Ok ya'll, Scarborough isn't having The Rogues for the 2010 season. I am NOT happy about this & have registered (nicely) my protest of the situation. Make your thoughts known too (nicely please) http://tinyurl.com/scarbyx and REPOST the information so we can get the word out!
Also, if anyone knows of faires or festivals in the late winter & spring that they might try to get gigs with, please post the info.
Do we know the reasoning? Who made the decision - the band or the Faire? Might make a difference as to how we (politely) word any requests.
Capt Marga
The Midland Celtic Festival here where Clandestine played last year. Not sure how much they pay though.
DH & I just screamed 'NOOOOO'! They are one of our main reasons to go to Scarborough every year. I will NOT be happy if they are not there.
Marga- Faire made the decision, not the band. Randy emailed me to tell me they had not been asked back for the 2010 season, and to ask about any festivals that they might be able to get into around that time.
DH thinks he may know of some places in Ft. Worth to check into for them. We'll look around West Texas and see what we can find.
[opinion]I'm rather surprised that this has happened, but not shocked. Ever since they moved The Rogues to their current stage, I don't know how well attended their shows are. They just don't have the exposure they used to have. I figure that Scarby Mgnt moved them there to bring more traffic to the shops along that lane, but the stage is completely closed off and unless you know what you're looking for, you can easily miss them. Yes there is signage, but it's not as effective as seeing four sets of bonny knees as you walk over the bridge. I wonder if there are people who have stated in the last few years, "You know, we HEARD the bagpipes, but we couldn't figure out where they were coming from."
It's a shame, and a mistake. Maybe Scarby Mgnt feels they need new blood injected into the music at Scarby. Fine, hire a different band. Heck I could name one right off the top of my head which would not be a bad choice. But there is nothing saying that there isn't room for two pipe bands at Scarby. While it's not a *huge* faire, there are very definate ends of the faire, and a pipe band at either end would not hurt.[/opinion]
*...gets off soapbox...*
I can not believe that they will not be their next year. I will send a msg now! They are one of the best band at Faire.
This is sad news indeed! I hated that far away stage. No bagpipes at faire is unthinkable!
Sherwood Forrest- near me is opening next year- East of Austin. End of Feb- April first weekend. Wonderous if the lads could play there!
Hi everybody,
I would just like to clarify the issue about The Rogues. The process of booking the Festival begins in September, since the deadline for proposals is September 1. The process of budgets, contracts, etc. runs through September and October, and contracts are executed as quickly as possible so that performers know what their booking calendar will look like in the spring.
We try and wrap up everything in early November, since the Holidays hit at the end of November and December, and if we finalize contracts in January it provides less time (just about 3 months) for acts to arrange bookings and travel.
Unfortunately, we were not aware the Rogues would be available for next season until last Thursday, November 12, and the 2010 show booking was all but complete.
We do hope this year's lineup of entertainment will allow you to enjoy the season.

The Rogues are a sad loss :(
I also heard the Knights of Noble Cause are also not returning :( Double sad pockets.

Dang....that's just sad.
Well changes happen, I still miss the Freelancers but hey at least they have a replacement for the Joust already. I will miss the Rouges though.
And RenDezvous will be our first trip to Scarby. We were looking forward to seeing the Rogues, as we heard so many good things about them, and Felix Bubbleworthy sent us a CD that we enjoy. I sure hope there will lots of musical entertainment. That is the biggest reason we go to faire.

As sad as I am to see them not return to faire this season, we still have a lot of wonderful music groups.
I would highly recommend Queen Anne's Lace, Hey Nunnie Nunnie!, Iris and Rose, Sarah Mullen, and Wine and Alchemy.
Donal Hinely, Jim Hancock, and Cantiga are all wonderful too.
and my personal favorite. Cast in Bronze.
For comedy... MOTLEY PLAYERS III
Ohhhh yeaaaa!
The Rogues are not playing!!??? Hate to hear that. Any idea who they are getting for pipes and drums?? Might as well cancel the season without pipes and drums!
SCARBOROUGH FAIR WILL NEVER BE THE SAME WITH OUT THE ROUGES!!! :o

Amen. Perhaps a miracle shall occur.
You'll all just have to make the trip to MD Faire to see them there. It is only about 1500 miles ... I think they are well worth the trip.
Don't forget this isn't the first time in recent years that Scarby didn't have the Rogues. In 2004(or was it 05) we had Scottish Mayhem (albeit most of the members were at one time or another with the Rogues).

Scottish Mayhem was made up entirely of former Rogues members, (Jimmy Mitchell, Lars Sloan, and Bryan Blaylock) and was formed, to honor the memory of Jeff (Mayhem)Thompson, who was killed December 8, 2004 at the Alrosa Villa, when the gunman also killed D/FW native Dimebag Darrell Abbott. Mayhem worked security and was the 'tax collector' for The Rogues at Scarborough and other Texas events for many years. Scottish Mayhem played the inaugural season of the Ivanhoe stage, in 2006, and The Rogues returned in 2007.
Rogues fans who are willing to make the trip to Norman, the weekend before Scarby opens (yes, I know it's the same weekend as the FOF preview, but it seems to me that's usually on Sunday, so a trip to Norman for Saturday at a FREE festival to see The Rogues could be doable.
We're considering making our first visit to the Norman Faire...I hear it is great
Can you keep a secret?
The "Original" Rogues, Jimmy Mitchell, Lars Sloan, and Bryan Blaylock, will be performing at Scarborough on Highland Fling Weekend.

The new band is called SLOANWOLFE. Lars Sloan, Jimmy Mitchell, Bryan Blaylock, Mark Sullivan and Ernie Gallegos. New cd coming out to coincide with Scarby. We will be there April 24th and 25th!
A rose by any other name.......
Actually, friends from Minnesota went to Scarby last year and when they heard we were going to RenDezvous told us definitely not to miss The Rogues. I was sorry to find out they weren't playing there this year, but your news has made me very happy. Looking forward to seeing your shows!
SLOANWOLFE is only one weekend??

They were only one weekend in 2010, my understanding is that they are doing the full run of 2011

There will indeed be a full season of bagpipes. All of our entertainers will be full season contracts this year with the exception of the rotating acts that are sharing the Crown Stage with Don Juan and Miguel.
Sir Berit of Miller
Yay bagpipes. I really missed bagpipes last year!!
woo hoo! (falls down while trying to dance a jig)
