I have seen the german gown on Sofi's Stitches site, and I am fairly sure it won't come big enough for me.  So I was wondering, has anyone seen a pattern similar to it?

I am also very interested in this gown... please share

Is this the gown you mean?

Sofi's sizes their gowns based on waist size, and it looks like it goes up to a 39" waist.  There's a now OOP pattern very similar to that from one of the Big 3, but again if sizing is an issue, that might not work, either (altho' you could always grade the pattern).  It will take me a while to dig it up, but I'll see if I can track it down for you.

ETA:  This ebay seller has the pattern I was talking about, but neglects to mention the company, and I can't link to the picture itself. Grrr.

FWIW, although Sofi's generally bases their gowns on recognizable historical sources, in this case I'm iffy on the attribution.  It doesn't look particularly German to me (altho' I am admittedly not an expert in German costuming)... what it looks like to me is a gown Tom Tierney illustrated in Spanish and Moorish Costume, as a maternity gown.  Tierney's sources are usually earlier costumers like Carl Kohler, although in this case I'm not familiar with the source.

This is not the particular dress style that I had in mind.  I have seen it on here before and will have to take time to track it down...likely in finished projects back in the fall if I remember.

In my case, the character I wish to create is a German woman, not peasant but not quite middle, who strolls the market selling pretzels from her basket.  My husband is a metal worker.  If anyone can help with images for this character it would be greatly appreciated.

I believe that the person who has the gown I am thinking of is sealion.  Still trying to find the picture i saw.

I suggest the site of wonderful costume maker Michaela de Bruce: http://frazzledfrau.glittersweet.com/

Also, the more Flemish gowns might be to your liking?

I think the style of the upper dress might be one of the inspirations to the "german" one above? Sleeves seems wrong for this style, though. A similar style also appears in Burgundian fashion, like here:

Thank you so much for that information operafan.  I now have a much clearer picture in my head of what my character could look like.  Now to get something ready for the start of the season.

Vielen danke

Okay so I am more the H/A person and for the 16th Century Sofi's gown just does not cut it.

So here is pattern that will help you!

So here are some Diaries on Flemish Gowns I think would flatter you and be in the correct era!

This is a really good site with loads of information!!!

Okay so if you are not into those outfits perhaps this would be a suggestion?

Reconstructing History has a Cranach Gown Pattern as well
https://www.reconstructinghistory.com/rh501-saxon-cranach-gown.php?s=&c=22&d=190&e=33&q=4&p=57&w=21

Or you could also try this one:
The Flanders Gown, because while you are German you would be living in an English Faire type place and so would adapt to what you saw around you

I think we have two different conversations going on in this thread.

1.) Jademozingo, the OP, specifically asked about the Sofi's dress (and has not returned to the thread yet.)

2.) Hausfrau Monica asked about more historically accurate German middle-class dress.

I have the German gown from Sofi's in white.  It is very flattering.  I hope you find a pattern to use.

Sorry I only can get online about once a week.  I have found patterns I can tweek (cut the hell out of)  to look like the body of the gown, the sleeves are the issue.  I especially like the sleeve style, so if I could find some sleeves similar, not absolutely the same.

As fo HA, I'm not so much going for as I can't find a stable contact in my area for the SCA.  I figure if no one else is going to be terribly bothered whether it is HA or not, why should I not just pick something pretty that I like?  My local Ren faire isn't very HA at all.  If I ever get into the SCA I'll worry about HA.

I am so sorry to hear you can't find a contact that is supportive in the SCA, I have heard this a lot in the past few years and it is
very aggravating to me!

If you still have issues please contact me and I can find someone for you to speak with okay?

I see my name here but I don't have any German garb so I'm not sure what you saw??? (Hmmm...Maybe you are thinking of my blue Forentine? There are photos on my blog at www.who-gives-a.blogspot.com ) I used to have some German dress diaries linked from my blog but most of those links were removed and I can't access them at the moment because they are saved on my laptop which is being worked on.

Still experimenting with the dress.  I have been informed that the local SCA (Lexington, ky)  is rather exclusive for lack of a better term. So getting responses is hard.  I have been speaking to a lady connected to the Louisville one and she's great.  Just it's a bit of a drive to go there.
