What is this thing that looks like a poncho?

Okay, is there anybody out there that can identify what the name is for the poncho looking thing that's black with white embroidery the bald guitarist is wearing in this video?

It looks like a Mexican poncho but the symbols are of a European style. This is a Finnish band if that makes any difference on region. IDK! Any help would be greatly appreciated, that thing looks fun and I'd wear one!

It looks like the style of wrap often called a "ruana" (which is a Spanish term, but often applied to Irish wraps, oddly enough).  Here's a good picture of the typical ruana shape, which is solid across the back, and split down the center:

You can also make one fairly simply from a couple of yards of fabric, or one of those tapestry throws.

Okay cool, that's a good start. Thanks! It looks fun and the style the guy has is really sharp looking. It looks like the kind of thing that would be fun to slap some patches of fur and chainmail on and give it a more feral look!

Very cool, thanks for the information. They don't look difficult to make, wonder if it might be more cost effective to find a pattern and some quality wool fabric. I have a friend who is an excellent seamstress and she could most likely do that. Heck she'd probably want to make two and have one for herself!

If she's a decent seamstress, she won't need a pattern.  A diagram will do, or even just the video clip...

..or perhaps the phrase...serape.  I believe that's a mexican or spanish term.  poncho works for me.

It's also a great easy quick make cheapo pseudo cloak for cold days. I sewed one out of wool (not as cheap), but ended up layering another layer of fleece ($6) that I didn't bother to sew underneath.

Glad you saw this! I was gonna reference the site if you didn't!! Still gotta make ours. Bought enough fleece to make 5 during day-after-Thanksgiving sale (only $1.66 yd)

If you want any help Goody, let me know, these are super easy.  I have one and just lay it on the fabric and cut around it, then fold and sew the edges, Voila!!  I prefer some curve in in the front so it's not quite so bulky, and adding in a hood is a breeze if you want it.
