What I'm kind of interested in about this movement, is there also a music or literary bent to the followers?  Ie, do they follow a sort of musical style as well (ala new wave or psychedelia) or literature (beat poetry, sci-fi)?

Musically I would reccomend checking out Abney Park, Dr. Steel(more of a hip hop kind of sound but dang it he's fun), Vernian Process, in the case of Vernian Process he has a record label called Gilded Age Records that has a bunch of Steamy styled bands that would be worth looking into.

Video for Dr. Steel that just makes me laughhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1wZ5qGQ78io

As for literary the classics of Jules Verne and H. G. Wells are a good start, they are considered the forefathers to Steampunk. As for current authors...well you got me I have't had alot of time to look(still has copies of 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea and Mysterious Island to read for the first time in years)

Thanks Rani, it was getting late and I couldn't think of any others.

Interesting...I was starting to wonder if it was a fashion-style-statement-only thing or also had a more complete lifestyle built around it.  Usually strong fashion-styles are way deeper than just a look.

Not just a wacky way to dress, Nic.  Bonafide genre of it's own with history, major motion pictures, RPG systems, conventions and well recognized literature to support it.
I hope my life is an epic tale that ends well and everyone likes to read. --Grovdin Dokk

Thank you, Elo, Rani & Grov.  Let me also toss out early sci fi writers such as Jules Verne & H.G. Wells and specifically the tv series Wild Wild West as literary/entertainment forerunners of the current SP movement.  There was also a romantic Victoriana movement in the 80's and Billy Idol as one of the "new romantics".  There's a pretty broad base attracting people w/different interests.

LOL  I just happened to be in a Google kinda mood last night, and I'm also a Fan of a couple of SteamPunk pages on Facebook that have lots of cool S/P info.  I've seen a couple of those books in the library, but so far I haven't had a chance to read any of them.  Maybe I'll pick one up on my next visit!

Taffy, do you remember the clothing brand name Gunny Sax from the early 80's?  They were all about the Victorian silhouette, with the tailored fit, lacy trims and insets, button up collars and tea-dyed color pallet. I loved those dresses...  LOL

In a 2008 episode of Doctor Who called "The Next Doctor", there's a bit of a Steampunk theme when the CyberKing rises out of the Thames River in London.

Rani, I eloped in a Gunne Sax dress in 1978 - back in my thinner days.  I was trying to remember that brand name last night.  The tea-stained pallette and soft colors were so romantic.

I watched one of the oooold Dr. Who's back in the olden days.  As I recall it was on PBS & was the incarnation who wore the long striped scarf.
