With the event of the POTC movies we saw a HUGE surge in the popularity of pirates. Do you think that this has passed? Are pirates becoming passe? OR do you think the pirate passion is still all the rage?
I think the fad of pirates has passed. The novelty is gone. I think we'll still see that hardcores like you and me, but the "paper hat" pirates will be in far lesser numbers.
As long as there are boots and women who admire them, pirates aren't going anywhere. ;)
Then I'll never be without my boots again. Well, under certain circumstances, I could be enticed to part with them temporarily... ;) :D
I think I shall always be a fan of pirates, and love dressing as one! :)
I can't imagine it ever really dwindling - it seems to me there are a VAST number of pirates at the fair, so much so I often wonder why they don't just go ahead and make a Pirate Faire! It's a huge attraction for people, it seems.
I'm sure the fact these pirates don't suffer from scurvy or run you through with a sword to snatch your gold, helps a lot ;D

You raise an interesting question here.
If the government has its way, the pirate image will be put aside for something less ethically threatening like maybe Capt Ron.
But as your fellow "Sea Dogs" have pointed out, there's a hard core group of you, who won't let the image of the freebooting swash buckler vanish without a fight, and for that you're to be commended.
Please do me one favor though......ask this question again in 2010 after the release of Russell Crowe as Robin Hood..... :P ;) ;D

Amen to that, girlfriend ! ;D ;)
Probably depends on the event. Elizabethan events generally always had a number of privateers, seamen, and accompanying wenches. RPFS and RPFN had a Sea Dogs troupe for a number of years. It still exists and still sings at Northern. (A nephew is a member.) There are pirate festivals.
Tricorns were actually a bit later with referance to Elizabethan garb.
However, the adjustments made by vendors probably encourage it.
Did see fewer Captain Jacks this last year, but there was a truly stunning pirate wench and several others who were quite good. :)
After visiting Bristol two out of the past 3 Sundays, it doesn't look like their popularity is waning at all. There are as many as ever.
And later this summer, Captain Steve Dorset and Keeper of the Parrot, Redbird Annie Cardinal, both of the Ocean Motion, will visit the shire to plunder and have fun. ;D
The fad-chasers will always come and go........ but the core guilds are still stable and in some cases steadily increasing.
(an observation from an RF.com newbie....... but a pirate for ages!)

OH BUT there is a NEW PoTC on the Horizan, Avast ye Thar be Cap'n Jack.
Once that happens Pirates will once again be the craze
There will be 2 more POTC, but if I remember correctly Knightley & Bloom have opted out of at least the upcoming one.
Knightley opted out and Bloom won't be asked back, is more the case. PotC 4 is in the Disney "pipeline"-- no script, no contracts, no schedule. Depp is the only one committed so far. So we have a while to wait.
And this comes from a dear friend who's worked in Disney's central casting for over 20 years. She's never been wrong yet.
Not as long as The Backyardigans sing...A Pirate Says Arrgh :) ;) :D ;D
My informant is a Disney insider too, but your's has much more detailed info. Thanks for the update. :)
No worries! I just want them to make the movie sooner than later! ;D
When was the "Pirates of the Caribbean" ride first installed at Disneyland?
1967 and it is still one of the most popular rides at the Parks!
Pirates will always be popular, though there was a huge spike in the last few years. I was a Civil War reenactor when "Glory"/"Gettysburg" came out and we survived that craze, too.
Blackbead
Yeah, let's face it - pirate are jsut *cool.* I think there'll always be a good number of us scurvy types out at Faires. There may be fewer Depp impersonators, but pirates will always be around!
Pirates passe??
Nay, mate. There may well be fewer posers, but there will always be pirates.
Ye gods though, if the "in the works" Highwayman movie gains popularity though, I'm certain there will be a sudden influx of highwayman imitators to take their place. ::)
Sheeesh!!!
Yeah, but we know who the original Highwayman is, don't we? ;)
While pirates were given a gigantic boost in popularity due to POTC, and Jack Sparrow, enough is enough with the Sparrows at faire.
It was cute the first year or two....now it is time to hang it up and survive on your OWN originality.
What she said...pirates will always be cool. And at BARF, pirates have never been cooler...There are plenty of pirate fests, smaller faires all year long, and of course Gasparilla!! Pirates have been a part of the scene in Florida for years, long before POTC, not that it hurt one bit. Harrrr! Can't have enough frock coats for all occasions...
Although as the only one among us that can actually pass as a movie pirate...and I mean Cap'n Ron...C'mon Monk....you're hurtin' me emotionally here, man.... ;D
Oh, Seamus, Seamus--you forgot one very important thing as far as this Florida wench is concerned--
The attraction of a really great pair of boots. Now you take a great frock coat, a cavalier hat (not really a fan of tricorns) and add a great swagger--and I am pirate putty!
Besides, you and Mickey are my favorite BARF pirates.
You are the finest BARF has to offer.
Although Captain Blake did cause a seven-wench pile-up once....I guess I forgot to use my wench brakelights. ;)
Wenchie......you flatter me....it works... ;D
Besides, you know you be my all timey favorite Wench...You're always there with a quick smile, a kind word, lovely boots....and lipstick whenever i need it...
Wait, what......
*rummage in pouch*
No..I think I put it in my bodi--ooh, there it is! Nice and warm and melty, too.
*looks up*
Um....OK. See, I know with your skin tones, you need a cool rose colour...
Esc always did call me the fou-fou girl.
Well, what other wench would take you on long, philosophical walks all the while supporting you.... :D
Ah, good then.....we're off to the wenching!! And mebbe a quick stop at the petting zoo...
*OK, maybe this is more DeNiro than Kurt Russel ......*
Don't make me post that picture of that goat again..... ::)
I was hoping for a cute little sheep.......LOL
BREAK!!! We now return this thread to the subject at hand!!
"nothing to see here.....move along...."
You're a b-a-a-a-a-a-a-d man, Seamus! ::) :D
OK back on target--
I guess pirates may be more passe in a land-locked faire...but we have a plethora of pirates and pirate festivals.
The crowded bar at the last festival certainly proved that pirates are alive and kicking in the coastal communities of the Gulf Coast.
And the occasional mudslide.... ;)
I'm not bad, Jacky.....Occasionally misunderstood....usually inebriated... always frisky....
....nevermind...
*raises hand*
I sure as hell can vouch for that!
OK, I write for Pirates Magazine. And I can truthfully say the pirate community has never been in a healthier interest venue as it is now.
And as a fellow writer for that esteemed publication, I have to concur. Even here in the Upper Midwest, we have a healthy and thriving population of pirates. Just drop by MNRF and see for yourself!
LOL! You guys are a riot! ;D
I think pirates, much like gunslingers, bikers and, too an extent, gangsters will always be popular. That popularity may, occasionally, wax and wane, but they're all romanticized "Bad Boys" and that never goes out of style.
I was just watching a documentary about the annual pilgrimage to Sturgis, SD. It is Mecca for the biker crowd...I was struck (not for the first time, lookit my nose) how bikers and pirates have a lot in common. There was even a article in one of the mags to that effect. Same bunch, different garb.....

Even if they could find a way to replace Bloom's character as captain of the "Dutchman" I suspect a fourth movie with Knightly and Bloom would be a poor shadow of the first three unless they can find an exceptional plot. The problem is how to continue Capt. Jack's legend separate from Elizabeth and William.
The East India Company has been beaten, the main thing I can see is to play out the potential conflict with the remaining pirate lords for dominance of the Brotherhood, and maybe competing for support from Calypso, or some other watery supernatural being. But unless it's exceptionally written, it sounds more like a potential "B" TV series (ala Xena) rather than a good movie.
Wow, there were six other replies just while I was writing that
There's always the possibility of having Jack and Barbossa in a race for the Fountain of Youth, since both are intimately aware of their own mortality now.
But that is complete conjecture on my part. What good is immortality anyway? You get to watch everything and everyone you care about wither and die, again and again. Doesn't sound like fun to me. Sounds lonely.

The question is, has it reached a peak, and what will be the next renfair fad?
The Spring 2007 issue of Pirates Magazine has an article, 'Brothers in Rebellion: Why Bikers Love Pirates'
The article was written by Dave Nichols, the editor of Easy Rider and V-8 Twin.
Coincidently, he happens to be our editor too.
As long as there are a new generation of kids, there will be interest in pirates.
I do think that a POTC can work if they do a retro.
Maybe how Barbossa and Jack met...or how Jack became the way he is.
Sure, we can all blame it on Keith Richards.....

The definition of MUTTON--
"Marvos, I don't know what to do! I never wanted this position! I just wanted adventure and romance! I'm not equipped for this. Do you know what can happen? The crew could do mutton on me!"
"MUTTON?"
"Yes! That is when they look at you funny and make you walk on that board or set you out on a boat and say au revoir!"
"Mutiny."
"What?"
"You meant mutiny."
"Well...whatever! They make you Governer of your own Island. Although I suppose in my case it would be Governess, except there are no children to tend to---"
"Wench?"
"Yes?"
"You never make sense when you are excited."
"WHAT-EVER! Then they give you a gun with only one bullet. And I don't know how to load a gun! Maybe they would give me a sword--"
"Wench?"
"Yes?"
"Shut up. No one is going to 'mutton' you!" Marvos laughed.
"Fine! Go ahead and laugh but when I am waving farewell to you from a deserted island, at least you can say, 'Hey, she was mutton after all!' "

I prefer hands-on learning as opposed to book-learning.
No better way to get a feel for the subject matter...
I have to say, I'm getting a giggle out of a bunch of pirates worrying that their era might be coming to a close. True pirates and their biker counterparts just ride on and The Devil may care. :)
WOT?!?!? Worry?

Late arriving to this conversation....I blame the navigator!
Anyway, this has been a double edged sword for me for a while - since the first POTC. Been a pirate since we could piece together the garb - so 2nd year we'd gone to faire. With the recent movies there have been a gaggle of Capt' Sparrow's (some better then others) and well, it did feel a bit old after awhile. Great to see folk join our pyratical ranks, but it seemed to be totally opposite of what 'being' a pirate was about (a.k.a. a rebel, who not only marches to the beat of a different drum, but beat the drummer, said screw marching, and took to the proverbial sea! Not fad chasers.).
That said, it sure has been easier finding a nice hat, and other garb, as of late! Lots of it is even very creative, and working on the generic pirate theme, vs. Movie knock offs. I love seeing a new pirate shop at fair and looking at their loot! So from a shopping aspect, I hope the fad never fades too far - as I love new trinkets!

Whether in the mainstream or more of a "Cult Classic", they'll always be around in one form or another.
Pirates have been around since man's first attempt to transport anything of value on the water. In future centuries, pirates will be intercepting interplanetary shipments of goods. We're not going to disappear, my brother. Not ever.
Aye! As long as there are silk shirts billowing in the sea breeze and scuffed up boots and men in cavalier hats who look out from the rigging to the horizon with a faraway look in their eyes...
