Title: What's on your belt?
Post by: Charlotte Rowan on July 17, 2009, 01:24:48 PM
It seems like we had this topic before, but I can't find it. Maybe it was before the hackers. I thought it should be reprised.

So, what's on your belt?

On mine:

Mug frog and mug
A few pouches
Compass

Have a baldric for my sword now... good thing, because my belt was getting way too heavy!

At minimum, a pouch and a pair of leather gloves. Sometimes also a leather mask (for when I play the Loupe de l'amour - ze wolfe of love ;)), and occasionally (under my cape if possible) a camera and/or my daughter's epi-pens.

That's what my extra pouches are for - camera in one, epi (and lipstick, powder, etc in another) :)

What isn't!?

My mug loop, my carved Celtic blade, bells, a spoon, several pouches filled with all manner of bits ... and sometimes other bits including, but not limited to, a tail.

I'm too afraid to weigh mine.   ;D

On a normal day- pouch (phone, wallet, lip gloss, flask), drinking vessel of choice, and fan- now that I have learned Lady Elizabeth's brilliant solution to parasol carrying, I'll have a gauntlet attached for that as well...

Yeah, I've needed to buy more pouches for years. I just hate to pay what they cost and I suck at making my own.

If I may make so bold as to suggest the following.  Making a pouch is childs play.  Most of the work has already been done for you.   Go to any flea market, yard sale, salvation army, goodwill, grandma's closet etc. etc.   Find a ladies handbag that you like, preferably one with shoulder straps.  Cut the shoulder straps off and loop them in the back as for a belt loop.  You can use rawhide thong and punch holes through the straps and the back of the pouch, purse, whatever and viola'(in southern it's warrlarr) you have a pouch/purse.  Try to use one that has a flap to cover up any zippers that may be exposed.  The ones with the magnetic catch on the front I like.   I found one about a month ago that I modified in just that fashion and because it is covered in fur it nor resembles a scottish sporran.  It's not rocket science.  In mine I can carry 2 pucking rats, a small flask, a loaded coin pouch or two and my digital camera.  Plus my royal express in addition to my other plastic pieces.

Leather pouch
Wood purse
Strap and mug
Mini ducks
Whip
Riding crop
Tail

Need to try to find a spot on there to put my new wood bowl and silverware.

It is starting to get a bit ridiculous and heavy, think it is time to downsize.

Leather Mug and strap
Leather Pouch
Pewter Goblet and strap
Fan
Pin sash

I think that's it.  No weapons permitted at MDRF, so I don't have any on my belt.

Whenever I finally get around to making favors, I will have to get a second pouch for those.

I've only just begun building upon my belt (just bought it this season ^.^) but it's already overloaded . . . .

~ Mug and mug frog
~ Skeleton key
~ Bells
~ Camera bag
~ Two daggers
~ Leather coin pouch
~ Tail

And I have a separate pouch I tie around my waist from Papa Tink!

I need a wider belt because I need to add some skirt hikes.

Still building my collection, but so far, mug & dagger frog, 2 skirt hikes and a flask! Need some pouches - have high hopes to acquire a few at MDRF. Honestly not sure I like the belt itself now, although when I bought it, it was certainly the one I thought I had to have!

2 oak leaf bell sets from Griffen Works
mug strap
Leather mug
little knife

3 small windchimes(hence the nickname)
small wooden pail
1 brass feather
feather fan with a mirror on back
Leather strap with acorn design and more bells
1 small wooden spoon
A new silver bell from Griffen Works
A Burgundy sheep with a shaker egg inside
small black pouch for favor pin storage
1 Big headed doll
1 Green leather four leaf clover
I have to start a new belt due to the fact that belt 1 weights about 60 pounds & I now have back problems so I have to make a new lighter version.
Belt 2
2 Oak leaf bell sets from griffen works
1 Black pirate pouch
3 fox tails

Wow... I think your belt 1 wins the prize for most things hanging on a belt! also heaviest, probably. 60lb!

That is why I'm starting on belt 2. I have a sever spinal condition starting at T12 going down. The 1st belt I tried to remove 14 strands of bell to lighten it and whit the back killing me all the time it still had to much weight. So the new one is gonna be tin bells that wiegh a lot less and space them with the oak leaves. Plus it also gives me a reason to buy all the pretty colored tails for the back of the belt that I kept saying I had no room for. :)

Here's my new belt:

3 large nomadic Afghan jewelry pieces with little bells on them
100 Afghan coins ( not the fake ones made of tin!  ;) )
A string of metal nomadic beads
1 pink lace scarf
1 pink silk scarf
1 little silk pouch for my zills
1 small brocade  pouch for cash, ID, lady Visa, small comb, powder compact, lip gloss and my cell
a pink folding fan

My belt is more like a sash, so it's hard to attach stuff to unless its in the front. I'm thinking about making some sort of small Gypsy-esk back pack purse to keep purchases in so I can still dance fee of holding bags if the mood strikes me, lol.

I also sometimes carry combs or cash in my headscarf or turban!

Mine tends to be more like WindChime's, heavy. I bought a second to balance some of the weight and to achieve a more pirate-y look.

On any given day, I've:
- leather pouch with phone, keys, chapstick, contact drops, a smaller zipper pouch to hold change, etc.
- small leather pouch with money, checks, cards, etc.
- tankard strap with tankard
- folding fan

Added at times:
- skirt hitches (if I'm wearing my skirt anyway)
- favor pouch
- my Midsummer Knight's Dream (http://www.fantasypuppet.com/) puppet on its own or in a pouch
- a pouch with my contact juggling ball inside

I do like to carry a basket when in skirts because I can fill up a camelback with water and hide it in the bottom to fill the tankard out of. I go from a mug's worth of water to several liters!

Wow. That's a good question. For me, it also depends on exactly what I'm doing, because what I wear on my belt to faire is not the same as what I wear on my belt when I LARP.

To faire, currently, only my tankard. It hangs off by a string. I'll get more eventually, but right now, I don't have the money to. I carry a bag I made and I put everything in that for now. Though I want to get pouches to put on it.

When I LARP though, I have so much more. I have my boffer dagger, my pouch of magic items, my whistle, my pouch of coins, and my tin whistle. Not as much, but it is still fun.

But you were probably asking more about what's on my belt at faire. LOL. And sadly, there's only one thing there for now. Hopefully not for long. Hopefully I can add more to it soon. We'll see.

My belt usually contains
mug strap
leather draw string pouch-money
belt pouch-camera, epi pen
tail
small bell on a ribbon
rubber chicken on a string

When I wore my court attire, I had my belt so I could carry my jousting ribbons and a place to attach my belt pouch when I wasn't dancing and mostly for looks as my dance partners didn't like being whipped with pouches.

I usually carry a basket that I stuff with snacks, first aid, and other things I may need.

Pouch B: camera, ID, money  (Thinking of combining these two pouches into one large pouch)
a small drawstring pouch: plastic doggie clean up bags
mug strap w/ mug
ribbon with small sheep attached
wooden bowl ie. dog water bowl
scottish arisaid (held on by belt)

and sometimes my "offical kilt inspector" handkerchief.

On my belt is the following...

1) One pouch (for now) with:
  - ID
  - Money
  - Car key
  - Cloves (Djarum Blacks) and lighter, possibly American Spirits, though I usually leave those for the car
2) Tankard holder, complete with tankard (obviously)
3) If allowed, either my bastard sword or longsword

I intend to pick up a second pouch sometime, which will likely be used to split storage for less-used items (such as wallet, which I don't currently carry on me) and keys, and leave the smaller pouch for items I use more, such as cash and smokes.

I'm also contemplating a smaller, single-carry pouch which would hold a coin-purse, and use that for a bunch of the gold $1 coins, just to add a little authenticity to my tav... errr... transactions.  >.>

a) Two flintlock pistols - a Queen Anne Pedersoli ( shoved into me sash) and me trusty double barrel flinty in a holster

b) Me Lusty Leather flap top pouch - money, ID, keys, guitar picks ( always running out of those),  powder measure,  business cards, ink stamp pad, "P" branding iron ( to mark pirates).  Vent pricks for the pistols and for the cannons

c) Pipe pouch w/ tobacco

d) Me Baltimore cutlass ( baldrics having been out of style by 1710 by a few decades)

e) Mug frog ( though I rarely use it, the mug being in pretty much constant use)

The worst day is pirate day:

pouch (or two)
holster/pistol
holster/dagger
key ring w/about 15 skeleton keys (after all, it might unlock something, right?)
iron shackles
flogger
tail (or two)
frog/pewter stein

This year I'll also be carrying my new pipe & ciggies.  I don't often smoke, but I feel the need when I have an adult beverage in hand.  By the end of the day, I feel like my back is collapsing.  I also used to carry a sword, but due to mm curves it tended to stick out at an odd angle.

Ciao,

I can't say that I have really been to a Renn faire as a playtron or paytron, save my very first experience, so I am always on cast.  There are a few items that I wish I could have, (i.e. Camera!!!), but do not get to carry.  I know you all feel my pain in dressing in the morning; this is the order and what my belts carry...

Sword belt is mounted to the left.

My over-belt usually holds:
(starting on the left)
Large leather pouch, holding--->
--->Wallet/money, cellphone (on silent or off, of course), comp tickets, handkerchiefs
Back mounted Stiletto
Tankard
Hunter's pouch/flat cloth pouch, holding--->
--->timepiece, spoon, wooden straw, more handkerchiefs, food coupons

Finally my sash usually holds:
Canevale masque (on right)
(all on right side)
Strand of pearl beads
Drawstring pouch with give away coins as favors for children

Ladies I feel your pain, for Lord know I feel like I was wearing a bodice when it all come off at the end of the day!  LOL!

Sincero,
Don Vincente di Medici

Thanks for all the ideas, everyone! :) I'm attempting to hang more things off my belt, so this is giving me good inspiration!

Currently, for me, I have:

-A blue satin pouch (which I hope to change to a more period appropriate fabric)
-A fan from Spain (which I hope someday to change it to something more appropriate...sensing a theme, here?)
-My bell anklet (which, last season, I tied onto my belt and had much success with it - wearing it as an anklet wasn't so great, because it could come undone quite easily)
