Margo Anderson Tudor Lady's Hood Pattern size?

I'm starting to work on a French hood from Margo Anderson's Tudor Lady's pattern, and three sizes are given on the pattern pieces - small, medium, and large.  But I can't find any information in the manual on how to determine what size I should use.  Anyone have any idea how it works?

Cut a mock up base out of thin cardboard and see how it looks on your head. Start with the largest size and work your way down until it looks right.
Most people need a little tweaking on hats and such.
