Here is a valuable exercise- It's called "The Gas Truck Test":

Whenever confronted by a decision about how essential it is that you be at work, ask yourself the following: "If I were to slide under a gas truck and taste my own blood and vomit, would I need to make it to work?"  In most cases you will find that "work" would somehow continue in your absence.
