The weapons policy for this year states: Bows, arrows without tips, and peace tied weapons will be allowed. Huzzah! Lock this up before we get any arguements brewing, but I figured I'd give evryone whom carries a weapon to faire a heads-up. I as I've stated before am for both sides of the arguement both make good points, and should be considered.
Good to know. :)
( seeming as I just peace-tied my weapon tight last night )
:P
Since this policy is a hot topic and has been on the fence as to whether permanent or not, I have not as of yet procured a bladed weapon. As my pirate outfit is my favorite I will most likely get one at some point this year, but I don't believe it makes or breaks any ensemble. If MiRF deems it necessary to revoke this privilege (and it IS a privilege), I will inderstand and it will not effect my status one way or the other. I like all the ornamental hilts and such I saw last year, and I like that they are now allowed. I would not hesitate to alert security to anyone violating this policy, as I like it and want it to continue.
From what I remembered last year there didn't seem to be any issues (then again I'm not the greatest position to know all the problems happened). The security was tighter then most faires people with weapons could only go through one gate and individually peace tied and checked that weapon could not drawn from one source. Although it was longer to get inside the wait wasn't that bad.
As for the arguments I'm sure all has been said last year. I being part of the arguments that got a bit out of hand will for sure not be bantering about it this year.
Ah, yes I've been part of those arguements, too but nonetheless. It's all good. And as for getting a good looking blade just for costume/garb faire going. Check BudK catalog they have some good blades for pirates, I picked up the knock-off Jack Sparrow blade for my dad's b-day, and he got me a falchion for my b-day. And the falchion is good for pirate or rogue. Both from BudK. So yeah, get somethin cheap, but cool looking.
What is considered a legal "piece tied" weapon?

sumthin with a LOT of duct tape on it !! :)
*snort* Now I have the image of someone walking into Festival wrapped head to toe in silver duct tape. ;D
To be 100% certain of what MIRF deems 'legal peace tied weapon', you can call the office at (800) 601-4848.
However - and please note - this is my take on it. A legal peace tied weapon is a bladed weapon that can be secured into a scabbard with a zip tie to prevent it from being pulled from the scabbard. It is also arrows with the tips removed and an unstrung bow.
But, as I said, to be 100% certain, call the office.
Well thank you Ma'am for clearing that up for me.
For me, yes - zip tied so that no matter how you try to unbuckle you can't pull it out without physically cutting the peace-tie. I.e. - if you zip tie your weapon to a part of you scabbard that moves, you might want to put the tie in a place that is immobile altogether.
Basically for me, when Security is messing with me, they just come up to me and try like heck to pull my swords and knives out and when it doesn't move they say, alright... You're good. :P
Also keep in mind that it also means that all ends of the blade ( whether it be an axe, sword, knife, what-have-you ) must be covered with a hard enough scabbard or whatever that you CANNOT possibly injure anyone. For example, if you have a scabbard that has the chape ( the very bottom part ) missing, it is NOT peace-tied no matter how tightly tied you have it. Some small child that isn't paying attention could run into it and do some serious damage without you even knowing.
This is how it was explained to me years ago. Hope it helps.

Security at the gate requested my un-tipped arrows also be zip tied tightly together (so they could not be drawn individually) and left in the quiver. Makes sense, as even an arrow without a tip can do severe damage when fired from a longbow.
Yup yup....the best way to find out exactly what is OK when comming to the subject of weapons and how to peace tie your weapon correctly.....call the office.
Here is the number once more 800-601-4848

Flidais,
Do you have the ability to make a post and sticky it to the top of the MI forum with the office contact info? Sort of an permenant FYI post. Just a thought.
Thanks
Evrythin evrybody has added in detail are the exact rules they've been telling evryone so far. So go by what evryone says, but also call and check with the front gate, because it could change from one weekend to the next.
