The Lady Mercedes

I am so gonna have to look for those on my next Disney trip!
Why be mundane when you can be a Rennie?!

LadyStitch

Oo a friend of ours is going to WDW in a few weeks.  We will have to bribe her to bring back us a set.  ;D
It is kind of strange watching your personal history become costume.

so i have this hat i have been itching to wear for a loooooong time and have never had the chance.  it's a very wide brimmed ascot style hat.....think eliza in my fair lady at the races.  would that mesh with this type of dress?  all i've seen leans more toward a goth kind of look.

Steampunk is what you make of it. It doesn't have to be gothy, true there are those who go the goth end of the spectrum but I've seen some lovely ladies wearing scarlet red brocades that look beautiful with Victorian styled clothes.

*draws a blank on the hat style* Would you have a picture of it by chance?

Would you consider this a Steampunk outfit?

It's the young lady who works for Sherrie, in the Wondrous Works in Wood booth at Sherwood Forest Faire.  I took this shot on 21-Mar-10.

Any particular reason why it couldn't become as elaborate as that?!?  If it's the same basic style, then it's got the same potential as any of those other hats that started out as blanks... A few plumes, a yard or so of some yummy satin, or maybe lace is more your style?  A gorgeous hatpin or two and you're all set!

This movie was actually set in the early 1900's, so it may be pushing the envelope for Steampunk just a bit, but I still adore the fashions, and all the hats during the racing scene are amazing!!!  Can't wait to see yours!

Yep Rani  :)

My hat is wide brimmed but not as wide as these examples.  It could use a few more plumes for sure.  I'm also trying to figure out what I would want to wear with it to make it go with the theme.

I went ahead and got the hat out and took a couple of pics.  Took the pics on my phone so a brief description:  The hat is gray with black lace and two very sparse looking plumes.  The hat is woven (from something er other) as well, not fabric.

I'll get my hubby to take a pic of me wearing it when he gets home.  That way you can see the proportions on a person and you know I'm not exactly tall lol, so it looks large on me!   ;D

This is the front of the hat:

Bonny Pearl, the hat is indeed Edwardian in feel and a little late for SP; however, hats are so timeless an accessory that it would meld well into a sp look.

dbaldock, that darling outfit is out & out sp - thanks for sharing.

As far as sp being gothy, it's true I personally wear a lot of black in my sp looks, but then I wear a lot of black in my daily life.  Some people do brown and there is a lovely movement towards adding a lot of color, which would have been available.

There were some lovely people in sp at Comicpalooza; Phil gave those people a nice ribbon.

Bonnie, I love your hat!!!  Wouldn't it be an absolutely gorgeous Jager hat, Taffy?!?  :D

I think it would look perfect with a traveling suit, maybe, in a dark gray, with lighter gray trim or piping.   You could add a few black and white plumes, and put one single shock of color in their midst so that it peeks out when you walk.  I'm envisioning a "seemingly" prim and proper librarian/records keeper/teacher who is hiding some sort of secret life (spy, perhaps?), and hats are her one extravagance, as well as her weakness...

Tee hee!  ;D

The wheels have been turning since yesterday!  I am already ordering some large ostrich plumes in black, silver gray and white.  I am searching for hat pins that I could also use.  I ordered a monocle necklace, since I don't see putting goggles on this hat because of the bow on it.

So to keep costs to a reasonable level.... I'm thinking I might try to incorporate my pirateyness into this garb.  So airship stuff?  I have a spyglass around here somewhere, etc.  I am on the same page with the black and gray for clothing.  I am getting another pirate coat that is the same cut as the one I usually wear but all black.  (This is a coat I'm getting Steampunk or not, lol!) I'm on the hunt for gray top (prolly silk) and leggings (velvety), jewelry, etc.  I will just have to wear my regular pirate boots for now unless I find boots I 'just have to have' lol.  I'm thinking of other things to add splashes of color here and there.

So I saw that y'all have been modifying Nerf guns.  What kind of paints are y'all using on them?  What are you using to sand them down with, a fine grit paper, etc?  Are you keeping the ammo and using lol?

I'm getting my hubby to make me an over shoulder holster and am looking for a wide belt.

Here is the coat.  Damsel in this Dress is my fave gal!

The tail coat just screams SP and the design is so feminine.  Can you make a pair of narrower sleeves?

For nerf guns I use paint designed for plastic and then paint over the base coat w/cheapo Michael acrylics.  I have a Dremel so that's what I use to sand off logos, etc.

Hhmmm.... well the sleeves are detachable.  So would that work?  I don't really want to modify this garment; want to make it multi-purpose if possible.

Will you be at Scarby?  We will be there Opening, Rendezvous and Closing weekends.  I can show you the coat that I already have that is this exact pattern.

Painting over plastic: model paints work well.  If you want to make sure it won't chip on you, be SURE to use a primer, and then put a clearcoat over it when you're done painting.  You should be able to find both of those with the model paints.  I can tell you from experience that if you don't prime first, the paint WILL start chipping w/use, clearcoated or not.

Sorry, hon, I've cancelled my Scarby plans for this year, money being tight and preferring to spend what I do have on another commissioned sketch (two, actually).  You could go sleeveless w/a white blouse & lace jabot w/a steamy brooch at the neckline.  Or v-necked blouse w/a ribbon choker embellished with buttons or gears (although I don't care for them) or an old timey pin.  Leggings and boots with a little topper would make a darling look.
