I've never met the man, but many years ago in Boulder I was sitting on the steps at the end of the Pearl Street Mall (pedestrian mall) having a rather bleh kind of day, when I suddenly looked up and right into the kindest eyes and most serene smile I've ever seen... surrounded by large men in black suits, Ray-Bans and ear pieces...

My first urge was to run up and tell him how... incredibly honored I was to be in his presence, but then I realized that what I would really be doing by that is asking him to acknowledge my presence... thereby validating my own existence, and interrupting what might well have been the only quiet moments in his otherwise incredibly busy day.  So instead, I stayed where I was, smiled back, and bowed my head as he passed.  He nodded to me in return, and passed on by.  

And that is how the Dalai Llama brought me one shining moment of enlightenment through self awareness, without even saying a word...   A truly great man, indeed.

(and perhaps I am still seeking that validation, but I get that same feeling now as I tell the story)
