For great reviews on beauty products, try:

http://www.makeupalley.com

Not only are there reviews on commercial products, but also on home-made treatments, etc.  You'll need a free account.

ah, great call Taffy!  I hadn't even thought to include that.  Great site for ALL beauty products.

I used make-up forever this season. It's worked WONDERS. Stays on all day, doesn't get all yucky looking... I'm very pleased.
Oh... Shiny!

A tip I haven't seen on this thread is to POWDER your LASHES before you mascara. It's just like when you're making fried chicken: you flour it before you put it in the egg and breading, so it sticks! Seriously, I hardly ever wear mascara (actually I only wear make up when I go somewhere REALLY fancy) but take a powder puff and put it in loose powder real thick, close your eyes and press the puff pretty hard against your lashes. Sweep away the excess that gets on your cheeks, and then mascara: the topside of the upper lashes, then the bottom side, then the bottom lashes. Sticks until you take it off!

Apologies if this isn't new, but Calamine lotion is another good primer on par with Milk of Magnesia.  I don't know what the latter feels like, but calamine is soothing if you have any sort of itchy or painful blemishes.

I found out about it from Mario Badescu drying lotion that I wear under my makeup sometimes, which is mostly just the pink stuff, so I went ahead and tried it too.

Is THAT basically what the MB drying lotion is?  I haven't read the ingredients, but I use that along with several other items to complete the skin care regiment...  well dang, if THATS all it is, I'll save me a nice chunk of $$

I know right?  Ends up, as unusual a product as it is (don't shake it up?  Just use the pink part?  WTH?) it is actually pretty simple to make at home.  ;D

thats awsome!  Thanks for sharing that how-to page.  I'm going to try that when I run out of my Mario Badescu!  I am ALL FOR alternatives at a cheaper price!

Ironic that this got pumped cause I was just trying to figure out what to do as far as makeup and sunscreen. I was thinking about mixing it and some of my liquid foundation  then powdering over it? I have no idea. In the long run I'd rather go sans sunscreen and risk it ( I know bad, bad!).

For sunscreen I'll apply my moisturizer first, then sunscreen- let it set a bit then apply a primer then the foundation (when I need it- but I'm trying to find a tinted primer that is light enough for my skin) then powder.  I have yet to have a sunburned face at Fest (even when I haven't worn my hat.)  Now the rest of me, well, I can't say the same!

I don't wear make-up. I use a moisturizer, sunscreen, and a light dusting of cornstarch to keep oil/sweat at bay. I have sensitive skin so anything else breaks me out. I'd rather wear nothing than wear tons of concealer to hide breakouts. I've found that a genuine smile works better than any amount of make-up for making you look great!

While that may be true, women who play certain character types are usually required to wear some form of make-up by the costuming directors of their faires.  Or if not required, then strongly encouraged.  Noblewomen and gypsies most commonly fall into that category.  That's why these little tricks can be so helpful.  There's nothing less "queenly" than a queen who looks blotchy or has make-up melting down their cheeks. :)

You know what? You're right. I wasn't even thinking from a cast view. I don't bother with it because I'm allergic to the preservatives found in most cosmetics, so I forget that some people really do need to wear it.

Has anyone tried using stage make-up? I used Ben Nye when I was in theatre and that stuff did not budge.

I apply sunscreen after moisturizer and before makeup. The trick is to let it really dry before applying anything else. I would recommend mixing sunscreen and makeup b/c that's going to dilute it. Also, I'm a fan of face-specific sunscreen. DHC makes a great one that goes on as a liquid but the neutrogena one is good too. Both are lighter than the stuff you put on the rest of the body so much easier to apply and feel better on the skin.

And I am also a big fan of the mineral makeups. For the past year, I've been using a Smashbox one that I like b/c it's just one powder and a big brush. I used to use Bare Escentuals but didn't like the feeling that I needed 3 or 4 different powders/brushes.

For touch-up, I keep a compact of the Clinique mineral flat powder that comes with a little sponge inside. It's very discreet and is easy to apply quickly to even out skin tone.
