I guess the title says it most. Laying out a pleating can be a challenge; space and easily moving the fabric across carpet as you pleat. Any ideas?

1. Use the hallway if it is wide enough.

2. Pleat it at home, and cheat by stitching the pleats in place. I did this with m'lord's great kilt - First I stitched down the edge of each pleat (from top to bottom - waist level down to bottom hem), which keeps the pleats nice and crisp.  Then I ran a line of stitching from side to side at the waist level. It takes A LOT of pins, but it is oh so easy to travel with, and faster to put on.

To put it on, he lays the kilt on the bed, with a belt underneath. Then he lays on top of the kilt, trying to get his waist near the waist line. He wraps the kilt around himself - like a huge fabric tortilla, fastening the belt to hold things in place. We then arrange anything out of place with him standing.

I have nothing helpful to add. I just want to watch. :) This could be amusing!

I was just getting a visual of you standing in your shirt and boots in the hallway at the hotel, leaning over to pleat your kilt.  :o  ROFL
Nothing clever to say here.  Not enough caffine yet.
