I just finished Murder of a Medici Princess by Caroline P. Murphy (Author)
Wow. I could hardly put it down. It was fascinating and informative.
I also explains why Spain obviously did not trust the Medicis after Cosimos death and why Eleonora's brothers were recognized in her Spanish title rather than one of her children.

I just downloaded Memoirs of Alexander Gardner, Soldier and Traveler
http://www.archive.org/details/soldiertraveller00gardiala

Gardner was born in Wisconsin in 1785 and became a adventurer and mercenary in Afghanistan serving various rulers and for several years was the Commandant of Artillery for a Maharaja. I first ran across a fiction description of him in the novel Flashman and the Mountain of Light

The Automatic Detective by A. Lee Martinez, about a robot detective.  It's got a nice scifi/noir feel to it, has some nice snappy dialogue, and an interesting story line.  From the same writer who brought us Gil's All Fright Diner.
