So I modified a Bit of Garb for My Brother...

Hey everyone! So, my brother and I were looking for something for him to wear for faire tomorrow. He currently does not own anything for faire, so I came up with the idea of modifying one of my chemises into a shirt for him (I didn't wear this chemise anymore). I basically cut away to a certain length to give it a jagged appearance because he wanted it to look worn, and a bit on the piratey/rogue side. So I did that, and this is what I got as a result.





It is a start for his garbing process so far, and the reason I put a cape over it, is to hide the ribbon that is used to tighten/loosen the neckline. I guess what I want is some helpful tips and stuff to make it look a bit more on the pirate/rogue side, or is that a good start for now, until he gets his own garb?

Looks good to me.  My first shirt looked very similar, it had a drawstring neckline and cuffs.

Thanks, Sir Neil. He wore it to the faire yesterday, along with some pants that I also cut a bit to give it that jagged appearance, and some black boots. I think it is all going to part of his starter garb for now, until he can get some (he wants to be able to buy his own garb. He does not turn 16 until July.)

Anyway, if I'm reading what you wrote correctly, you have ribbon for the drawstring, and it's too girly for a guy to wear?  If so, I'd say the easiest way to fix that is to replace the ribbon with a shoe lace or some similar cording (JoAnn's or your local fabric/craft store should have it).

If that wasn't the concern, feel free to ignore me.

I think he looks great.  Maybe a sash around his waist to pull it all together, but not necessary.  I love it when boys dress up.  My 12 year old wants nothing to do with garb, although he does have a blast when he goes to faire. 

I think I read you were at CRF in another thread.  How was it?  I will be there the next two Sundays.  They really do a great job.  Can't wait to go.

I think it looks great, especially considering the quickness of putting it together.

I second the suggestion of a sash, something that goes to about his knees when he ties it up.
Maybe tea stain the shirt so its not so bright white. Or tea stain just the edges

CTRF was very fun! It was a bit on the cloudy side, but it started to clear up later on in the afternoon. It was also kind of windy. If I could, I would go this Saturday/Sunday again, but I do not have a car and my father probably would not want to make the drive up again. He's not as into renn faires as my brother and I are.

Elennare, you read correctly about the ribbon. Thank you for the suggestion of a show lace, or something similar. I will work on that when I get a change too, and I am sure he will be thrilled.

Lady Gregory, and Auryn, we were both thinking of some kind of sash to tie around his waist to complete the look more. The tea stain idea is a great idea.... what my brother and I also did, is wrap a small piece of a bit of fabric that was left over around his arm, and put some red food colouring on it (he wanted to look a bit wounded). We also put a bit of red food colouring on the garb, but I love the idea of tea staining. He didn't want the shirt to look so white and clean.
