So, this isn't really about sewing directly, but I know you guys are prolly the only ones who care. I picked up a book for $2 (used from a fellow fashion major) called Fashion in Costume 1200-2000 by Joan Nunn. As I passed the dedication page I saw a familiar name. This is what I saw

"i would also like to pay tribute to the late Janet Arnold, whose outstanding research in the cut and construction of clothes from the past improved greatly the making of period costumes for stage, and particularly for film and television."

It gave me such warm fuzzies. So often books are dedicated solely to "nobodies" that it was nice to see someone I have respect for being shown a great respect by someone else in the same field.

Not that I expect this to be an overly popular thread, I just thought if anyone out there would care, they would be found here.

Also, while in the topic of Janet Arnold. I need more of her books, but am kinda broke. Does anyone know of anywhere to get them cheap?

Good to see a prior academic being credited.

You could try Amazon Marketplace sellers: you MIGHT pick up something pre-loved, but us wot have them tend to hang on to them, and the ones you do see tend to go for premium prices...

Margo Anderson's patterns are also dedicated to familiar costumers.

But as an author, I have to take objection to the word "nobodies." It's a pretty big deal (IMO) to dedicate a book to someone, and just because a *reader* doesn't know who that person is, s/he is clearly somebody VERY IMPORTANT to that author's life, and probably the development of the book, as well.

One would have to say that the late Janet Arnold WAS the authority when it came to the History, Cut, and Construction of Period Clothing. Her keen knack for research has yet to be beat.

Just going through Elizabeth's Wardrobe Unlocked is proof enough.

Gem, that is exactly why I put nobodies in quotes. I totally understand that to the author they aren't a nobody, quite the opposite usually. But I was generally referring to the dedications to close friends and family members that the reader is completely unaware of.

Speaking of which, my university library do loans from other countries if the book in question is not available in Norway. Well, this one book (of which Janet Arnold was co-author) was borrowed from Sweden:

I almost fainted when I opened it. And it was VERY hard to give it back...

I would have had a hard time giving it back also.  ;)

I can't even imagine the fees you'd have to deal with if you "lost" it...
