Almost hit one of these in my car once (well actually an A12, this is an SR71)...

Dreg, could you please explain to me what your car was doing at 80,000 feet doing Mach 3? What, did the pilot fail to signal his turn?

LOL!  Told you I drive fast!

O.K., I was on my way to an R/C club meeting at the local airbase.  It was snowing hard, almost a blizzard.  Well as I pulled into the lot I was unaware that they had moved the parked planes from the tarmac to the otherside of the buildings for winter storage (the base had an active air museum).  I saw headlights reflecting back at me, hit the brakes, and slide to within a foot or two of the front gear of an A12 Blackbird!  Thank God I had a small car!  I could just hear my insurance agent..."You hit an SR71?  Is that a Mazda?  It costs how much!?  ;D

OMG that is so funny.  Glad to hear you missed it though.  I'm sure your insurance agent would have inserted some colorful words in there as well.
May the stars always shine upon you and yours.

I thought you'd all like to know that the F-14 was just retired a couple years ago and ran one of it's last missions in Iraq. I read about it in an Air and Space Magazine. I asked a pilot at the last air show I attended why and he said "They require more maintenace due to the moveable wings, and the computer capabilities of newer fighters such as the F-16, F-18, and F-22 are just so much better and more adaptable than the F-14. " It's sort of sad because that fighter has the mystique attached to it, as a movie plane and one of the best fighters to go up against the USSR. But, it's run it's course. Sort of like the SR-71 too, they now just use it as research and development since ground reconnaisance and the Predator are better technology and cheaper. Another plane I thought was really cool was the F-111 AArdvark since it could carry a heavy payload, had moveable wings and was big yet could fly at Mach 2, and had a side by side cockpit like the A-6 or even a Cessna which is unheard of for fighter-bombers at this time. It was the faster version of the B-52, but carried a nearly equivalent amount of bombs. Enough with the random facts. More pics. Thanks for sharing by the way.

That's funny, I wounder if you had hit it, would your insurance cover the damages to the plane? I know the SP's would have just loved taking that traffic report.

Ooooo!  If we're talkin' favorite planes, then the A-10 "WartHog" gets my vote!!

Ugly as sin, flies like a bus and carries anough payload to start and end most conflicts!!

While stationed at Dover Air Force Base I had the opportunity to stick my thumb in a 30mm barrel of an A-10.  Seemed like the rifling was a 1/4 inch deep.

Seems to me the Warthog would be more fun to fly than an F16 (close to the ground, heart-pounding action).

Here's a classic B&W of my one true favorite...The only "wood burning airplane" ever made...The venerable F4 Phantom.

Sadly, a rare sight today... :(
