Can anyone tell me if embossed cotton velveteen can be machine washed without destroying the pattern? I was shopping for some new curtains/drapes for my living room and came across some lovely burgundy cotton velveteen panels with an embossed design marked waaaay down that would make a beautiful gown! I prefer my garb to be washable and would hate to throw this fabric in the washer and find that the pattern disappears.

It depends on how the embossing was actually done. It it was cut in by a machine it is probably not washable since that would effect the weave.

Test:
Cut a hand sized piece out and place it into a hoisery bag. Wash and dry.
Inspect afterwards for signs of damage.

Hmm...I guess I'll have to look more closely to see if the pattern appears to be cut or just stamped into the pile. The were originally $150 per pair and I would be able to get them for less than $30. I was thinking of actually using them as draperies until spring then turning them into garb. :giggle:

Well, what did the package say, as far as care instructions?

If you really love it, though, can you live without washing it?  I have *never once* washed my peacock blue velveteen gown, and it thrived through five fair seasons!  A steam bath in my dryer was all it took to get dust and wrinkles out of it.
