And a lot of it is culture.  One time at a rugby tourny, I was drinking beer with a guy from Austrialia.  I told him how I liked Leopard (a New Zealand beer) and he likened it to horse pi**.  But he loved Bud.  Very strange....
Now I like Saint Arnold Lawnmower if I can't get Bass or Guiness.  My personal worst - Kirin.

All of the mass produced beers taste awful to me.
I hate beer, and as a general rule I drink wine, but I allowed myself to sample a dark ale in Inverness, Scotland called '80 schilling' (I think)  in the interest of drinking 'Scottish' things while in Scotland.   It had a rich and smoky (like a burnt barrel)  taste,  no carbonation, a nice coffee color and was served ice cold.  It was not the crap sold here in the US under the '80 schilling'  name.
In Germany (where I lived for 3 years in the service)  There is a special dark beer sold during the Christmas season that has a sweetish caramel flavor with a smoky aftertaste that reminds me of burning leaves in the fall.
Other than these two kinds, I will not touch beer.
What doesn't kill me-had better run.

Oooo. I generally go for something other than beer but the dark German beer Rowen MacD is talking about sounds worth trying! :)

I liked the comment.."Given the choice between Miller Lite and soda... I would choose soda... and I don't like soda"

My top 5 are Guiness stout, Ugly Pug, Shiner Black, Shiner Bock and Fat Tire.

Ugly Pug....just the name makes me want to drink it. Where can I get some? I'm never seen it before.

I'll go with Miller High Life being the worst beer.

Stoney is pretty bad, Duquesne beer I think has to be the worst I ever drink Rolling Rocks is a close second.

One of the best was Esquire beer a local Western PA beer.

Donna...it's a local brew out of Ft. Worth....Albertsons and most all liquor stores in the DFW area carry it.

On Saturdays...they due brewery tours for (I think) $10...includes a pint glass that you get to keep.... and they fill it up with 3 of their brews for tasting.

When we did it...they had a band and BBQ sandwiches....really a fun Saturday.
It's in the hospital district in Ft. Worth

I found the address for Rahr's brewery. The tour is from 1-3 on Saturdays. $7 for the tour and tastings. We're planning on going September 24 and sample me some Ugly Pug!
They say its $2.50 off the tour price if you bring back the glass.  ;)

From what I heard many years ago, that is what the "bock" beers are...that at the end of the year, they go through a process of cleaning the brew vessels and that the sediment left from the previous year's brewing somehow is used to make the final batch. I've seen some foreign labels bottle a bock for sale in this country, and they usually show up at the end of the year. Whether what I heard is actually true, I don't know...never bothered to research it.

I'm surprised didn't think many would remember Duquesne Beer or know of Esquire.  My dad drink Esquire and I always tried to have one in his memory when I visited PA.  Haven't found it the last few times I've been up have guest that it has been discontinued.

SirRichardBear, my dad drank Stoney's, my grandfather drank Esquire and I don't know anyone who drank Duquesnse.  Jones Brewery no longer makes Esquire.  But you can get a can here:

I don't remember the last time Esquire was sold, all I remember were the 7 oz pony bottles in Grandpap's fridge.

Worst I ever had was something called Great Plains (?) in Montana. Like drinking a glass of soggy wheat germ.

Am reminded of an old line from Zap Comix... "Bear Whizz Beer, It's in the Water".
