Has anyone heard about this?

http://www.frozennorthmn.com/

Looks like it could be fun (well after I get done with the blood thinners)...
I might go watch them.

This sounds just like Darkon, which I posted about in Squires TAvern. I don't know if it'd be my thing, I don't care much about battles and what not, but it is definitely cool!
Masquerading as a normal person day after day is exhausting.

Is it kind of a battle thing for people who don't like the SCA?

It looks a little like Amtgard but is different...

Interesting, and yet, a little scary at the same time.

Yeah looks like SCA for non-SCA'ers.  We have a group up here that calls themselves Belegarth - pretty much the same thing from what I gather.
It's always time for Chardonnay!

Lord Figaro

I noticed there was a link to the Belegarth site on that one too.

Yeah it looks like there are two groups. One uses red weapons and one blue.

http://www.geddon.org/index.php/Category:Realms This link tells about the realms (chapters).

For those who have been to WiRF, this is alot like what the Knights in combat were doing. I would like to go watch them sometime.

I thought I might be able to shed some light on this as a member of the group.

The comment SCA for non-SCAers is accurate in some sense.  We do have intense full-contact combat, but unlike SCA choose to pad our weapons rather than ourselves. We also don't amass the impressive collection of bruises that SCA fighters do, and are less stringent on historical accuracy.

The idea that there are two different types of fighters is misguided, but I could see how it would look that way if you haven't taken a look at the rules.  The size of the weapon determines it's color class and the type of damage that it can do.  Blue are small slashing weapons, Red are large slashing weapons (capable of destroying shields), Green are thrusting/piercing weapons and yellow refers to most projectiles.  You can use any type of weapon or combination you can think of with a few exceptions for the sake of safety. No entangling weapons (whips, nets, lassos) no unmanned weapons (traps) no punching weapons.

I am part of the Minneapolis, Minnesota group mentioned in the first post. We are a very open group who tries hard to avoid all Drama Llama BS.

We love new fighters and maintain a community arsenal for anyone who wants to come out and try.

We practice on Sundays at 2pm in Van Cleve Park. Visit frozennorthmn.net for more information or to join our forums (site is being overhauled and as such is a bit sparse).

More information about the sport can be found at dagorhir.com or belegarth.com including maps and lists of realms in all areas of the country.

We wanted to do strolling or arena battles at the MN Ren Fest this year but were turned down. (For reasons involving liability as I understand it)

Drama Llama . . .nice, I am going to use that.

Something that might be worth suggesting to try is to offer to do it in the new special events area just outside the fence by "B gate" where they had the special events and vendors for the Scottish Weekend.

They also might require your group to have liability insurance to protect the general public. For example, all of us booth owners have to have a million dollars in liability insurance to protect us, and the festival in case a customer trips and gets hurt while in our booth. Some of the performers who throw around sharp, pointy or flaming objects have to have similar coverage.

Thanks for the suggestion.  The trouble is that we don't have the money for liability coverage.  I get why it's important, but as we don't charge anyone to fight with us or sell anything we just don't have the money for it.

We've looked into getting coverage but have either been laughed at when we explain what we do or been quoted a price involving a few thousand dollars when our group treasury is right around $100 at the moment.
