Most churches down here in the South have a thing about Wizards... don't think I'll be getting an invite anytime soon...

You might check with one like the Unitarian Universalists.

Why, yes... we are very welcoming to wizards... and any other spiritual path, as long as the intent is to do no harm, and to help those in need.  We even have a CUUPs chapter, now, I believe.  We also have a covenant group that study and discuss all of the Earth based religions and spiritual philosophies.  I think you'd like it, Merlin... and I'd be willing to bet that even the politics would be right up your alley, as well!

You have an open invitation from me, personally... and I promise you that no one would try to convert you to anything at all... except maybe to buying sustainable shade grown Fair Trade coffee and cocoa products.  ;)

You are hereby formally invited to a church down here in the even-farther south! If you ever get to Orlando, feel free to come by Covenant Community Church. If you come in wizard garb, you will probably get the same kind of odd looks as I would if I dressed like a pirate and it wasn't dress like a pirate day, but all you'd have to do is tell them you're a friend of mine and they'd understand.  ;D

heh-heh! Thanks, Iain. I appreciate the offer, but I don't do churches anymore.

Every year our church does a Trunk or Treat in the parking lot. This year the family has decided to do an Alice in Wonderland theme. I'm the Mad Hatter, DH is going to be the Knave of Hearts, DS is going to be one of the card guards & DD is going to be Alice. I'm looking for a few pieces in thrift stores (we have most of it in garb) but I found an Alice costume at Party City on clearance. I brought it home & had DD try it on figuring if I couldn't find a thrift alternative she could wear the cheap costume.  She looks at it, sighs & says 'I just don't like store-bought costumes'. That's my girl!!!

Your mother in law buys you a toddler harness that looks like a little sheep for when your kiddo starts wanting to run around at faire, and the first thing in your head is  " I will need to make a little scottish tartan outfit for her to wear with this."  ;D
It is kind of strange watching your personal history become costume.

You read the above and think, "I hope she does, because I'm putting this on my list of things to be sure and see when we visit TRF this fall." Sounds too cute!

LadyStitch

She isn't due to born just before TRF, but she will be at TRF, but in a different outfit.  ;D She may be wearing it next year at TRF though.

Well, then I guess we'll have to make a second visit ...  ;D

You really can't take the heat, but if it's a choice of long hair or garb, you cut off all your hair so you can wear garb to faire.

I know you can put up long hair, but I still was way too hot at the 2 faires I went to in May and June, so I cut my hair really short (think Judy Dench or Ellen Degeneris), wore garb to Bristol this weekend, and still suffered from the heat.  But at least I can drive with my windows down without getting hair in my mouth and eyes!    ;D

Hair was never a problem for me...back when I had it. Long hair actually seemed to keep me cooler all those centuries ago, as does my beard nowadays.

If you go to a thrift store and your children immediately fan out grabbing all Nerf guns to Steampunk as well as any Pewter or wood mugs before you get a basket.  Happened Saturday.

Frequent - Scarborough, Four Winds, Sherwood, and Middlefaire as well.

...if when you go clothes shopping, you often look at articles of clothing while asking youself, "Could this be used as garb too?"

(I'm not sure if anyone has posted this already, but this happens to me often :) )
