Men's Pirate Coat pattern anyone??
Butterick and McCalls are both out of print and the Simplicity seems to only have Womens.
It's hubby's next requested peice of garb.  :-\  I said I'd look into it and it's going to be called a "Captian's Coat" if it happens.

Proper 18th c Men's Coat.  It's expensive but well worth the money.

The Reconstructing History 1720's justaucorps pattern is really great.  It has the lovely skirt draping that so many of the big 3 patterns skimp on.  I'd suggest it in a lighter weight silk so the swirly part hangs and swirls on a pivot.

I made this for myself, building in a bodice layer and detachable sleeves (there's a love poem to my deceased captain in the lining of one cuff and a treasure map in the other.  I made it in a heavy fabric, and I regret that.

What about Simplicity 4923 http://simplicity.com/dv1_v4.cfm?design=4923

A slight warning on this one.  I'm about to finish a coat made from this pattern.  The only problem I had was that the sleeves are too short.  I've figured out a simple fix, though.  I'm going to add on about 2 1/2" of length by removing the sleeve cuff, adding on to the sleeve, and then putting the cuff back on.  The cuff is about 5" deep, so it will never be seen.

It does make a good looking coat.

It seems it would depend on whom the coat is being made for.  I made the same coat for hubby and one for myself, and the sleeves were almost too long for us.  :)

I made that pattern for Capt. R, who has longer than average arms. I usually have to lengthen all his shirt sleeves about an inch and a half. I did not have to lengthen the sleeves on this pattern and it fit him fine. He also has wider shoulders than most patterns, but I didn't have to change that either. I thought this pattern ran a little big, too. I did have to lengthen it in the waist.
Good way to hide the added seams, Tim!

Maybe I've got gorilla arms?

This is the first thing I've made from a pattern, so I could well have screwed something up... hopefully I'll have them fixed by this weekend- it's the last thing I have to do, and I'll be done!
