Title: R/F Pin on ebay?
Post by: Celtic_Fae on August 04, 2009, 06:44:29 PM
Someone's selling one on E bay now. This is the link (http://cgi.ebay.com/Renaissance-Faire-Pin-Brooch-for-Jerkin-Doublet-Jacket_W0QQitemZ370240178532QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item563408c964&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14#ht_2519wt_1018).

You know, I'm not even sure what to think of that.  If someone has a pin they don't want, why didn't they offer it to a member here?  I'd like to know who this is, just for an explanation.  I still hold copyright to the design and reserve the sole right to sell these pins, and could easily shut down the auction.  However, I will not do this just yet.

I'd like to ask that whoever is selling it to step forward and offer it to a member rather than trying to sell it on ebay, or if anyone knows who this is.

Here is the seller's ebay profile (http://myworld.ebay.com/peppersstitchintyme/).  It looks like they live in Texas, and she has twin girls.  Anyone have any idea who this is?  Is it possible that this is someone who id trying to disassociate themselves with the forum?

I'm really not angry by any means, more or less just curious as to why this is happening.

Okay, I sent the seller a message, just in case they don't know we're still here after the big crash.  We'll see where this goes...

Just thought you ought to know, since you DO hold the copyright

Could it have been ground score?  Not ground score.

How cool you found that ad Kathryn.  Good eye!

I had 2 pins stolen off my banner at Bay Area Ren fest..... maybe the thief is trying to sell them?

On her listing she mentioned that she got it from the "old" renaissance forum.  Sounds like she bought it directly from here.

Depending on how much she gets for it, you could modify the design (FF, UHF, something) and make some money!   ;D

How odd this situation is....Maybe it's someone who joined but was never really that "into" the group, although if that were the case, why would they buy a pin?  I found it strange that they said in the add that it didn't go with their garb.  ??? Perhaps Deadbishop is right, and they don't realize the group still exists to offer the pin to, not that it would be hard to verify.

Well, I received a message from the seller.  Seems she did not realize that the forum was still operational.  I invited her back, so we'll wait and see where this goes!

Copyright or not, if she owns the pin she is legally within her rights to sell it.  It is the design you control, not the pin.  Advertizing collectables are sold continually on ebay.  So are all sorts of trade-marked items.

In otherwords...she cannot manufacture them for sale but can sell one that is legally hers.  Just as I can sell my MNRF merchandise that I purchased from the official MNRF booths.  You can sell an old Coke bottle with their trademark but you cannot produce copies for sale.

Now I'm going to watch the auction...if it sells for a million bucks we are all going to be rich!   ;D

What a strange turn of events! Did the seller say who she was on the old forums? It's kind of sad that some people still don't know we're still out here!

Holy Pewter Batman...$16.50 with days to go!

I think DB's sitting on a goldmine!

Knowing the way most ebay auctions go I'm guessing it will break MSRP.

Always a chance someone is in need of money, and selling stuff they care about. I'd hope the best for them.

I'd really like to see her rejoin the forum, if anything.  Seems she is a seamstress and sells garb on eBay and through her etsy shop.  I mentioned we have an active garbing/sewing section on the forum.  Hoping that might entice her to come back.

Oh, and I'm guessing the reason it has 6 bids at this point is because of the press it has gotten here.  Whoever has the current bid will save a whole buck if they win!  :D

Still, most creators like to know where their works end up, which is why I posted it here.  :) It sure is interesting to watch the sale process of a R/F pin off of r/f.com.

I owned and ran a brass rubbing business in the 1970's & 1980's.  Taught people how to make rubbings and then sold my own rubbings.

Imagine my surprise a few years ago when one day I was looking under the topic "brass rubbing" on Ebay and found a rubbing that had the description "made by famous brass rubbing artist Renee D---."

I quickly contacted the seller and told him/her that I was by no means famous, and it was the creator of the brass who was the real artist.  I never got a response back.  Interestingly enough, it sold for what I thought was a lot of money!

This person selling her R/F pin on ebay could make up to 3x what she paid if she bought it when I bought mine.  I bought 4 pins back in '05' on the old forum.  It is very dear to my heart and for these reasons.
1) It was part of the first batch of pins ordered. --I paid a little over $6 each.
2) Well, really, the pins were paid for by our very own and dear "John" out his own pocket.
3) He asked that we take the cost of the pins with the cost of shipping and donate it to charity for the Hurricane Katrina victims.  We only had to show him the proof of donation.
And that is why I will never sell or give my pin away.

Bidding ended on Aug 11 for the above mentioned pin and it sold for $16.50.  The same seller has put up for auction another R/F pin with a starting bid of $9.99.  Sorry for the lengthy link, but I'm not sure how to shorten it:

Wow..........mine is priceless......... ;D

I just looked at the new R/F pin for sale.......I think she should be stopped, even if she did buy it to begin with. How many more does she plan to sell?  >:(

I was kind of thinking the same thing.  And has she replied to emails sent from members?  If anything she should be selling them to members, not strangers.  It even has the same description.  Weird!

Especially since she's duping others into buying the for much more than what they could if they only went on here

Aren't the $20 on here? I have to admit, I'm the person bidding for the new one she put up right now. Because I can afford the pin for $12.50, but not $20.

Yeah, they are. Funny, I thought I remembered them being less.

I'm pretty sure the price was raised from $15 to $20 within the last 2-3 weeks. Because with the $15 price tag, I was going back and forth on buying one or not, but with $20, it's completely out of the question for me.

Being a big ebay user I am often amazed that people capable of navigating an ebay search cannot complete the same search on the internet.  So many times I see items sell used for well above the cost of new.  I've even seen items bid well above the same item listed as "Buy-It-Now".

Google is your friend!

The price of the R/F pins have been $20 for nearly 2 years now.  That price includes shipping.

Actually, I see a little humor in this.  Can you imagine if the people who won these auctions have no idea what R/F.com is?  They go to faire, and get accosted by members asking who they are on the forum, having no idea what everyone is talking about...  :D

Or maybe it's more sinister than that...Maybe my arch nemesis wants the pin to attend MNRF this weekend masquerading as me...Acting all drunk and womanizing to make me look like a horrible cad.  Now that I think of it I'm sure that's what's happening.  So if you see me this weekend schmoozing for free beer and grabbing things I shouldn't, remember it's not me!

Oh he shall rue the day!  ***shakes fist in air at nemesis***
