Had a wonderful time at the World Steam Expo and got lots of compliments on the garb! I put my feet up and fell asleep as soon as we got home so I don't have any photos to share yet.

Serena- We never made it over to Greenfield Village because we didn't want to miss anything going on at the con. Thought about going today but the weather turned nasty. Love your purple gown!

Thanks!

We mostly went over for lunch at the Eagle Tavern and so my daughter could go ride the carousel.  We went over on Saturday to pick up my daughters jacket from the lost and found and saw quite a few people.

Sounds like the con was fun - *jealous!*.

The little clay zeppelins were an abject failure.  The little tails & gondolas broke off if you looked at 'em cross eyed.  So I got a sheet of SP rubber stamps from Etsy, w/TWO airships, top hats, gears, transistor tubes, etc.  This'll make badge making fun!

Sign me up for Jealous, also...  :P  LOL

I know you'll figure it out, Taffy!  I have faith in you!  The stamps sound awfully cool!  Can't wait to see what you come up with!!!

Okay, slightly culture shock confused here.

Looking at the A-Kon Convention pictures and it seems like it was highly steam punk and very little anime..........so which is which?

Steampunk is a very popular subculture that's emerging right now and it seems to be big at many conventions, anime or no. Some, if not all, of the people who are into steampunk are nerds and geeks at heart, but who also enjoy anime. There are also some steampunk animes, so that's another thing that factors into it. They're both separate, yet they intermingle in varying degrees. It also happens that the city that A-Kon is held in is a place with a big steampunk community.

There is currently a thread on Brass Goggles about how we Freaks & Geeks in the US tend to intermingle while the various subcultures tend to be more insular in the UK.  ;D

I'll apply that with a grain of salt  ;D since it is a lot of my rennie friends who are leading me down that path........and it was my sci fi friends who led me to my first Renfest.

Further, as it is, more pictures are drifting out of A-Kon and there were anime folks there as well.

It may have been a prime op for me to start to drift into that world as well......but it would have been my 3rd straight weekend 6 hour round trip to the Dallas area and that would have been too much.

After fighting my way through the throngs and masses of anime cosplay to get to the art show - Akon is Anime.  There were just a good number of Steampunk people there.  I did not go back for Abney Park on Sat pm. Had hoped to, but spent time with daughter instead.  I was TOTALLY overwhelmed by the number of anime cosplayers there.  WAY too many for me, who although a "geek" in some sense of the word, is not one who enjoys anime at all.

As I understand its mainly an anime convention, but the two aren't mutually exclusive either.   A lot of anime have a steampunk "flavor" and there are few that are outright steampunk like "Steamboy".

Well, anime wise, gives me a year to research things...especially since mine comes from the 60's like Marineboy, Eightman, and Gigantor.

Steampunk, though.....when's the next gathering in Texas?

Deckard And Zhora

Not to change the topic off the whole anime thing....but I had to share!

I made my first-ever hat, and it happens to be a top hat for my steampunk outfit for All Hallows Eve weekend at TRF. The pattern was actually from a clown-type costume, but through modification and a little poster board, it has changed from a floppy, big hat into something with a little more shape. I will be putting finishing touches and decorating it to give it a little more oomph!

I've also been collecting little trinkets that I might post some pics on that are going to be part of my outfit.

I'm making my skirt today, and I'm SOOO having fun with Steampunk!  ;D

Taffy Saltwater

D & Z, ya gotta have a Nize Hat!  Last year I gave out little commemorative SP badges to the punkers who attended TRF on AHE.  I'm trying to do it again this year - lots of technical difficulties w/the first design.  Shall I put you down for a badge?

I need to go through the old posts & make a list -- sheesh!

Yes, both my husband and I (who has never worn garb before!!) are going SP on kind of a bet from some of our friends! I'll have to think of something I can make too! It'd be great to get a solid number so we have enough goodies for everyone. Another fun project...yay! :)

Okay!  I'm starting a little TRF AHE SP list.  Qualifications for the badge are easy - you're in SP on AHE at TRF - I'm usually there only one day per weekend - usually on Saturday. I'll be working on catching up w/names later & will repost this again before AHE, so please  let me know if you don't see your name here.

Cool hat!  Looks really good.   :)

I'm assuming you used the posterboard for support in the crown?  If it starts getting droopy as the posterboard wears out (or gets rained on), you can replace it with the plastic grid used for needlepoint, and not have to worry about it getting wet or anything.
