China doesn't hold the exclusive on not caring, but I also think you generalize too much in your assessment. Similar laws have caused similar problems in other countries, including the U.S.

Sad but true.   Now that China is getting a taste of capitalism, they will need to go through the same growing pains as the rest of us.

Sure looks that way.  The news said that a chimp and orangutan stayed in their cages (which I assume were also open)-smart primates.

Edit:  Police are now saying he opened the cages then killed himself.

Police Warn Of Gummi Bears Soaked In Alcohol

OMAHA, Neb. -- Local law enforcement officials are warning parents about the dangers of kids getting their hands on gummi bears soaked in alcohol.

"Kids are just taking gummi bears and putting alcohol in them and eating them, and they can take them into football games or school in little baggies and they look just like candy," said Joan McVoy, public education specialist for the Nebraska Regional Poison Center.

Known as "boozy bears," these pieces of candy could create serious medical issues like alcohol overdose poisoning, poison control officials said.

"It tastes good -- it's just candy -- it tastes good, and they keep doing it, and then we have an overdose alcohol poisoning; that's our biggest concern for our kids," Bellevue Police Department Capt. Herb Evers said.

Evers said the issue goes beyond the danger to teens and extends to small children.

"That 2- or 3-year-old who is walking, or at least pulling themselves up on couches and tables, getting into that candy -- how quick could we cause a death of a 2- or 3-year-old with just a little bit of alcohol," Evers said.

The really sad part of this is that a bunch of endangered animals were killed (I believe the news this morning said 18 tigers!).  The police called for people (from zoos and such) with tranq guns, but by the time they arrived decided it was too dark out and didn't give them a chance to do their job and just shot the critters.

Zimbabwean man claims prostitute turned to donkey

A Zimbabwean man has told a court that he hired a prostitute who during the night transformed into a donkey, and that he is now "seriously in love" with the animal, state media said Wednesday.

"I think I am also a donkey. I do not know what happened when I left the bar, but I am seriously in love with (the) donkey," Sunday Moyo told the court, according to The Herald newspaper.

Moyo, 28, was arrested in the town of Zvishavane, about 300 kilometres (185 miles) south of the capital Harare on Sunday.

He said he had paid $25 for a prostitute, and was surprised Sunday morning when he heard people accusing him of having sex with a donkey.

Moyo has been charged with bestiality. The court has ordered him to undergo a mental examination, The Herald said.
