Very nice and striking combo.  I would use the saffron as lining or in places that it is seen and a white or cream shirt.    Buttons is my vote.
I have decided to go with buttons. I think the grommets would make it  more lower class than buttons and I am trying for a more middle class look. I don't think I will do trim with this one.

Have you thought about clasps?  They're my go-to option when I don't want to fuss with buttonholes or lacing.

Gem, funny you should mention clasps. I was just looking at some on line yesterday and thought to myself, that clasps might be the way to go. I am really not up to doing all of those D**n loops for buttons.
Thanks for the thought.  ;)

There is also buttonloop trim. One seam down the inside front and the only hand sewing needed is for the buttons.
It comes in different sizes, colors and lengths.

Ooh i like those clasps, and only $1!? I may have to invest in some of these for my next gown! I like how they're not shiny brassy bling-bling gold, and that's hard to find sometimes.

PILLAGED VILLAGE is one of the BEST sites that I have found that I order what I need be it trims, clasps, buttons by the gross, Aglets by the gross, snoods by the dozen, parasols, etc. I have gotten great Customer Service from them.

Button loop trim?? Do post that site Dona!!  That just might come in handy for all the shirts and chemises I make !!!

I have just finished this dress for my Lucy like the gold one I did but of course with a zipper in the back and different fabric, yes I too am wearing red and black, she's joining me hence the colours to the last day of the Michigan Renaissance Festival. I have had fun making it and can't wait to get some more chinese fabric prints again. :)
The more you worry, the longer it will take.

Very nice and I happen to have that fabric also. I made a pillow cover with it.  ;)

The "Peacock gown" has been re-vamped and is starting to look like the dress I wanted!

Most noticeable change is that I removed the silver trim and added an ornamental black velvet one instead. Loving that change. I've also cut down the back, making it lower, plus made sleeves. I'll make another set of sleeves as well (paned) and shoulder rolls, and then the dress is finished! :D

It's blue, you say? Uh-huh... VERY blue. He-he.

ETA: it's supposed to be a Florentine dress from the 1560's. Main site here: http://aneafiles.webs.com/peacock.html

Wow.  That black trim is a knockout!  As is the rest of the gown, but wow that trim!

The black trim looks so much better against the blue.

Thank you for all the nice comments! :D

And cool that you liked that new, black trim. I really love it. It's from a Nordic hobby brand called Panduro (probably equals JoAnn's, Hobby Lobby or similar), and they carry it in multiple colours. It's a rather affordable trim, app. $5 for 3 meters (although I used double rows for everything but the sleeves):
