Hey all you seamsters and seamstresses!
I fell upon this doublet the other day while perusing the internet

I then realized how much I coveted and NEEDED to make this suit.
So I would like to make something like this for my fop character.  He (as some of you know) wears mainly purple and green.
The description of the doublet says it is made of a shot terra cota silk base and orange silk cut into bias strips
Im looking at silk taffetas for my fabric of choice
Im thinking I want purple as my base and then green as my strips.
Here is the problem...I need places I can find silk taffeta and a good shot mix color for the base (i really like the idea of a shot base)
So far my favorite shot purple I have found is this:

its violet shot with blue
now I just need to fin a good lime to mint green taffeta.
any ideas or guidance.
Also if I cut the taffeta on the bias will it stop it from fraying, or would I be smarter to try and find a silk ribbon that wont fray?

I dont know beans about taffeta. But a nice green with more blue base would look FAB with that silk!

I don't know about taffeta, but I've had great experience with Silk Baron.

How lime do you want it?

Or mint:

(He carries more than 40 shades of green.)

And I know you've already picked out your purple, but just in case:

I did find this shortly after i posted...

I hope you don't mind me tossing my two cents in...particularly since I don't 'know' your fop character well. But I have a general idea of foppery... so let me suggest this:

Pairing the purple with white would be much crisper, and use the lime as a secondary color - perhaps just underlying the panes in the sleeves and the slops. In your sample picture, where you see terra cotta, use white, and purple for the orange, but the slops beneath the panes would be the green.

I think the white behind the purple strips would make the purple stand out, and the green would be punches of 'wow' here and there. A gold gimp where the white trim on this would be lovely - it wouldn't get 'lost' in the purple/lime.

If you're going for a distintly Mardi Gras look, that's great, but if you didn't necessarily want to give that immediate impression, this colour scheme might be a way to avoid it.

In any case, I can't wait to see pictures of the finished product!

How about some shocking Blue??

Blue, with the Purple, with a touch of a Green, soft gold trims and piping will look less "Mardi Gras" and more Fop!! Shocking Pink feathers, Blues, Greens, and Lavenders to accent a Tall Hat.

Otherwise, this Fop ensemble is going to look awesome!

My friend Stimpzilla made that outfit.  She is a wonderful costumier.

I don't think that green and purple automatically conjures Mardi Gras for most people, and the lime green LP has selected is *much* different than the bright kelly green typically used in MG. This is a different craft altogether, but I just finished a book that was bound in lime green and violet, and it was just bright and fresh and delicious, and didn't make me think of Mardi Gras *once.*

I adore that color combination.
I don't know what it is but it totally popped out at me and made me smile. I love it I say go for it
I also don't think its mardi gras colors at all.

I've never associated green and purple with Mardi Gras. The colour combination in general really says "Joker" to me.

Then again, I've been playing Batman: Arkham Asylum all weekend, so that might have something to do with it...
