We are brand new to dressing for the Faire and are headed to King Richard's tomorrow.  At the last faire we went to we purchased costumes, my daughter's includes skirt hitches because her dress is a little long but she is still growing.  I am having a hard time putting them back on without it looking very strange.  Does anyone have a good tutorial for using these and/or pictures of them attached correctly?
Thanks!

Skirt hikes generally hang from a belt, and have two D-rings (like on mundane belts).  Put the hikes where you want them (usually at the hip), and then reach down almost to the knee, and grasp a small handful of skirt. Draw this through BOTH D-rings, and then back down through the bottom one again, like this:

It can take some fussing and adjustment to get it to look right, but it's supposed to be a casual look.

An easier alternative, IMO, is to tuck the skirt into the belt or bodice--but they have to be fairly snug-fitting, which I'm guessing is not the case if your DD's garb is a little large for her. You could also "help" the skirt hikes with a well-placed safety pin or kilt pin.

Out of curiosity, how many hikes do you guys use?  I use three... two in the front and one in back.

Thank you very much.  That's what I thought I was supposed to be doing but it seems like we are pulling a lot of fabric through and it looks very "poofy."  We'll try to keep fussing with it in the morning.

And she uses 2 skirt hitches in the front, none in the back.

I do it another way, too - when I was making my dress, I sewed 6 pieces of ribbon into my waistband (so that they sandwich the fabric in three places) and then I tied knots at the end of the ribbon, so that the skirt stays caught up in them. I can find you a picture if you'd like.

I do like lady rebecca, but I usually cheat and use the actual drawstring for my skirts. once I've tied it to fit right i drop a tail end into the inside of the skirt and tie it to the end of one hanging on the outside. I've also seen someone with the straps with hooks hanging from their belt, she then hiked up her skirt and there was a strap on the inside and she hooked the ends together and it caught it up in a similar way but was easy to drop and draw up
Things are shaping up to be...
Pretty. Odd.
