I opted not to this year.  I have a paid membership, but changed my mind.

Maybe next year when it is not in July 4th weekend?
Maybe CON can get some more famous guests lime MarsCON and ValleyCON do?
Maybe their 6-figure bank account can knock memberships down some?  I mean really?  $55-$80?

Had a great idea for a new steampunk character, but just haven't had the time to work out some details. Maybe next year...

There's some potential for interesting debates in the programming at CONvergence this year. There's a couple ghost hunter panels and a presentation by the new editor of the TAPS Paranormal magazine http://www.tapsparamag.com/ and on the other side the Skepchicks are going to be back http://skepchick.org/blog/about-2/ ...

Went to Minicon this year for the first time since they down scaled it and was pretty unimpressed, it has become just too small to have enough variety in panels and things to keep the wife and I interested. Haven't made it to Marscon yet, we usually have 4 indoor shows in 6 weeks in Feb/Mar so there's too much else going on.

Another reason why I am not likely to return.  I am sick to death of the "I cannot control my inner wh0re" room.  How does that apply to SciFi, except that the guy who assigns the party rooms runs it?  HOW?  And why do they keep trying to recruit people to cheat?  Serious.  If you are so emotionally damaged that one mate cannot satisfy you, you need to remove yourself from the dating pool until you get your mommy & daddy issues resolved and then EARN a quality partner.

I've never quite understood how they applied to Scifi/fantasy fandom either. -I can certainly understand discussing various flavors of sexuality as they fit within SciFi/Fantasy literature and media, but they seemed more like a mini "Pride" event and less relevant to the Con than most other parties.

Robert Schug is in charge of the parties this year.
