Pewter Tankard Question

I am needing a pewter tankard. Just happens my husband has one with a glass bottom.
Will it be ok to use that untill I can get the one I want ?

That is fine.  I used one for the first couple of years until I got my wooden tankard.

I actually prefer pewter (statesmetal) it stays cold longer.

Some people prefer the glass bottom cups, not because of taste, or keeping cool, but for the fact that it lets you see whats in your cup better. With the rather unscrupulous reputation that some faires and parties involved with other historic groups, I know sometimes people would rather be able to see if there were traces of anything slipped into their drink. This may be pure paranoia, but I knew a number of people back in my SCA days who would insist that young ladies only drink from cups with clear bottoms, just to be safe. I doubt this is a real problem in most places, but it only takes once to make people nervous.

I'd say use what you have until you find one that is exactly what you want. No reason not to use a perfectly fine mug if you have it.

Glass-bottomed tankards are in the lore of the time and can be justified as "period" if not completely accurate. I believe it was more in the 17th and 18th centuries, but lore says that press gangs would drop a coin in a man's tankard and by drinking the drink, the man would be accepting payment for the drink and his services and therefore has agreed to join the crew. Glass-bottom tankards were used so a man could see if there was a coin in his cup before drinking it and avoid "agreeing" to be recruited. Its mainly a legend I believe, but its well-known enough to be used, should anyone comment.

But I agree....anything is better than cheap plastic!

As long as you're not going to be doing anything too crazy, glass bottoms are fine. However, if you're going to be rolling around on the ground or climbing trees or something like that, it's better to get an all metal or all wood one as they're less likely to break.

Actually if you plan on being a little rough with it, a wooden tankard will break.  So it would be better to stick with a metal one.

This is my boyfriend's mug, "Lumpy." At one point, Lumpy was a very nice mug. Lumpy has been so beaten up that Lumpy is no longer usable. Lumpy will cut you.

On the other hand, this is my mug



Wooden, but it's one solid piece of wood that's been carved into a mug. The sides are half an inch thick. It's not going to break any time soon!

I'm just saying that wood or metal are less likely to break than glass.

i have a bulky aluminum tankard i found at the goodwill when i worked there. it gets rather heavy to have on my belt all day, especially without a proper clasping on it to keep it from always swinging around, but as i do the full contact sword sports, i need something durable. i'd love to find a pewter one, just not with the glass bottom...

I like pewter because you can shape it to perfection ... pewter is very pliant ... dents/scratches easy too ... this is not a negative for it adds character to a Ren theme.

If you get to KC, and need a nobles goblet...get to Royal Eggs (I wish she had online presence) and get yourself one....NOTHING looks better in my opinion for nobility and royalty!
