What should we add to this?

Hello everyone,

We just received my son's Halloween/Ren. Faire costume yesterday. While it's definitely a costume and not real garb, I love the overall look of it. My only problem is that it needs more...things to complete the look. I'm planning on adding a black belt, with a brocade gold sash. I might be able to make a black baldric out of an old belt and a sword frog that's been sitting around, but I'm curious about what else people would add to this?

Here's a picture.

Any ideas, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I think the cuffs and the collar could use some trim, just to make them stand out a bit moreI see theres some on the cuffs, but maybe something black...a nice trim tho not like rick rack or anything cheapo looking that will just make it look costume-y-er...If the buttons are plain you could swap them out with some cooler buttons...and its not too much issue if you spend a bit much on the buttons cuz once he grows out of it you can take them off and add them to new garb :)
Things are shaping up to be...
Pretty. Odd.

Along with the cuff trim, how about some faux pocket trim and hem trim

He definitely needs a drawstring pouch for all his pirate treasure, and something to make it jingle when he shakes it!  Just make sure they're not the chocolate coin type, or they'll end up in a puddle in the bottom!  :o  :D

Maybe he could have a small stuffed parrot perched on his shoulder, or in the crown of his hat?  Oh, and what about an eye patch?  He could tuck it up under his hat when he was walking around, and pull it down and wear it if he was talking to someone.  ;)  Feathers for the hat come to mind, and maybe a few cool piraty pins for it, as well, or a shiny costume brooch or two to show how successful he is as a pirate...  Definitely needs some "gold" about his person to flash once in a while, because you can't be a pirate unless you can take the occasional prize, right?  ;)

He's adorable, btw...

Oh, I mean... Aaarrrg, fearsome blackgard if ever I did see one, matey!!!

Seconded!! A bandanna for his head, like Cap'n Jack wore. And an eye patch. Can't forget that! And what pirate is complete without his loudmouth parrot? Like this one!

Thanks for the all the great suggestions!!!

I will have to look into some trim for the coat, jabot, and cuffs. Thanks. While you can't see them very well in the picture, the buttons are actually quite nice.

I just saw this silly, but cool looking pirate chest purse that might work. http://www.amazon.com/Womens-Pirate-Accessory-Treasure-Handbag/dp/B001LIU5PU
What do you think?

I avoid chocolate coins for that very reason. Of course, I also have to keep him from eating them first.

I do have a bunch of plums that I'm not using. I'm sure I can fit a few onto the hat. I'll also have to look for some pins and other trinkets to spice it up.

I'll look for some gold items as well. I have a small gold pocket watch that I will attach somewhere. It can always pass as a compass.

I forgot to put it on him, but he does have a baby drabbit. You can see it here on Lady Emily's shoulder (this is actually his brother's, but it will work nicely, I think)

As for an eye patch, well, we haven't had any luck. He has a couple, but won't wear either of them for more than a few seconds before taking them off. I can't even keep one on his head, let alone get him to wear one for a few minutes over the eye, so, sadly, an eye patch is out.

Finally, while it's hard to see, the hat he's wearing already has a red bandanna attached to it.

Thanks again for all the great ideas! I have a lot of work ahead of me.

I love the pirate chest!
The chain might help him keep track of it.
Deadmentellnotales.com offers you the entire pirate's world stuff, unfortunately, it looks like they are reorganizing. I don't know if the email address on the site would actually get you anywhere.
I loved their Spanish coins which make nice pocket change for a pirate.  ;)
