sleeve lining

My next project will be a Spanish ropa (loose overcoat) w/huge sleeves, which I will make detachable.  The fabric is a solid gold damask w/two trims - one for the body, which is gold w/a little sage, and the second is for the sleeves, which is gold w/rose & sage.  The secondary colors are very subtle.

I would like to line the sleeves in a contrasting fabric, maybe a soft rose, but would like it to be as neutral as possible so I can wear the ropa w/different outfits.  Right now I'm planning to wear it over the black velvet under gown that Lady Kathleen made for me w/a blackwork  chemise, but I think the ropa itself will be very versatile.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to the lining color?

Try for a rose that matches the rose bits in the sleeve fabric. You'll probably just have to hold the fabrics
together to see if they clash or not. Something nuetral like a tan probably
wouldn't quite 'fit in'. IMHO.

The body will be solid gold (dancer); the trim has the secondary colors - sorry if I wasn't clear.

Dark green might look cool, if you wanted a big contrast.  It would pick up the sage in your trim as well.

A mustard color might be nice too, depending on the shade of the gold, if you wanted less contrast.

You did say you wanted a neutral color, though, so maybe a cream?

How do you feel about a nice soft grey taupe? You can find it in various shades, some with a rosy hue even. I have a taffetta in that sort of shade I'm saving to use with a yellow gold gown someday. It's pretty together.

Joanns has a silk tafetta with what looks to my monitor to be a nice color.

Why not a cream silk or a tone on tone cream damask? Something that might catch your interest but not be so bold as to contrast completely with the outside fabric.

That's the direction I was going in, as well.  It can be hard to coordinate with golds, depending on how deep/yellow/brown/green/etc the gold tone is.

Silk Baron has a *lot* of really lovely neutrals, and some *gorgeous* changing-color taffetas.

Thanks to all!  I'll be taking it & the trim to Jo Ann's & Hancocks to get a feel for coordinating fabrics.  I'm thinking a rosey taupe or sage or even a subtle floral w/those colors. 

Maybe a gown to match the lining w/a forepart of the gold damask?  "My mind is aglow with whirling, transient nodes of thought, careening through a cosmic vapor of invention."
