Sounds like someone has started reading "Dies the Fire" by S. M. Stirling  a series I encourge anyone who likes end of the world fantasy/science fiction to read its the best in a long long time.   One thing to remember is that its lack of water not food that would kill most people and I don't think TRF or Sherwood has a natural water source Scraborogh does most years with the little creek that runs behind it.   But being close to the DFW area would be a problem,  DFW area with its high population would make a large death zone.

I'm on the other side Merlin its always easy to say enough is enough but while you are still alive you still have choices and chances.

No, Sir... never have.  I like SciFi/fantasy but I'm talking about real life.  You're ex-military... you don't smell something coming?  I've had that creepy crawly feeling, like just before an ambush, for the last two years.  Our civilization is VERY fragile... kill the power for a month, stop food shipments, take away everyones tech and let's see how long it takes before people start looking at their neighbor like they are a T-bone with tennis shoes.  I pray daily that I'm wrong... if i never have to fire my weapons in anger and be forced to take another man's life, again, I'll count myself as lucky.  I'll be able to give my grandson my guns, 30-40 years from now, and have him treat them as family heirlooms.

Truth.   Three days no food, theft will be common.  10 days no food, things get ugly fast.

I know what you're both saying, Sir Richard and Angus, and I totally respect your wish to survive. It's just that from my perspective, I don't want to survive it. I guess I've just seen more than I wanted to see in my lifetime.

I understand you postion Merlin and respect it I'm just on the other end,  I like choice.  Even seen Me and the Colonel?  I'm like S.L. Jacobowsky always looking for at least two choices.

Sorry Laird Fraser I was posting that I thought LadyJessica had started the series since that is the plot of the series all energy above human/wind/water stops and one of the group of survivors with skills need to survive were renies another SCA members.

Ask me tomorrow sometimes I think we are on the cusp and getting ready for a new dark age others times I think we're just in a resting period and everything will be fine and better than fine.   I'm not sure just how much faith I have in humans any more.

Sorry...I apologize for leading this into something darker than intended.

I'd much rather humankind would get their act together than have to worry about Armageddon. :-\

Not a problem lad.  We go where things lead us.  After all most are like cattle you just have to point their head in the right direction. LMAO

You are correct!  I have the first book and I think the third, gonna have to fine the second book and start over again, but great series from what I can tell.

You got guns, bedding, seeds and soil...but the most important survival tool is missing. Who's bringing the loki fixin's?

Somebody mentioned potatoes - who's got the recipe for vodka handy?

Not sure if we have any hops in Texas, but muscadine(sic?) grapes should come back and we could do a ferment in the clean tub of a washing machine.  Grandpa did that once – result goes to vinegar before too long, but that would be fine, too, except what gets drunk up first.

I wouldn't see any as being defensible in any long run disaster. TRF has far to many holes to slip through. Sherwood has a better fence but the lack of a long term water supply would make it unfeasible for any but a short term. Scarborough is nothing BUT holes in it's defense.
My survival plan, hit as many stores for as many survival items (Jess had the list down pretty well there) as I can and head into the hills with my Lovely Lady. Two can hide very easily.
As for the Tsunami. There is patchy evidence in the panhandle of sand deposited when the big rock took out the Dinos. A wave that large would also be traveling at close to the speed of sound. You'd never know what hit you.
I am surrounded by 3 military bases. I would have to say that Military City would kinda be a target... so I have little chance in the event of a major power attack.

*I think my more likely plan would be to drink my entire rum supply so I wouldn't feel anything. .*

Yeah it is a straight shot down IH 35 from DFW to Austin To San Antonio.  So we really stand no chance. LOL  ;D

Who's bringing the toilet paper?  :D

I subscribe to a "prepper" group on facebook, and there are all sorts of skills and knowledge that will be important in this sort of scenario... and I've been gathering as many as I possibly can... and those I can't, or don't have time to learn, I'm gathering into a library, both hard copy and digital, since batteries will be around for a while.

Speaking of batteries... another important thing to stock.  Perhaps not for immediate survival, but for small, short term power sources and trade, because the power of a light in the darkness is mighty, and people will eventually be willing to trade for that small comfort.

LOL... i understand, my friend!  I get a bit wound up when talking about this subject... my wife thinks I'm a wee bit loose upstairs.  ;)   I get "The Look" whenever i come home with a new weapon or a bag of ammo.  My faith, in my fellow man, requires i keep most at swords length and a sharp eye to their hands...

Sad times in this country.  :(
