We used to have a dedicated chat nite, and now that each forum section can have it's own channel, what about re-starting a garb chat night?

NO!  I have a better idea!!!

I hereby call for the creation of the first support group/chat-meeting of SACS (inspired by Gem's post in the fabricaholics thread).

SACS shall stand for Stash Acquisition Compulsion Syndrome, and anyone who has felt compelled to hoard stash without a clear project in mind because it was on sale, pretty, free, or just too darned good to pass up is a likely victim of this dreaded syndrome.  Additional symptomatology may include but is not limited to:

1- An inability to complete one project before embarking on another;
2- Marked anxiety upon exposure to the thought of passing by a fabric store without stopping in "just to see what they have";
3- Feeling compelled to fondle and sigh longingly at fabric and other notions;
4- Experiencing a salivation response at the mention of the words "fabric district";
5- An inability to say NO to free fabric, notions, sewing machines or the many and sundry other tools of the trade, even if they're butt-ugly or broken;
6- Owning more material to make garb/clothing than that which presently is contained in actual finished garb AND/OR mundane clothing in one's closet;
7- Owning patterns in more than your own size and or patterns for styles you don't even like anymore;
8- Impaired judgement as evidenced by choosing to purchase fabric in lieu of paying bills, being late for work after lunch due to having gone to a fabric store "for a minute", chosing to shop rather than eat, etc.;
9- Marked distress upon others' suggestions to cull, or otherwise reduce the amount of stash followed by  a subjective sense of feeling deeply misunderstood;
10- and finally, a report by family members or other loved ones that the illness has reached such critical proportions that they feel an Intervention is in order.

I'll admit it...I have SACS.  And I know I'm not alone.

So how about if we pick a night, say once a month or something, to chat about what we're going to do or are doing with our stash, motivate each other to work on the projects we have, show works-in-progress, etc?  I'm serious, y'all.   I'm going to pledge not to buy any more fabric until I've made at least 50 more flower poufs (damned Ditchley dress) or finished any ONE of the many incomplete projects in my stash.

THERE.  I said it, and I need help to be held to it.

Who wants to join me?

So is 10 out of 10 bad or good???
I think I could manage 1 night a month, any more than that and it might cut into my fabric acquisition time...  ::)

While the chat idea is good, there are some issues to hammer out.   Not everyone has stash syndrom so naming it as such would be misleading and almost single out some potential posters.

Let me look into this furhter.  I will up date as soon as I have an answer.

Chat is a good bet.  And we can most definately set a night for it.  However, it would have to be serious garb chat if someone asked.

Lady Grape

I definitely do not have the problem and would love to be a part of a live chat.  It would be great to get live help if someone is stuck on something instead of having to wait for a post, but then again one night a month is having to wait too.  Oh well let me know the time, date and name of chat and I will be there.

Not buy anything until I finish something, but, . . but, . . . Jo-Ann's just sent me more coupons???? ;D
Be the change you want to see.

Mare, I know you and the other mods are highly invested in not alienating anyone.  That was and is not my intent.  Calling it SACS was my attempt at humor.  If the humor confused things, I'll repeat the intent without the SACS thing.  The whole point was to:

(from my post) "'...pick a night, say once a month or something, to chat about what we're going to do or are doing with our stash, motivate each other to work on the projects we have, show works-in-progress, etc?  I'm serious, y'all.   I'm going to pledge not to buy any more fabric until I've made at least 50 more flower poufs (damned Ditchley dress) or finished any ONE of the many incomplete projects in my stash."

Please note that I said nothing about excluding anyone.  As far as I'm concerned, if you presently own any fabric at all or are intending on purchasing fabric with the intent of making garb out of it, you have stash.  It may be small stash or even mental stash but it's stash.

And who doesn't need some motivation to get on with it sometimes?

FaireMare

I do agree that a designated chat night would be a good thing.

Historically, it puttered out after about year... well, loosing the chat room didnt help there for a while...

Let talk, you and me... sound good?

Now that the iron grip of control has been released from the sewing/garbing section we should be able to get a chat night up and running again.  I think it'd be motivational and helpful at those tough spots in your project.  Not to mention just good fun.  Hey, if you post in the garb/sewing section, you probably have at least a touch of SACS.   ;)
Nothing clever to say here.  Not enough caffine yet.

thank you for the SACS diagnosis , more than 70% of the symptoms apply.

Does the fact that I just ordered a mannequin online, and I plan on making a duct tape mannequin this weekend and therefore are holding off on 'finishing' 4 different projects until I have them count against me in the diagnosis??

I am in for the chat night and I think it would be great for everyone especially new people like myself.

 ::) I admit I have a mild case of SACS.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.  :P

I have another symptom to add to the SACS list:  A marked reluctance to actually make that first cut on the scrumptious piece of fabric that is earmarked for a specific project. ( because if I cut it , then I will be committed to making the project, and that fabric will no longer be a part of the STASH! :()

I was so good today! I went to Hancocks and Joanns in search of wool for a cape, and after I didn't find any, I left each store empty-handed! Which is a good thing, since I have a $700 credit card bill to pay off, and I would have to ship the fabric from CA to OKC, where the rest of my stash is.

Though I have to admit, my stash at this point, all neatly folded, only takes up one large plastic storage bin. Before I folded it neatly, it was taking over an entire side of my living room, three drawers in my bedroom, and the top shelf of my closet. It's amazing what organization can do!

But I want to chat about projects! That sounds fun. :)

I'd love to be part of chat night :)  I don't currently have any projects ongoing, but I have several in mind and as soon as I'm settled in my new apartment and can designate a permanent sewing area, I will definitely be starting on several projects :D  Just gotta find all the right fabrics, which is of course the hard part.  I think it's easier to find a good fabric and decide on something to sew with it, rather than needing specific fabric for a particular project.  Maybe that's just me. :)
