Title: Things to do in Scarborough Faire Area
Post by: Lady Renee Buchanan on November 16, 2009, 05:46:59 AM
I know this is crazy, since it's so early, but I'm a planner.  Steve and I are coming to RenDezvous next April.  We got $120 round trip tickets from Chicago, and are flying out on Wednesday (we wanted Thursday but the seats were sold out on that day and Friday).  So we will have 2 full days of sightseeing before the RenDezvous activities begin.

We've never been to TX, and would like to do some sightseeing.  I've found a place called Fossil Rim Wildlife Center, where you drive in your car and there are African animals, like a drive through safari.  It sounds like fun, but I'd rather hear it from someone who's been there.

Southfork, where the TV show Dallas was filmed - worth a visit?

Anyone have any other suggestions?  Thanks for your input.

I actually don't know much of sightseeing spots in Dallas, but I've made the time a few times to go to Medieval Times.  It's about a 30-45 minute trip up from Waxahachie, it can be pricey, but the dinner is pretty good and the production values are better than other dinner shows I've been to.

http://www.medievaltimes.com/index.php

There is on in Kissimmie (FL), and one in Schaumburg (IL) so you may have already been.  But if not, it blends in nicely with Rendevous.

(Also, it says that the friday night shows during Rendevous are sold out...I would call, I just can't see how they can be sold out already!)

There are corporate-type discount tickets available for the shows at Medieval Times (http://www.medievaltimes.com/findcastles/dallas/), and some of your friends here on the Forum may be able to get some for you.  In the late 90's, Medieval Times allowed you to attend in costume (without weapons), which I did with some friends at least twice.  If that sounds interesting, you should probably call (214) 761-1800 and check on their current policy.

I've heard about Fossil Rim Wildlife Center (http://www.fossilrim.com/), but never visited when I lived in north Texas.  I know families really enjoy Fossil Rim, and there are a couple of dozen reviews on TripAdviser (http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g55902-d107468-Reviews-Fossil_Rim_Wildlife_Center-Glen_Rose_Texas.html).

Another nice place to visit is the Dallas Arboretum (http://www.dallasarboretum.org/).  There are beautiful gardens, and they've got a "Cool Thursday Concerts" series next Spring, with a show by The Kildares on the Thursday before RenDezvous.

Unless they've changed very recently, they do allow costumes.

Medieval Times DOES allow costumes, though there was an issue on the trip I was there, because apparently our pub wench had decided that because we were in costume, (and frankly, dressed better than she was) we were not going to tip because "Pirates don't tip well". What she didn't realize was that enough of us in our group (we had about 25 of us) were, had been, or had family members/close friends in the restaurant or bar biz, and so we tip VERY well... as our food server learned!

Also in the D/FW area are:

Dallas Zoo http://www.dallaszoo.com (http://www.dallaszoo.com)

Fort Worth Zoo http://www.fortworthzoo.com (http://www.fortworthzoo.com)

Ripley's Believe it or Not & Wax Museum http://grandprairie.ripleys.com/ (http://grandprairie.ripleys.com/)

Box zoos are excellent, however my personal preference is for the Fort Worth.

I haven't been to Southfork in YEARS, literally, so I have no idea what it's like anymore.

There are several good shopping areas, indoor & outdoor in the area: Grapevine Mills, Galleria, Southlake Town Center, Arlington Highlands (which is the closest to Waxahachie.

IN Waxahachie itself, you need to make a trip downtown (follow the road from Scarby) The Ellis county Courthouse is a sight to behold. There's good antiquing down College Street just off the square, the Ellis county museum has some really interesting and bizarre things, there's a nice hike/bike trail down that way as well, and you HAVE to have at least one meal (if not all) at the Chisolm Grill http://www.chisholmgrill.com/ (also on the Square)

I've been to Fossil Rim several times! Its fun but you will be putting your car at a bit of a risk (get insurance if you're renting!) because you drive down a dirt road and the animals WILL stick their head in your car unless you roll up the windows. Its pretty cool tho cuz you can buy some food and the animals will lick it right out of your hand...plus they have a nice restaurant at the top of the hill...Its pretty fun.

I live in denton which is about 2 hours northish of where Scarby is...I've been to pretty much any touristy thing in the DFW area so if you've got any other questions...I'll let you know about anything i hear about going on that weekend if you'd like.

My mother-in-law lives in Lake Dallas (isn't that close to Denton?) - anyway it only took an hour to get to Scarby - was I driving my carriage too fast ?

Another good place for shopping and entertainment is the Dallas West End Historic District (http://www.dallaswestend.org/).

Another something Historic to do is visiting the Fort Worth Stockyards National Historic District (http://www.fortworthstockyards.org/) and then taking a ride on the Vintage Steam Train (https://www.grapevinetexasusa.com/ThingsToDo/GrapevineVintageRailroad/tabid/267/Default.aspx) between the Stockyard Station and Grapevine, TX.

Also, for dining in Waxahachie, you might try the College Street Pub (http://www.collegestreetpub.com/).  A group of folks ate there on Friday or Saturday evening on the weekend I drove up to Scarby in 2004.  Can't remember exactly what I had, but I know it was good.  ;D

2 hours is kind of a generalization its prolly more like 1hour 45 min...Denton is about 15 minutes north of Lake Dallas...I guess most of my rides have driven slow...haha...

Thanks for the input.  I'll start getting tourist info from the places mentioned, and if anyone has more, please jump in, because since it's so early, of course, we won't decide what to do until it gets closer, but I want to get the information pulled together so when we are ready to decide, I'll have all the info at my fingertips.

We have been to Excalibur in Las Vegas, and there is a Medieval Times just outside of Chicago, so that probably won't be a place we'll visit, but we love animals, so the fossil rim and the both zoos sound great -although, never thought of what driving on a safari could do to a rental car!

I've always wanted to go to Texas since I was a little girl, and so I'm really looking forward to visiting the state as well as going to RenDezvous.

I forgot to ask this.  How far is San Antonio from the Scarborough area?  I've always also wanted to ride a boat on the Riverwalk, and since we're getting there on Wednesday afternoon, we have 2 full days until we want to be back to our hotel on Friday for the Rendezvous activities.  We fly into Dallas, so is it feasible to get in the rental car that afternoon and drive to San Antonio and spend a couple of days there?  Thanks.

Scarby is really only about an hour from Denton, Ariel.  :-* Poor girl, whoever was driving you is slow!  :P

You're in luck, because you'll be an hour away from a lot to do in both Dallas and Ft Worth. You'll be about 4 hours away from Austin and about 5 hours away from San Antonio though. There is a lot of fun stuff to do between and there if you are wanting to head South. I'm not sure if ya'll are wanting to put that much mileage in a couple days before spending all weekend at faire though.

I loved Fossil Rim the two times I went as a kid, there is a lot to explore and see, and if you can, take one of their rides through the park so that they can tell you all about the animals and in some areas, you get to feed them.

I don't know much about Dallas but, I was raised in the Fort Worth area.
Something you will definitely want to check out is the Historical Stockyards, there is shopping, food, and a lot of historical little tidbits down in the area, with museums and a train ride that can take you down to Grapevine and back (can't remember exactly where it will take you or the cost.) My out-of-state family really enjoys going down to the stockyards when they're visiting.

From the Stockyards, since you're close, I'd also say just take Main Street down to Downtown Fort Worth. There is a lot to see and do, shopping and different restaurants in Sundance Square. On most nights there is live music and sometimes events including concerts, there are a couple comedy clubs in the area, and I've heard the Flying Saucer is a great place to stop and have a beer at. There is a movie theatre and also the Bass Performance Hall, which if you don't catch a show, at least go and walk around outside and try and step inside if you can. Its a beautiful building, both from the inside and the out.

I hope this helps, I'm going to poke around and try and find some other stuff for you! And if you want, if you stay in the DFW area before faire, let me know what you guys are up to. if I'm not working one of those nights, I'd love to come down from Denton and meet ya'll for dinner pre-faire!  :)

Downtown San Antonio is really fun to visit, with the Riverwalk, the Alamo, and the tour of the old Spanish Missions.  But as Megan said, it's at least a 5 hour drive, if you stop for ~30 minutes total for meals & fuel.  I just had Google Earth calculate the route from the DFW Airport Northern Parking / Car Rental Lot, to the Holiday Inn on the San Antonio Riverwalk, and the distance is 291 miles.

Just for fun, I also had Google Earth calculate what looks like the longest "straight" drive in Texas, starting from the DFW Airport.  It's 651 miles taking I-20 down to I-10 and on to the TX-NM border on I-10.

The longest drive in Texas appears to be from the North-West corner (where US-87 enters TX), to the southern tip (Boca Chica Blvd / TX-4 E) at a beach east of Brownsville on the Gulf of Mexico.  The distance is 937 miles.

You could always change your flight to one week earlier, and then you'd have plenty of time for sight-seeing!   ;)   ;D

After a long flight from Chicago to Minneapolis to Dallas, I don't think we'll want to get in a car and drive to San Antonio for 5 hours.  Thanks for the geography lesson, I didn't realize it was that far!  I think we'll stay in the Dallas area.

And eloquent, as it gets closer, we can make dinner plans, because we'll probably be there Wednesday and Thursday nights, since I don't think we'll drive too far away.  And anyone else who is in the area, it would be fun to get together before RenDezvous.   ;D

If you'd be interested in something that might bring flashbacks to your youth, try visiting the Fort Worth Water Gardens (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_Worth_Water_Gardens) in downtown Fort Worth, where part of the 1976 movie Logan's Run (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logan's_Run_(1976_film)) was filmed.

Google Maps Aerial Photo - Fort Worth Water Gardens (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&sll=32.747602,-97.325582&sspn=0.001877,0.003431&ie=UTF8&radius=0.1&rq=1&ev=zi&ll=32.747602,-97.326121&spn=0.001877,0.00453&t=h&z=19)

Driving across Texas from Orange (on the LA border) to El Paso is 856 miles.  Driving across three states from El Paso, TX to San Diego, CA is only 726 miles.    :o   ;)   ;D

Two things I do with all visitors - the Stockyards in Fort Worth. Downtown Fort Worth is also a great walk-around-shop-and-look-at-stuff place. The other is the JFK Grassy Knoll & 6th Floor Museum. Downtown Dallas in the West End is great for walk-around etc but I prefer Fort Worth. I plan on taking a few days off around Rendezvous so if you're interested in a pre-Rendezvous meet & greet, I'd be willing to bet we could set one up and meet for lunch and be touristy.

If you choose to do the JFK thing, you wouldn't be far from the Dallas World Aquarium (http://"http://www.dwazoo.com/d/node/7").  It's a really nice indoors place with more than just fish.  It has a cool 3 story jungle to explore from underwater up to the top of the canopy.  Lots of animals including sharks, crocs, penguins and even jaguars.  It used to be pretty inexpensive place to frequent, but with all the additions they seem to have just about tripled the admission costs in the last 5 years.  I think it's around $20 for adults, now.

Dallas Zoo (http://"http://www.dallaszoo.com/") is great, too.

Also in Dallas:

If you're up for something completely different during the evenings and like swing dancing or live jazz and blue music, you could check out the historic Sons of Herman Hall (http://"http://www.sonsofhermann.com/sohh_menu.htm") near Deep Ellum.  Wednesday nights are swing dancing.  Live music throughout the week.  Have to check their calendar.

If you like mundane shopping, the Galleria Mall is the top end as far as malls here go and has ice skating year round.  It may sound strange, but the geeks in us like to visit the Frye's Electronic Stores everywhere we travel to see what themes they use.  Don't ask.  Garland's is a ranch theme, of course.  :)

To me, Medieval Times is just getting ridiculous on their pricing.  We used to go to the one near Anaheim, CA, which cost us around $30 a person.  The last time we visited the one here in Dallas it was just about double! And, I'm not sure I liked the show as much.  Best find coupons for that one, if you try it.

Well, that's all I could think of.

I wouldn't suggest Southfork, it is kind of out of the way in relation to other sights around Dallas, What you see on TV, is just what you see there (a big ranch house up a long driveway).  However you might consider touring the new Cowboy Stadium in Arlington, it's half way between Dallas and Fort Worth. It's size and grandure is beyond comprehension.

Fossil Rim is pretty neat. Here are a few shots of what you might see at the park.

Everything sounds so wonderful!  I hope we can cram as much as we can in the 2 1/2 days before RenDezvous starts.  I love the pictures of the animals.  And I think Southfork is a no-go, especially after the comments here.  I mentioned it to Steve about going there, and in a serious voice he said, "You're kidding, right?"

Coming from one who moved up to MN from the North Dallas area I would suggest the 6th Floor & Dealy Plaza, The West End Shopping area you can walk there easily from Dealy Plaza(or at least you could) Check out the veiw from Reunion Tower if its a good day you can see the skyline of Fort Worth, also in walking distance from the two places mentioned above.

The Dallas Musuem of Art also in Downtown(I do believe it was free last time I was there), also Fair Park if you make it there at the right time of the month they have a huge flea market plus you can also check out The Science Place, The Nature Muesem, THe Railroad Muesuem(I recall seeing Bonnie & Clyde's shot up car there). Besides The Texas Star is also in Fair Park, you can't help but see that ;D.

Ohh fun resturant, The Magic Time Machine in Addison, not so much a show as Medieval Times but still a blast. The one time I was there I we had Batman & Robin as our servers.

Southfork...no bueno

San Antonio... 250 miles (about 4 hours) -- Definitely a must do some time in your life.

Fossil Rim http://www.fossilrim.com/ (http://www.fossilrim.com/)is a neat place...especially if you are bringing kidos... April is a good time because it's so hot that the animals are all resting and hiding in shade. However... it is highly likely that your car may show evidence of being there afterward. We have had rear view mirrors bitten (scratched)..things like that.

I live in the Ft. Worth area and I really would recommend this area over Dallas. It's much safer...much easier... nicer... pretty much a better bet. If you go to Sundance Square in Ft. Worth... you can find lots to do.

http://www.eightobar.com/ (http://www.eightobar.com/) 8.0's is a great place for light foods ...usually has a band too (no cover charge)
http://www.delfriscos.com/ (http://www.delfriscos.com/) For formal dining and the best steak in Texas... runs about $75 each
http://www.fourdayweekend.com/ (http://www.fourdayweekend.com/) 4 Day Weekend is an improve comedy team... very funny and cheap.
For beers: http://www.beerknurd.com/stores/fortworth (http://www.beerknurd.com/stores/fortworth) This is a pub with 100's of beers (don't try to drink them all)
http://www.petesduelingpianobar.com/ (http://www.petesduelingpianobar.com/) This place is a BLAST !

The great thing about Sundance Square is you can park and walk to all these great things...only a few blocks apart.

PM me if you want anymore information... but unless you just want to see Dallas... Ft. Worth is much nicer.

Other places in Fort Worth of course include the Stockyards with Billy Bobs, Cattlemens Steak House, Booger Reds Saloon and the Star Cafe.  Also in Downtown there is a favorite of mine Billy Miners, Drinks and Hamburgers.

Yeah like Merlin, I am a Ft. Worth kid.

Even though there is plenty to do in Fort Worth, saying its much nicer and its safer is a bit of an insult to Dallas.
I'm downtown in Dallas almost weekly without trouble, but like both cities, as long as you know where not to go, you'll be alright.

If you're into art, there is a lot of incredible options in both cities.

Ok, the romantic side of me is coming to forefront.  I have dreamed about going on a boat on the riverwalk in San Antonio for many, many years.  Here's what I've dreamed up.  I need you good folks to tell me if this is do-able.

We arrive on Wednesday before the RenDezvous in Dallas Ft. Worth Airport at 3 pm.  I thought about picking up the car and driving to San Antonio (or somewhere on the way close to it) and then spend the night there.  Go on the boat ride either Wednesday night if we get there & it's not too late or else during the day on Thursday.  Spend Thursday there and drive back to Fort Worth in the evening and spend the night either in Ft. Worth (or somewhere close to it).

Then on Friday morning go to the Ft. Worth zoo, because we love animals and going to different zoos.  Then leave there in enough time to check into the Super 8 in time for the beginning RenDezvous festivities.

Is it do-able?  Will we spend most of our vacation sitting in a car?  Is it worth it?  Thanks for the input.   ;D

Okay from DFW Airport to San Antonio Texas is about 295 miles and 5 hours driving time.  It is doable but yeah your gonna spend lots of seat time in a car.  But as for me I would say it is worth the effort if it is your first visit to Texas.  I havent been to the FW zoo in several years but it is an enjoyable outing.  So I say go for it.  You only live once.  ;D

For Dallas there is:
The Dallas Museum of Art-www.dm-art.org/
The Trammell & Margaret Crow Collection of Asian Art- http://www.crowcollection.com/

For Fort Worth:
Kimbell Art Museum: www.kimbellart.org
Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth: www.themodern.org

Murder in Dallas:   2.4 times the national average
Murder in Ft Worth: 1.2 times the national ave

Robbery in Dallas:    2.9 times the national ave
Robbery in Ft. Worth:   1.1 times the national ave

Arson in Dallas:   3.5 times the national ave
Arson in Ft. Worth:  1.4 times the national ave

Violent crimes in Dallas last year: 16,845
Violent crimes in Ft Worth last year: 3,751

I didn't mean to insult Dallas.... but these are the facts.

Yes, they are the facts, and I understand it. But slamming facts in my face is not the topic of this thread, its to give Lady Renee ideas and give helpful suggestions about her stay in Texas.

ON TOPIC: Renee- with what you want to do, you're going to spend a lot of time in a car.

Pros: There is a lot of land to see between Fort Worth and San Antonio, you'll drive through Waco, will have lots of options for good Texas BBQ along the way, will pass through Austin and have the option to stop by the capital building, and then make it down to San Antonio to see the Riverwalk, even have the chance to see the Alamo while you are down to. If you and your husband like traveling by car, then this could very much be an enjoyable jaunt across our state!

Cons: That's a lot of jet lag and travel time and I would be afraid of getting really tired after spending so much time en route to Texas and then to San Antonio AND then all the way back to the metroplex. I know I'd be pretty tired and going into two full days of faire + after hours, full of friends and events and such.

I bow to the knowledge and suggestions of my friends.  I think we'll stay in the Dallas Ft. Worth area.  We want to be rested for a fun weekend of faire!

Thank you!   ;D

Yep LOTS of seatbelt time to do all of that travelin, believe me there will be more than PLENTY in the DFW area. That being said, I'm taking two weeks to try to see and catch up with everybody - in Denton, Dallas, Austin and Houston... I'll be pressed to try to do everything. But it'll be a BLAST tryin'!  ;D

I wasn't slamming anything in your face....just wasn't sure if you were aware since you seemed offended that I disrespected the town of Dallas. Letting an out-of-towner have some facts about a place they intend to visit was my intention. I am so very sorry that you seem upset that I did that. Please accept my humble apology for giving what I consider to be helpful information to her.

Pork? Chicken? Which reminds me, if you like Italian food, I've got a recommendation for food at faire if you don't eat meat at all.

HEH, this is info that I may need. You see, I am a vegetarian now, and since most of what I know about Scarby consists of the worn down path from the Wine and Alchemy stage to the pub, a point in the "non-meat" direction would be greatly appreciated LOL!

Victors almost always has a vegetarian item on the menu.  If you're not vegan, you can also do the quiche at Victor's French booth.  You can get wraps without meat in them as well.  Stuffed potatoes with broccoli and cheese are good.  I believe you can also get meatless stir fry, but it will have been cooked on the same grill that they do the regular stir fry on, I think.

For snacks, there are the fruit vendors, corn on the cob, french fries, peasant bread (sweet or savoury), cheese bread (le yum!), and deep fried veggies.

It's harder if you're vegan, as a lot of the vegetarian foods have cheese or eggs in them, but I'll check around with a couple of vegan friends and see what options they've found.

I'm sure that there are other veggie-friendly food items out there.

I eat pork sparingly, and I love chicken.  Just not a big fan of red meat.  I live next to Iowa, whose motto is "Iowa corn-fed beef," so I get a lot of flak from the people I work with, but I don't have this "thing" about eating animals, I just don't like the taste of red meat.  I know I'll find lots of delicious food on our vacation, and I can always accompany blue to eat vegetarian, of which I also eat a lot of.

That is so cool!  We are big Munsters/Addam's Family fans.  I checked out their website at: http://www.munstermansion.com/NewSite/index.php (http://www.munstermansion.com/NewSite/index.php).  But, it says it's only open in October.  :(

I brought this one up earlier and I'm going to second the queen here. This is a cool place. The fish is incredible, the prices are good and it has been featured on the food network as one of the top seafood places to eat and on the travel channel as one of the best "haunted" places to eat. We haven't had any paranormal experiences there, but a friend says she felt something cold brush her cheek while she was in the ladies room! Dinner and a haunting....

Wildthingjew - there are 2 other Texas de Brazil locations in the DFW area. One on Cedar Springs Road is much closer to Love Field. Their website is here: Texas de Brazil (http://www.texasdebrazil.com/).

There are 2 other restaurants that I know of that are a similar concept -

Boi Na Braza (http://www.boinabraza.com/)
Fogo de Chao (http://www.fogodechao.com/)

We like our meat in Texas! :)

Absolutely!...It's only about 15 minutes from the airport in beautiful downtown Ft. Worth.... get a cup of lobster bisque and forgo the rest of the salad bar to save room for all the meat.
Scour the internet for a coupon if you can find one because it is pricey but there seems to be 50% coupons around at times.

While Fort Worth is a beautiful city, please do NOT let some of the comments that have been posted here scare you away from touring the many options of activities in Dallas too.  The occupants of the two cities tend to be very territorial and playing Diss The Other Half Of The Metroplex is a local past-time.

Just sayin'...

I want to drop in the Pocket Sandwich theater.  They have shows running Thursday through Sunday night.  During Rendevous they are doing Sherlock holmes.  I know that we have stuff going on but it is an option.

As for food, it depends on what you want.  There are a lot of great smaller chains and mom and pop places here in dallas.  Depending on where your staying, there may be some nearby.  I know the rogue and I want to try "Barb-B-Cutie" up in Allen.

Thanks.
In case this has not been answered yet, Austin is about 3-4 hours from dallas and San Antonio is another 1 1/2 hrs further south from there.
If you want to do the Riverwalk & San Antonio that is a whole weekend in itself.
Google San Antonio Mission Trail.
Stay in a bed & breakfast in the King George historic district. Visit the Alamo and the riverwalk;
drive the mission trail; ride a horse drawn carriage for the city tour.
Eat Mexican food in the Mercado district and take the haunted San Antonio night tour.

There is also a wine/beer tasting bar in the Stockyards Station.
You can ride the vintage train between the Stockyards and Grapevine.
Lots of wineries off main street in Grapevine.
