Tom lost his job this morning and is now unemployed, I am at a loss and trying to wrap my head around this. It would not be so bad but I cant work due to my back so I'm going to try and help him find a job. If any of you know of any Network admin. jobs please let me or Tom know. We would really like to stay in MN if at all possible.

I am so sorry for you.
I can only imagine how stressful it is.
Although I don't know of any openings I will keep my ears to the ground for you.
My only suggestion is that he not pigeon hole himself and be ready to take whatever comes along for the time being
Lots of hugs and love out to you both.

While I'm sorry to hear of this development, I am encouraged in that Tom is an experienced Network Administrator and there is some good hiring activity and prospects in the IT realm.

I will share with you what has worked for me after I was laid off from 3M after 22 years with the company and relocated to North Carolina from Austin, TX a little over a year ago.

1st things 1st, he should get right onto bringing his resume' to current. Also, he should begin reading up on interviewing and practice whereever/whenever possible. These traditionally haven't been my favorite activity - but in "eating my vegetables 1st", I've become much more comfortable/successful in doing them.

My experience is that on-line isn't the best way to go about landing a new job. Networking is, he should leverage his contacts that he does have that work in IT. If ya'll go to church, it's a natural networking spot. Faire is also good for this. Anywhere y'all have common interests with other folks is the general idea.

I would recommend going to contract agencies (Modis, Adecco, Robert-Half, Manpower, etc.). I'm not sure how close you are to larger cities in Minnesota, but if it's reasonable he should print up his resume' and GO in person. On'line submissions (even on-line profiles at contract agencies - believe it or not) tend to go into the "black hole of Calcutta). I had my best results by putting on a tie and slacks/ printing my resume on resume' paper,  and going into the agencies and asking to speak with a recruiter. This does several things -- he gets a free critique of his resume', it builds a repoire with someone who can help, and sets him apart from all of the online submissions that they do't have time to read/consider anyway.

I wish Tom the best in his search.

He and I both thank everyone for the well wishes. He is filing for unemployment as we speak, so we can have some money coming in. Thank God he had alot of vacation time banked that they had to pay him so we will be OK for at least 2 months, we will use that for the bills and stuff. He is looking at 2 jobs one in New Hope and the other in Faribault and plans on applying to them today once he is done with the paper work for unemployment. I just hope he can get a job soon as we need health insurance due the medical problems that I have, the meds I'm on are a killer on pocket book.

I know what kind of stress that is like. God has been good to my family, and He will be good to yours too. It's all in his time, and just when you think you can't take no more, good things start happening. Easier said than done, I know, but your family will be on my prayer list.

I'm praying for you both, and wishing you the very best of luck in all your endeavors...

(((HUGE HUGS))) Honey!  It sucks to be in this position, I know it all too well.  =(  My husband was laid off from his union for 2 years before working for just over a year and getting laid off again.  He would have been laid off for AT LEAST 4 years if he stayed within his union to wait for work.  He didn't.  Now he has a new job so we're moving to Duluth.  A great site to check out is Indeed.com.  Best of luck!

Thank you everyone for the prayers, good thoughts, hugs, sending a number for a recruiter, and also websites. He has been putting out his resume but no bits as of yet, we just keep on hoping and praying. There is one that he would like if we need to move and that is in Washington DC, working at the Library of Congress. So if you could please keep the thoughts, and prayers coming, our thoughts and prayers go out to all. Again a big heart felt Thank You to you all. Serena & Tom

Serena, I'm just now seeing this. I can't help with the job search, but I can certainly keep you both in my thoughts and prayers. Try to look at this as an opportunity for something better to come into your lives. You are two very nice people and I wish you the best of luck and health in the very near future!
