I picked up a book for my 8 YO grandson, called Hamster Princess: Harriet the Invincible, by Ursula Vernon. That is the real name of T. Kingfisher, whom I referenced earlier, but she uses her real name for her kids' books. It was silly and fun; a takeoff of Sleeping Beauty. I don't know if my grandson will like it, but I enjoyed it. And it's first in a series of 6, so I may be set for a while, lol

A cousin of mine lives in Philadelphia, and has invited me to visit so we can go to that faire. She and her family have a great time there. Her husband is a Scot from England, and she says he doesn't understand the fascination Americans have with renaissance faires. She says he walks around the place with a kind of bemused look on his face the whole time they're there. I would go just to see that :)

Quote from: anne of oaktower on March 23, 2009, 04:04:53 PMGreetings, All.  I have asked our kind host, John, to sticky this topic so that it will always appear at the top of our thread list.  Anyone having photos to share can either add them in a post or send me the link and I'll add it here in the first post.  I thought this might be a little easier than scrolling through page after page of posts, trying to find the pictures everyone has taken.

Go ahead...give us your best shots  ;)

Dusting off another forum thread. Here is a link to an album of my first time ever going to a renaissance festival. I first went in 2007, to Pittsburgh, after being told about ren faires by Professor M; he and I worked together at Carnegie Science Center.

I took my four year old son with me, and I had no idea how much walking through those gates would change my life.

I thought these photos were lost forever, I couldn't find them anywhere. Then I started going through very old emails to free up space, and I found them!

My first time ever at a faire.

Quote from: Laird Fraser of Lovatt on August 16, 2019, 06:13:49 AMI went to the very first Ren Faire in Pittsburgh...it must've been 1985 or 86, when it was held down in Oakland, in Schenley Park...at the base of "The Hill" if I remember correctly.

God...now i feel old.... :(

The Pittsburgh faire started in 1993, somewhere in Butler County from what I have been told. By 1999, it was at its present location. The Internet Archive has the old web site preserved.

I first went in 2007, introduced to the whole ren faire thing by Doctor M, later Professor M.

Sherwood Forest Faire / Re: SWFF Official Countdown

Someone message me when the countdown for the '26 seasons starts. Plan on trying to get down for a weekend or two. For those who don't know, I moved back to Alaska with the family a few years ago and have been settling in ever since. I work graveyards at the hospital, so my life is pretty much split between the ER, kids, and occasionally sleep, but I miss all of you nutters :D

Even though it may be some time before I'm able to come back down to Texas, I will be interested to see whether the new owners of TRF take it back to the magic it had in the late 80s into the 90s when I first started going. Be nice if it got a second wind. Sherwood is still primary for me, but I'd be willing to give TRF a chance again. UBER busy up here in Alaska working on getting land and perma-homes for me and the girls, so it may be a few years yet.
