Sealion I am loving the start to your new dress.  I believe they mentioned this in the compleated gallery thread.  But there really is something to be said to a well done piece of lower or middle class garb.  Without all the bling and trim.  Then it comes down to a good plan, fabric choice and construction.

What Flidais said.... it all comes down to the elegance of simplicity -- the tailoring and design on a lower class gown are the bling. Just subtle bling... it doesn't scream for your attention, but it catches it nonetheless, and....it's just.....so RIGHT...

I saw the finished product on the other thread...and BRAVO! well done!!

Thanks! I still can't believe how easily and quickly it came together! I'm trying to fight the urge to start another one since I am supposed to be doing other things today. I'm afraid that might be a losing battle, though. LOL

;D  But still beautiful!  Well done, you. :) :)

Artemisia

What happens when I mix steampunk with the renaissance?

This...The da Vinci Aviator:

I started with a florentine gown bodice.
It will be made of beige linen with black trim and coin sequins.
Three pieces: white linen smock, pleated/hemp-boned underdress and pleated overdress.
Obviously it is a rough sketch. Not sure of the front lace trim nor the dark overskirt.
Must be done by this July. Wish me luck.

You haven't had enough coffee unless you can thread a sewing machine while it's running.

Ooooh! I can't wait to see what you come up with! I'm thinking of putting something steamy together for Labor Day but must finish the Pennsic sewing first!

Artemisia, I'm totally loving the steampunk renaissance!  I really am thinking of doing something like this in the future, maybe adding a fairy element to it too... love wings!

I'm working on another "Campi" dress in navy linen. I just knew the purple one went together too easily. this one is making up for it: First I sewed the shoulder strap seams backward so that the seam allowance would have been on the outside once the bodice was turned (thankfully I did notice it before I got that far) then when I sewed the three panels of the skirt together with french seams I twisted one of the panels and didn't realize it 'til I was gathering the skirt so I had to pick the seam out, untwist, and redo. I decided that was my sign to be done for the day. LOL
