Most of my ren fests trips consist of a few hours up before departure time, searching for garb and equipment. I might be lucky to have the camera cards cleared a day or two ahead of time.

But should it be like that? I mean, two years ago for complex scuba ops, I tried to approach them like space walks, doing rehearsals in the drink before the actual task.

How much does it take with a busy life and a small apartment to have everything ready to go for the giant leap back to the past?

I think most of us start planning & packing a week a head of time (or more).  Make a list of everything you need, start getting it together and packing.  The night before you leave get it in the vehicle so you still have time in the morning for the last minute forgotten items (which there always are!).
Got faerie dust?

There was some discussion of this in another thread. Twas the night before fair

I think it depends on exactly what you mean by planning ahead. I plan and engineer new garb about 1 year before it makes its Faire debut.
I buy our season passes about 6 months in advance.
We actually pack the car, except for cooler, the night before.

A week???  For AHE, the only weekend I camp, I'm pretty much packed and ready to go, except for the coolers, the Sunday after opening.  *Runs downstairs to start going through the camping stuff...mumbles to herself "Still gotta waterproof the tent, re-season the Dutch Oven, hmmmmmm....should I bring all 4 sleeping bags or just the 2...*

I haven camped at faire (yet) but when i do my regular camping i pretty much keep everything in a like giant plastic bin so it can pretty much just be thrown in the car to go. After the trip we add/fix whatever needs to be so its good to go next go round. Of course this wouldnt work too well with food and probably your garb...

Normally, we'd have already had the loft set up for the run of faire, and prior to its construction, we would've had our camp set up by the last weekend of Sept. with everything washed, folded and hung up, and ready to go. This year is going to be bloody weird, only coming out one weekend. So, we're whipping out and prepping one set of garb for the weekend, washing everything else to get the storage must off of it, then putting it back into storage till I get back for Sherwood or Scarby :D

We use the plastic bin method as well.  Each one labeled as to the general nature of its contents.  In fact, the wife is rummaging through them as I type this to see what we need to restock.  Tomorrow will be our trip to Sams club, Tuesday will be packing, Wednesday will be loading and Thursday I head to the camp site.  And somewhere in there I finish building all the toys for opening weekend. This is what I would "like".....a lifestyle like with cargo modules (and a garage or huge dedicated store room for them) so they could just be loaded in, loaded out of the Forester.

Actually, a garage or large dedicated storage would be very nice. Since it is my apartment, however, it has to be pulled out of nook and crannies.

I think one of the catches with me, though, is that it is not just faire in the trip, but other places that I might hit on the swing around. Like laundry, decorations, computer and books if I stop by Mom's. These days, the computer goes with me regardless because it's a backup storage to the camera.
