"

Lot's of great pictures going on here. But I also loved the bombers. B17G Super Fortress baby. One hell of a BUFF. Here's one of the B-17 nick named The Thunderbird. She was used primarily as a trainer for new flight crews on their first missions. She had a 100% safety record. Every crew that took of with her came back home safely.

I love anything with wings. One of my favorites is the DC3/C47 whose exploits before, during, and after WWII are legendary. One  C-47 in the Pacific had a Japanese fighter expend all its ammo on it and still flew. The Japanese pilot, not wanting to lose face, rammed the C-47, taking the top of the rudder off. The C-47 made it back to base but the Japanese plane crashed. This was the only transport plane credited with downing an enemy aircraft during WWII !!!!!

That delta wing bird in the video is a Mirage, either a 3 or 5.  I always thought that delta wing birds were like the sports cars of aircraft, built for speed.

I was going to post one, but since you did...

My uncle flew a P-38G during WWII as a fighter in the Pacific.  The plane had its trials as cavitation problems made the plane unreliable sometimes, but this was eventually addressed, I understand.

I'm partial to the plane that my hunny (Rune) flew in while in the Navy.  The Lockheed P-3 Orion.  Sub hunter or Sky Pig or Flying Target.  Think Defense, not Offence.

But now that the cold war is over they do more...  Hurricane hunter for NOAA.

Fire fighter.
Rune spent the latter part of his career stationed at Moffett Field where he saw lots of "interesting" aircraft courtesy of NASA and Ames Research who were also there.

A big part of his squadron, VP-50, were lost just after he got out.  March 21, 1991 off the coast of San Diego there was a midair that took out both Crew 2 and his Crew 11, all 27 hands and many friends lost.
http://www.vpnavy.com/vp50mem_04dec98.html (http://www.vpnavy.com/vp50mem_04dec98.html)

And if you really want to get your geek on...  Watch some of the old Star Trek NG episodes and when they show them beaming down a 5 foot tall, round, gray tube...  Usually a "Transporter Field Enhancer".  They're actually the storage tubes for the sonobuoys that the P3 would drop for listening.  ;)

Helicopters fulfill a lot of roles: they get in close and destroy enemy tanks, they aid in rescues, and they bring supplies and equipment in  theater --  where ground troops need them most.

You are...The Barrage Balloon!

You are big, fat, and pretty much hang out in one place all day looking for trouble.  Wrinkled and sagging, your pathetic existence is solely to get in the way of others.  Friends say you are full of hot air.  You expend gas at every conceivable opportunity.  You'd like to travel but your job and family tie you down to one spot.  You wait in agonizing anticipation for an incendiary bullet to come along and bring the sweet release of...

O.K., so I am working in Boston this week and my rep says he has a surprise for me.  After 3 hours on a plane, I'm whooped!  He gives me an address for the GPS and off I go to meet him for dinner...at a small airport...with a grass strip...and a mint condition 1941 L4 "Grasshopper" (a military Cub).  Four tiny gauges and no radio!  She was painted desert tan with the big 'ol "Stars and Bars" painted on the side.  90 minutes of flying up and down the coast near Portsmith!  Me, not the instructor, ME!   Had to take off and land twice.  ;D ;D ;D

As Will Smith said in Independance day, "I have got to get me one of these"!

Oh, it was a beautiful night, If you are familiar with the Cub, we were "forced" to leave the window up and the door down.

Edit:  Found a pic of the field online.  You come in on the right (notice the "cut-out" in the trees).  It's a tad tight but not too bad...

They can take a punch to one flew though 4 radio towers in Lima Peru lost 15 feet or the wing and landed like it was nothing.I still work part time on these.I wish I knew how to post photos AAARGH

Great thread ! My dad  was   a Air Force  man.  Served  during  the  Korean War.  After  the  war  he  was  stationed  for  a few  years  at S.A.C  in   Nebraska  where  he   woked with B-29's.    We always  had pictures  or  models of planes  around  the house.

In the  eraly  90's  dad   and  I   went   to the Air  force  museum  in Dayton,Ohio.   Very  worth  the  trip.

When  my husband  and  I  were living  in California  and  he  was  working  for  the  Navy  we  would  go  to  the  annual  airshow  at  Miramar ( was home  to  the  Top  Gun  fighter  squadron).    It is  an excellent  air  show.  Got  to see  the  Blue  Angels  in  person   afew  times.  What  a thrill  to  see in  person.   Also got  to see  a  Harrier  jet, which are  awesome  to watch  maneuver.

The  Fort Drum  army  base  here in  upstate  , northern New York where my husband  currently  works   holds  a annual  air  show.  Matter of  fact it  is  coming  up this  month.  The last  weekend  of  June.  Last  year  they had  alot of  vintage  aircraft  from World  War  II.
It is  well worth attending  for  those  who  love  planes.

I have a sad story about planes and performance squadrons such as the Blue Angles and Thunderbirds

Many many years ago while I was staying with my dad at Cheyenne Frontier days (i think I was in my early teens) As this was July 1977. I woke up one morning to heavy fog and rain (It had been raining all week at Frontier Days that year) I had just tossed on my clothing and was sitting down to eat some breakfast with my sister and stepmother at the time.

We all heard this very LOUD boom and the whole area shock followed by more booms and shaking. I looked outhte camper window to see things falling from the sky. I decided to go running out to investigate (maybe not so smart at5 the time) As I looked around there was a field of debree from one end of the parking lot to the Arena area (just west of were our camper was parked)

Many of the rodeo and horse racing participants camped here at the time. The fog was so think you could see most likey 100 yards. What I noticed in the debree looked like air maps and aircraft debree and then I spied a piece of the canopy of a Thunderbird jet (T-38 Talon) I think they were flying at the time) The name read Captain Charlie Carter.

I looked around and noticed some others gathering about and heard sirens coming in. There were two RV's with creases in them from where it looked like the T-38's wings just barely touched them about 5 or so feet from the ground. About 30 minutes arealier another camper was parked intat location but had left. My camper had been about 25 yards from these two campers and the now empty parking spot.

There was still paper debree falling about and as I headed towards the area the T-38 was sitting on it's one wing on the ground and the other straight up in the air. two bulls lie decapited in the pin one cut in half long ways the other width wise. Looking down the horse track was a parachute and what looked like an ejection seat.

Sadly Captain Carter lost his life in this accident as he avoided the populated camp ground. His co-pilot was a reporter that managed to eject and suffer a broken leg landing in the arena some distance away.

Had Captain Carter ejected with his co-pilot many people would have lost there life that day but he was a hero and went down with his plane to avoid injuring others.

I still remember that day very vivadly almost as if it was yesterday and not 30 some odd years ago. For many years I always looked for the tree on the east end of the faire grounds (west of the Air Force base) That Captain Carters T-38 clipped on his flight path.

I heard reports he had lost power on take off and had no choice but to crash, but this is un-offical. Lucky too that this was early in the moring or the stands could have been full of people to watch the days rodeo and horse racing. Frontier Days were canceled for that day as it should have been for saftey reasons (Plane fuel in the stock pins and a downed plane that could explode. They however never evacuated the camping area just 25 - 50 yards from the downed plane.

Here is a round of HUZZAH'S to those pilots who do performance shows and to those who have lost their lives for this country. And a silent thank you to Captain Charlie Carter who sacrificed his life that day to save the lives of many others including myself

You are very welcome for both.

There aren't to many people that would remember that even as there were maybe 200 people in the camp ground that day if even that. And while my sister was there a few years latter in school she wrote a speech on it and had to ask me for the details. It's funny what we remember and what brings those memories to the fore front of our being. I guess just seeing Blue ANgels did it for me.

Once again HUZZAH to Captain Carter and all of those who lose their life for us.

Me favorite period of aircraft runs ta the mid 1930's. Nonmilitary, built fer all out speed, an in an odd way , pleasin' ta the eye.  Granville's GeeBee's, the Walker Bulldog, various Brown racers, Cauldrons and Folkerts creations all have a place here. A mystery plane was built in this period, hidden at the beginnin' o' WW2. Never flown, it passed through different hands, an now graces the EAA museum. T'would not look out of place next to one o' Rutan's composite designs or sittin' on the ramp next ta a Stealth fighter.

Above: The Proteus in flight.

The Scaled Composites Model 281 Proteus is a tandem-wing high-endurance aircraft designed by Burt Rutan to investigate the use of aircraft as high altitude telecommunications relays. The Proteus is actually a multi-mission vehicle, able to carry various payloads on a ventral pylon. An extremely high-efficiency design, the Proteus can orbit a point at over 65,000 feet (19,800 m) for more than 18 hours. It is currently owned by Northrop Grumman.

Proteus has an all-composite airframe with graphite-epoxy sandwich construction. Its wingspan of 77 feet 7 inches is expandable to 92 feet with removable wingtips installed. Proteus is an "optionally piloted" aircraft ordinarily flown by two pilots in a pressurized cabin. However, it also has the capability to perform its missions semi-autonomously or flown remotely from the ground.

When my husband was flying from 1975 to 1991. we would schedule the Cessna 182, pack up the kids, and head over to Osh Kosh for a few days. Now to see Vintage Air Craft, we drive. I remember when we flew up to St. Paul Downtown Airport off Plato Ave. to see the B-29 named FiFi!!

In Ohio in Dayton, is the Air Force museum. That is one place that should not be missed. There are hangars full of Air planes from WWI to Modern days, including a B-52!! The BoxCar was the B-29 that dropped Little Boy over Nagasaki in August 1945. My Great Uncle, Tony DaVersa, was a Ball Turret Gunner on a B-17 during WWII that was shot down over the Bering Strait in late 1944 by the Japanese. His flight crew was based out of Moscow at the time and was on his way home for a Sympathy Leave.

SR-71. Also known as the Blackbird. A spy plane able to travel at Mach III speed. Saw one of these at the Air Force Museum in Dayton, Ohio. Wright-Patterson AFB.

Actually, that's a picture of the F-117A "Nighthawk".  The highest speed these could reach was just under Mach 1.  The Air Force retired the F-117A last year about this time.

The picture below is the SR-71 Blackbird, which was retired in 1998, 10 years prior to the Nighthawk.

When I was younger I had kits that were model rockets for both of these.  The SR-71 flew great, but the the F117A not so well, and I can see where it got its nickname "Wobbly Goblin".  I got one flight out of it.   ::)

All the grace and beauty of the SR's falls away when ya have ta clean up the mess they leaves behind. Up close theys truly a bunch 'o ill fittin' parts leakin' tens 'o gallons 'o fuel per hour. Think I spent half me overseas tour on standby while the crews pumped evil named fluids in an out ::)

Every July 4th weekend, the Collings Foundation as the Nine-O-Nine (B-17)and the All American aka Dragon and her Tail (B-24 actually the only fully restored flying B-24) where I live. They buzz my house all day long giving rides. Didn't go and see them this year as Saturday was Faire day and Sunday was clean faire garb, relax and recoup for the work week. I've seen those planes almost every year. Last year I didn't have my camera as it was in the repair shop. Oh well maybe in the future I will see them again. They had a B-25 with them last year s well as the twin seat P-51. The P-51 was with them this year.

OH a friend of mine took a ride in them many years ago ($350) for a 30 minute ride. He had a friend who was best friends withthe pilot and they let him take the controls for 15 minutes. He took video looking down the bomb site. Said it was a real thrill to ride in it.

The plane called Nine-O-Nine is not it's original name and used to be a slurry bomber. I found that out last year and often wonder if it was one my Uncle used to fly. He also flew the PB4-Y Privateer (Navy version of the B-24

Okay, so I was out on business to the airport in South St. Paul on Friday, and as I was leaving, saw this little guy getting pulled out of a hangar.  What is it?  I could have fit this little thing in my trunk, seriously.  The wingspan couldn't have been more than 10 feet.  It was really, really tiny.

Maybe 10 feet was a bit conservative of a guess.  Could have been bigger, but not much.  Maybe 14ft?  If you look at the shadow the wings are casting, they are about the same size as the one lane path it's parked on.  It looked like it was just big enough for one person to sit in.  Pretty sure it wasn't RC at that size.

I normally go to PARF on Saturday but the weather was calling for 80% t-storms, so I went on Sunday (yesterday). It turned out to be a gloriously sunny day for the Pyrate Invasion. I brought the 41" RC pirate ship. At 5 PM I returned everything back to the van, and once stowed, I returned to the Shire for one last privy stop. Looking up, a B-24 Liberator bomber was flying slowly over the Faire below the clouds, which were lit from underneath by the late afternoon sun. I stood transfixed in the parking lot as 2 of my favorite interests melded together in a Kodak moment. I had warm fuzzies all the way home.  ;D ;D ;D

As the various blimps fly up and down the Mid-Atlantic region, they moor at the New Castle County Airport in Delaware. Coming from the south, they fly up the Chesapeake Bay to the Elk River, then cross Maryland to get to the NCC Airport. Waching one of these drone up the river at about 100 feet off the water is awesome.

Many UK aircraft from the WWII era are rotting literally.  The Mosquito was almost entirely made of plywood!  Wood does not survive 60+ years exposed to the elements well.

Suppose it's ok to mention I know of one flying example...in 1/12 scale.  I happen to have an all electric R/C version of it!   ;D

I took a half day's vacation today. Since I start at 6 AM, I left at 10 AM. On my way home I drive past the New Castle County Airport, which is just south of Wilmington, Delaware. As I was passing in front of the terminal, I saw a white and blue 747 coming in for a landing. There is no regular service to the airport with planes that big. As it got closer I realized it was one of the Presidential Fleet. On occasion they do touch and goes for practice. Of course, it isn't Air Force One unless the President is aboard. About 10 seconds later I smacked myself in the head saying it is Air Force One! The President is here to attend the funeral of Vice President Biden's mother. I lost track of the aircraft when it got low enough to be hidden by the airport buildings. What a magnificent plane!
Glad I did not cut through the airport parking lot as I sometimes do. I'd still be there trying to explain my presence... ;D  ??? ;D

Here is a couple we took last year trying to get back from AzRF. He delayed us 30 mins getting out of there, I hate airport delays....

I took nearly 800 shots  :o  during the 2009 Wings Over Houston Air Show on Halloween Saturday, and one of my favorites is this one of a blade and hub.  I didn't take a picture of the whole aircraft, so I don't know what model it is.  Was anyone else there that recognizes this blade and hub, and knows what kind of airplane it's a part of?

Nice self-portrait in the spinner by the way!

I should add it is a "D" model.  One of the better restorations flying.  So few flying you begin to recognize each one from the tiniest of clues!  I've seen this one fly, she's a beauty!

It's interesting to see how my bright red shirt appears reflected in the red propeller hub.

Is that plane one of The Horsemen?  It was fun watching the aerobatic trio of Mustangs at the 2009 Wings Over Houston Air Show on Halloween Saturday.

What a deal - a used 65 year old single engine prop plane, for only $1,875,000 !   :o   ;)

(And it has "Dummy Guns", instead of real Machine Guns ... LOL!  ;D )

Ah, yes, but if you take into account cost of living and inflation rate increases since 1940, that comes out about right.

Remember it takes a college degree to fly a plane, but only a high school diploma to fix one; a reassurance to those of us who fly routinely in our jobs. After every flight, UPS pilots fill out a form, called a 'gripe sheet,' which tells mechanics about problems with the aircraft. The mechanics correct the problems, document their repairs on the form, and then pilots review the gripe sheets before the next flight.

Never let it be said that ground crews lack a sense of humor. Here are some actual maintenance complaints submitted by UPS ' pilots (marked with a P) and the solutions recorded (marked with an S) by maintenance engineers.

By the way, UPS is the only major airline that has never, ever, had an accident.

P: Left inside main tire almost needs replacement.
S: Almost replaced left inside main tire.
*
P: Test flight OK, except auto-land very rough.
S: Auto-land not installed on this aircraft.
*
P: Something loose in cockpit
S: Something tightened in cockpit
*
P: Dead bugs on windshield..
S: Live bugs on back-order.
*
P: Autopilot in altitude-hold mode produces a 200 feet per minute descent
S: Cannot reproduce problem on ground.
*
P: Evidence of leak on right main landing gear.
S: Evidence removed.
*
P: DME volume unbelievably loud..
S: DME volume set to more believable level.
*
P: Friction locks cause throttle levers to stick.
S: That's what friction locks are for.
*
P: IFF inoperative in OFF mode.
S: IFF always inoperative in OFF mode.
*
P: Suspected crack in windshield.
S: Suspect you're right.
*
P: Number 3 engine missing.
S: Engine found on right wing after brief search
*
P: Aircraft handles funny. (I love this one!)
S: Aircraft warned to straighten up, fly right and be serious.
*
P: Target radar hums.
S: Reprogrammed target radar with lyrics.
*
P: Mouse in cockpit.
S: Cat installed.
*
And the best one for last
*
P: Noise coming from under instrument panel. Sounds like a
midget pounding on something with a hammer.
S: Took hammer away from midget.

You're a 19 year old kid. You're critically wounded and dying in the jungle in the Ia Drang Valley , on 11-14-1965, Vietnam . Your infantry unit is outnumbered 8 - 1 and the enemy fire is so intense, from 100 or 200 yards away, that your own Infantry Commander has ordered the MediVac helicopters to stop coming in.
...
You're lying there, listening to the enemy machine guns and you know you're not getting out.

Your family is 1/2 way around the world, 12,000 miles away and you'll never see them again.

As the world starts to fade in and out, you know this is the day..

Then - over the machine gun noise - you faintly hear that sound of a helicopter..!

You look up to see an un-armed Huey!! But.... it doesn't seem real because no Medi-Vac markings are on it.

Ed Freeman is coming for you..!!

He's not a Medi-Vac so it's not his job, but he's flying his Huey down into the machine gun fire anyway even after the Medi-Vacs were ordered not to come.

He's coming anyway!

And he drops it in and sits there in the machine gun fire, as they load 2 or 3 of you on board..

Then he flies you up and out through the gunfire to the Doctors and Nurses.

And, he kept coming back..!! 13 more times..!!

He took about 30 of you and your buddies out who would never have gotten out.

Medal of Honor Recipient, Ed Freeman, died last Wednesday at the age of 80 in Boise, ID

May God Rest His Soul..

Glad to see this topic revived since I am no longer flying (commercial licence). the little jewel below is a 1943 Stinson V77 Gullwing we did a full restoration on around 10 years ago. You just HAVE to love the sound a big radial engine makes as it chugs along......

There is nothing in the world like the sound of a radial...  I wasn't a pilot, tho' my dad and one brother both were, and all three of us were members of the Confederate Air Force, now Commemorative Air Force. Spent a bit of time up close and personal to a lot of vintage aircraft.  JEEZ! I just realized that was 30 years ago!

There was a white Bi-Plane flying over Galveston for a few minutes last Saturday morning when I was down on the island for Dickens on The Strand (http://www.galvestonhistory.org/dickens_overview.asp).  It passed out of sight behind some buildings before I could shoot any pictures.

Dreg,

I have a few shots. Will look for then and post this weekend from the home comp.  We were in KS at Thanksgiving picking some of my stuf whcih was stored in that hanger. the plane hasn't been touched since I left three years ago and is in sore need of a wash and to be taken out for a flight. My father is 80 now and refuses to sell the plane even though he can barely get to the airport now. Darn shame after all that work to see it sitting...... >:( :'(
