So, I'm having difficulty deciding my tab arrangement. What do you all think? Alternating colors, solid red or solid yellow?

And I'm also worried now, seeing it put together, that it looks very "McDonald's employee smock circa 1983." I *will* be putting an embroidered applique triangle piece on the upper middle bodice, so maybe that will tone it down some. Do you think the tabs make it look too much like a clown? Maybe I should just bind the bottom? Also I haven't ironed the tabs, so they look small and fluffy, but they won't be once done. Thanks all!

Oh, Wicked--lovely job!!  I think the whole Ronald McDonald thing won't be an issue when you're actually wearing it.  Right now, we can see quite a lot of the red lining and trim in this photo, which you won't, when it's on. And the applique will definitely help (unless, you know, it looks like French fries... *ducks*. LOL). If it still worries you, I'd add trim in a neutral color that would help tone down the primary red/yellow contrast. If it helps, my corded Italian ensemble is tomato red and yellow, and it didn't even occur to me until just now that that sort of is fast food colors! (This is not my dress, but it's a gorgeous ketchup red and mustard yellow Campi ensemble that might cheer you up! I think the very fact that it's a Renaissance gown draws your thoughts away from Happy Meals. ;D)

I'm afraid I'm no help with choosing colors for your tabs. I would be doing exactly the same thing you are! (At the moment I'm paralyzed by trying to figure out what color guards to go on a black skirt, and what fabric to put on the back of a pair of reversible sleeves! Ack!!) What colors are in the applique? What will the skirt look like?

LOL! No flying objects to worry about, I plan on making jokes about it myself (Wouldst thee like King Phillips fries with thy mutton?). My husband suggested a 3rd color too--now I guess I'll have to start listening to him ::) I'll never live it down. The applique has multiple colors but all in the same hues--green, yellow, red, turqoise. Thanks for the example, I love that gown!

I'm starting to lean toward the red side; I think the alternating colors will make it look a little "jester-ish." I have an existing skirt in khaki, gold, garnet, brown plaid with cream over skirt tied up to the waist, but it's *very* heavy decor fabric and intended for cool weather. I may have to whip up another skirt *gasp* horror! ;) Did you ever figure out what color you're doing the guards on your skirt?? Did you buy that bias tape?

You know, you could group the tabs, instead of making them go all the way around.  Also, maybe see what they look like spaced much further apart.  Good luck!

Food for thought--thanks! I decided to just bind the bottom with more garnet binding, then attach the gold tabs. In the home stretch now!
