Hello All!

I just went to see the new Movie 'Sorcerer's Apprentice', I do suggest you see it I loved the movie!

But more so? I fell in love with the Sorceress Veronica's Gown.  I am not going to tell you a THING about this movie, but you have to see this awesome gown!

Another Look

Here is another close up of the gown and her 'assets' giggle!

What is great about this gown is that it is basically a Cotehardie, or a Gothic Fitted Gown because of the great shot of how her boobs stood out.
While I don't like the under gown, I could use silks in a dark gray or do a deep purple under gown, hmmm. I need to find lace and silver trim for the outer gown.

Squee I need fabric!

Looks very similar to Arwen's gowns in Lord of the Rings to me.   It also looks like it's a t-tunic cut on the bias which would explain some of the fitting.  (She's probably also wearing a bra.  Silly Hollywood can't get costuming right for the life of them anymore!)  It looks very similar to this fabric and I know I've seen both trims before as well...

Hollywood getting costumes wrong will change in about 4 or 5 years...I'll bet my life on it, cuz by then I will have graduated college and be out there doing it myself. Future costume designer ftw!

Pretty. Odd.

To Isabelladeangelo:
I don't think this is a  T-Tunic at all, and not on the bias, as the pattern of the fabric would be well sideways.  I think this what in the SCA we call a Cotehardie, or more like a Gothic Fitted Gown.  How funny you picked the same place I was looking at for the fabric! LOL Great Minds think alike!!
I was looking at the Lavender/Purple one, because I thought it gave a good look!  However it was not exact so  as I am heading down to Costume College and will be down at the Fabric District, so I will be on the look out for this, the neckline trim I have already and I know I have seen the sleeve trim on eBay, I will keep an eye out for that as well Micheal Levine's probably will have something awesome, though I hate paying his prices! I have my pattern for the GFG, which means I can use this in the SCA as well as for Conventions- double duty!!  I think the undergown is stretch/lycra velveteen, I don't like the strange colors but I guess it gave her a proper "Sorceress" feel? I think I will use a nice dark grey or deep purple.  These are my colors the silvers and purples so I feel I have to do this gown and I can wear it at Pennsic next year!

Well I wish you very good luck, but I want you to know? The Costume Designers are not doing this because they don't know accuracy, they are making their own stamp, and this is after speaking with costumers from several large Movies.  An example is Isis who did the Narnia movies, she specifically said she gave those of us who love H/A a bone, by showing she can make H/A, but that is not always what the director or the feel of the movie needs.

I used Elizabeth I Movie as an example,  Her Henricians filmy gauzy when it should have been heavy, to show the "Lady Elizabeth" was a free spirit, and then as the movie progressed she became more and more restricted, so the clothing did as well.  Then there are the out right dreck like the recent Robin Hood TV Show, where the Designer said that modern Teens could not identify with men in tights so she made "Punk Hood".  ::)

Like or not the director and producers pay your salary so you have to do what your told as a designer.  I had a whole bunch of really cute barbarian girls outfits ready to go into production when the director decided she didn't want "sexy" barbarian females, even though that is what the script called for.  I even got ding'd in a review about it, but it is what the powers that we wanted so I did what I was told.

Back to the topic at hand,  really pretty dress.  I can't wait to see how you make it.
It is kind of strange watching your personal history become costume.

I'm just saying this cuz I've seen several movies that are meant to be historically accurate and aren't...Ive spent a decent amount of time in hollywood getting to know people already. i was just making a comment in response to isabelladangelo's comment about hollywood not getting it right. I'm very well aware of costume designers putting their own stamp on everything. I'm also well aware of director and producers getting what they want no matter how bad it is...

I know many directors don't want their historical themed movies with a to be "museum pieces". But at the same time, designers like Colleen Atwood (Sweeney Todd, Chicago, Memoirs of a Geisha, Sleepy Hollow etc) and Eiko Ishioka (Bram Stoker's Dracula, The Cell) has proved that movie costume design can look convincingly historical without loosing the creative nerve and symbolism.

In general I dislike most Medieval attempts in movies, maybe with an exception of "Lord of the Rings". It's always quasi-historical, with a dash of Renaissance and later periods, as well as too modern. To me the dress above is slightly guilty of this as well.... I actually think it would be cooler if it didn't have this modern "look at my bra" silhouette and narrow hips.

I haven't seen the movie (yet), but is it even supposed to be historical? I got the idea from the previews that "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" took place right now. I would have thought that this dress was simply fantasy.

LordPaulet

Veronica was one of Merlin's apprentices and has been umm stuck in something for a very long time....(bringing us to present day) Hope that helps without giving away too much lol SO yes she is meant to be historical....but WAY OLD historical...

I want everyone to see the movie because it is a very entertaining romp. I give it 4 smiley faces!  ;D ;D ;D ;D
It is pure fantasy, it does speak about Merlin, however this is a fantasy movie.

But it is not supposed to be H/A I don't think, that part is about me, if I can get something that I can wear to the SCA, and I will always go for the more H/A if I can, then to a Robin Hood Faire and to a couple of Conventions in my area, plus Pennsic? Well then it is worth spending $ for the fabrics.

With that said:

Is included in her lecture series, and in the books Medieval Clothing and Textiles.

I am not going to say this is a quick thing, in fact it takes time I used linen as stated and it took 6 hours total, we moved about a lot but I came out with a great pattern.  It is very 'uplifting' indeed and I can't wait to put it to good use!!

So now to the fun of finding the perfect fabric!!!  ;D
