How defendable is your faire??

So, I had one of those "earth changing event" dreams, not end of world, just earth changing.  I think part of the dream may have stemmed from a book I'm reading right now (I'll add the title here later) in which an event happens and it knocks out everyone around the world and when they all come to nothing works...no power, guns, cars don't run, even fire doesn't burn as hot.  Good book, but I'm straying from the post that I was making...

If an earth changing event does happen what would you do?  Where would you go?  What would you save?  Would you "borrow" anything?

Some of the TX crew and I were chatting about this the other day in the Chat rooms.  For me...while TRF might have a better wall in some areas surrounding the actual faire grounds there are some rather big holes in it.  Plus it's still to close to the coast if there's a tsunami in my mind.  But Sherwood has a cedar plank high wal around it and it wouldn't be very hard to shore it up.  So our game plan is to pack all the clothes and food that we can into the car along with my cast iron and the camping stuff.  And in the hubby's truck load the cab with the bedding and go to the soil place by my house.  Why the soil place, you may be asking, but hear me out. Fraser & Nasty, will be hitting the Academy warehouse load a semi down with guns, ammo, hunting bows and arrows, and camping gear and what ever else they can fit.  Riot will be grabbing seeds...ahhhh....yes that's where the soil comes in.  In addition to the soil I'll be grabbing as may survival guides and local herb guides and history books as I can.  Then I'd head up to sherwood faire to start defending it.

Wait, isn't this a new series on National Geographic Channel?  ;)

It would be the mother of all tsunamis to be able to take out TRF, and if TRF was to be destroyed by a tsunami, the cataclysm that precipitated it would basically render retreat to Sherwood ineffective.  So, to make you feel better, you'd be okay to go to TRF.

If you were to ask which I would choose to defend, I would pick Sherwood. Sherwood would a little closer to a major population area from which to scavenge, and that area would stand little chance of being destroyed by a tsunami. Houston, on the other hand, might not have such good fortune, at least the southern and eastern sections.

Sherwood's surrounding areas would offer more cleared land for farming than would TRF. Scarborough may offer the best of all situations, including pretty good visibility in all directions.

Mega-tsunami... 600-1500' tall with a wave length of several miles.  Most of Houston would end up under water and/or washed back out to sea... along with 25 millon from the east coast.

LNG ship touched off in the middle of the Ship Channel... equal it to a 5-10 kiloton Tactical nuke... every major refinery GONE, with all the nasty chemicals housed there in scattered across 2/3 of Harris county.  There is one chem that is found in campho phenique, that a single drop can kill... they store it by the thousands of gallons in one refinery.

Dirty bomb... comet...zombies(which with Nanotech could be possible) living or dead... economic collapse... race war... any of these could lead to a TEOTWAWKI event.

TRF would be "fairely" safe... Sherwood much better.

Y'all need to smell what's on the wind...

Don't worry. 24 hours before the disaster, Katy would have evacuated.

Well, if it does go to Hell in a handbasket on 12/21... at least i would've had one last time at TRF...  ;)

In case of a cataclysmic event, whether man-made, or natural, I'd prefer to be taken out early.  While the Little Rock Air Force Base was a S.A.C. base, rumour had it that it was #2 on the list of targets by the Russians (if you buy into all that cold-war crap), with Omaha being #1.  I told Nim that if ever we were notified of an enemy launch, that I would immediately drive toward the base. This planet is mad enough as it is. I can't imagine how bad things would be in a post-apocalyptic setting, and I wouldn't want to be there.

Sounds like someone has started reading "Dies the Fire" by S. M. Stirling  a series I encourge anyone who likes end of the world fantasy/science fiction to read its the best in a long long time.   One thing to remember is that its lack of water not food that would kill most people and I don't think TRF or Sherwood has a natural water source Scraborogh does most years with the little creek that runs behind it.   But being close to the DFW area would be a problem,  DFW area with its high population would make a large death zone.

I'm on the other side Merlin its always easy to say enough is enough but while you are still alive you still have choices and chances.

Although I understand perfectly how you feel Merlin I want to stick around and see what comes next.  Just sayin'  But living where I do I suppose a nuke will get popped a mile high and take us out in the beginning.

I know what you're both saying, Sir Richard and Angus, and I totally respect your wish to survive. It's just that from my perspective, I don't want to survive it. I guess I've just seen more than I wanted to see in my lifetime.
