We have our FOF passes and have decided that we will likely come to the picnic, although if gas is $10 per gallon by then we might now!!! I hope these gas prices slow their climb a bit! It's terrible. We plan on going at least 6 weekends this year and wish w had a magic carpet. We would love to meet and get to know some of you guys. We'll look forward to seeing you at the preview and if not there, see ya opening day!

Meh! What else is there to spend money on? We'll be there for Preview, then again the following week for opening. We're also attending opening at Sherwood, and planning to go to RenDezvous, with a possible trip to OkRF. Total of about 5000 miles. Hopefully, it won't rise too much from what it is now.  It's a little under $3 here in central Arkansas.

The gas in Texas is a different formulation. I get significantly better gas mileage with Texas gas.

Good point Merlin, what else IS there to spend money on!!?? We will likely be there for preview. Would love to get down to Sherwood, that's a maybe - it sounds like a fantastic faire. Give us a shout if you do go to OKRF and we might hook up the same weekend! We live in Ardmore (just moved up from Bowie, TX) and considered a trip to OKRF...it's been 7 years since I've been there. We'll look forward to meeting you somefaire.

I think we are going to take off work the Friday of Norman (two days before Scarby's preview). We went last year to Norman froze our...accessories off. Lots of vendors there and a good place to stock up on new accessories, garb, etc.

Looking forward to it, Ryk! We've met (face-to-face) and cyber-met a lot of good folks here on R/F since I joined last May—unfortunately a week or so after RenDezvous happened at our home faire! Ah, well...

The crack about what to spend money on was just for levity's sake. It's been hard on a lot of folks since the economy started diving for the toilet in 2007. I've a high-stress job and faire is my oasis. I'll give up a lot to go to faire.

Maybe this helps-maybe not. I'm just offering an alternative-

You get 2 free passes for first 2 weekends with the FOF, so that's 2 admissions covered.

If you buy the new weekend pass for $32, that's 2 more admissions. You are now 4 tickets for $32 outlay.

If you buy and additional weekend pass, for another $32, you now have 6 admissions, you get to be there everyday, she gets to come 6 times, and you are spending $64. Less than the old Season Pass.

Again, not preaching, just trying to help you out.

The free passes help but unfortunately they are only for the first two weekends, of which one is out for sure (Scarby could have at least lifted the restriction for FOF folks). Weekend passes don't help because she can only go for one day of the weekend - not both. This is why the season pass was perfect for her. Thanks for trying to help though. Appreciate it.

Just a note:  You do not have to use both halves of the weekend pass on the same weekend, per something that Orvis said on an earlier thread.  You may want to look into that before dismissing the option completely.

Yea... we are in the same boat.... would be nice if the free tickets could be used any weekend. Restricting them to only the first 2 does us no good since we will miss one of these weekends.
We are still debating on how we are going to do this season... probably just come out 2 weekends and get discounted tickets at Tom Thumb. Losing the season passes could save me a ton... we usually drop hundreds in the shops and I can eat A LOT.
Last year we attended every weekend except 1.... I bought boots..the daughter bought an entire outfit.. I bought another kilt...a belt... a pouch... e new wooden mug.. the wife bought a "cape"... we got 3 CD's ... let's see... gave each daughter $40 at the gates each day for food and tips for shows... Yea... I'm sure dropping the season passes is a good idea.

I have never been to the preview. The one other time I had a FOF pass I was unable to make it. I don't know if I will this year. I am only one I know with a pass. My husband got one for me but he is only coming a few time and will buy he ticks at the gate. I don't do so well on my own. I am shy and timid and don't know if i should come.
Do we come in garb??
Is it good to get there early??

Merlin the Elder

You really should come, BagPipeBabe.  I know about shy. In person, I'm not nearly as gregarious as I tend to be on the forum here... The truth be known, I'm a wallflower unless I know a few people, and Nimue is even more shy. Lady Kett and Doña Catalina were most kind to us last year...I think they picked up on the deer-caught-in-the-headlights that I'm sure we looked like.

The management, I think, prefers no on the garb.

What I find really nice about the day, it that it's real low-key, not hoards of people, and you get to see a quieter side of the shire. It seems almost nuts for us to make the trip down from Maumelle (central Arkansas) for an afternoon at the "nearly" faire, but this is going to be our third.

You don't have to get there real early, but then it might be a good time to make some new acquaintances. There was somewhat of a bottleneck the first year of the photo badges, if you didn't send in your photo, but I think they're getting smoother on that. You get to see the last dress rehearsal of the pre-cannon act, some jousting, food and other festivities.

If I recognize you first, I'll introduce myself and my lovely bride. With the long gray beard, I may stand out more. And if it's sunny, the reflection off my bald spot may blind you!

If you want to garb up..... please do. Who cares what the management prefers? They didn't ask us if we preferred to have season passes or not.
